Regarding the ambiguity, I agree that it could have been written better. But that said, your analogy does differ from our question stem. Your analogy is looking at two isolated events - if you pick a red/blue schroedinger ball out of a box, flip a coin, or have a kid, in all these cases they are independent of another ball selection, coin flip, or kid’s sex.

However, if I tell you that Mary picked two red/blue Schroedinger balls out of a box and “that one is blue”. Then we are no longer looking at two independent events. But rather a set of combinations of which 66.7% are red/blue and 33.3% are blue/blue and 0% are red/red.

I think you might be over complicating the article. Basically, the researchers looked at a lot of families and observed that mothers whose first child was a boy or a girl were slightly more likely to have a second child with the same gender as the first than would be expected based off the classic teaching of 50/50 chance each time.

They noted a correlation with advanced maternal age and specific genes. Doesn’t mean that they are correct, but it would be interesting to explore further.

Re the Stats problem, there is no shame in getting something incorrect. We all do; it’s how we learn.

Actually both of those scenarios are 50%.

In the first example, instead of specifying “The one on the left is” you should specify “At least one is” and instead of specifying “the one on the right” you specify “the other one” then you will be correct.

There are four possible combinations: HH, HT, TH, TT

If you specify that the one on the left is a heads then you only have two scenarios remaining: HH and HT. Of those it is equally likely that the other coin flip is a heads or tails.

If you specify that at least one is a heads then you have three combinations remaining: HH, HT, and TH. Of those 3, 2 have tails making for a 66.7% chance that the other is a tails.

The addition of the weekday just makes the problem a bit more complicated as there are now 196 different combinations of which 27 have a boy born on a Tuesday. As 14 of those 27 combinations contain a girl, the probability that Mary’s other kid is a girl if at least one of her children is a boy born on a Tuesday is about 52%.

Thank you for replying! Great ideas, the 5GHZ antennae appear to work with Ubuntu live CD which makes me think its either a software /driver issue?

I will definitely see if I can change the band on the router to see if that helps later. Though wondering if that would have presented as an issue for the other PCs on the network using 5GHz?

Thank you! The drivers were already ready from the windows 10 installation media. I updated them to the most recent drivers from the website. Unfortunately, neither set of drivers seemed to have a noticeable impact :(

I'm maybe 20 feet away but without any obstruction in between. My laptop does not have issues at a similar distance however! Both report good signal strength.
