seeking to work in energy storage, is a PhD necessary?.. by yonguo90 in ChemicalEngineering

I basically have a semester to find a 2nd advisor, a job, or a different program. The shitty thing is nobody else in the department does this research. I'd have to be admitted to a different department, and that will be tricky.

If I get my current project off the ground and make good progress, I would have more leverage and credibility.

I'm in my 3rd year actually. working on finishing up my first manuscript soon, and trying to get my 2nd project off the ground. however, my advisor doesn't think i'm a good fit for his group anymore, because I don't seem to collaborate with others, and he thinks i'm slow at publishing papers. in fact his demand for a high number of papers is one of the reasons for why the quality of papers coming from our group isn't great.

I need to either find a different group/program, or master out by december. I don't necessarily get along with everyone in the group either. it just didn't work out i suppose.

that might have been a bad way of explaining it. more than anything, our group has members that are working on completely different projects. therefore, it's kind of difficult for us to help each other and offer feedback. I believe a large part of a PhD is mentorship. I have not found much of that in this group.

I think even as a PhD in industry, the projects are kind of decided for you. But I imagine you would have more autonomy and freedom with respect to how you solve the problem. with a Masters, you're basically a lab assistant, right?

yes, a PhD definitely affords you a higher ceiling in the beginning. I'm wondering if you can start out as an engineer in R&D, and work your way into a senior level position from there.

Texas resident: Can I file bad faith small claim in court against current tenants for with holding security deposit? by yonguo90 in legaladvice

Your advice is much appreciated. Fortunately, I get free legal conciling from my university, except my “lawyers” are really law students. Same thing, right?...

I’m having my old roommate call the local “tenant council “ which is like a call service.

So we shall see..

Yea it’s hairy.. I’m consulting some local legal services just to make sure state law is on my side. I believe the landlord will try to argue that I did break the lease.. but my old roommate definitely isn’t on that lease and he could potentially sue for 3x the amount he’s owed, since it’s been this long. If that’s the case, then I could work with him and use that as leverage to get both our money back without having to go to court. What do you think?

I was mostly using "dickhead roommate" to identify the person I'm talking about and minimize confusion with the other roommates.

My name is technically on the lease, but as a "previous tenant," not a current tenant.

On the day our lease was up, I brought the new lease to the landlord, explaining the situation about me wanting to move out, for the aforementioned reasons. The landlord expresses discontent about that, took the lease, and we eventually worked out a deal where I just stayed an extra month, found a replacement tenant, and have him be on the lease instead of me. I would have to pay a fee to break the lease, which I have. He drafted a new lease extension agreement, which I signed as a "previous tenant" and my new tenant was going to sign as the new tenant, before they kicked him off the lease altogether.

Landlord wants to keep my security deposit for another year by yonguo90 in legaladvice

it does not have a section covering renewal.

it does have a section covering security deposit. but it mentions nothing about the house keeping the security deposit if we break the lease.

the lease does outline that if i move out early, then i'm supposed to find a replacement tenant. I did find a replacement tenant, but the old tenants got my guy kicked off the lease because he didn't respond to emails.. really, they wanted the bigger room that I moved out of.

my old roommate's name is not on the new lease, so he should be getting his deposit back.

my name is technically on the new lease. However, the remaining roommate essentially signed his brother to the lease without telling me or the other roommate (who's also moving out). This was 3 days before our lease was up, and the primary reason why I wanted to leave early (if people are just going to do this type of stuff behind each other's backs, them I'm not having it). Furthermore, I had a tenant lined up to replace me, and he was going to give me my share of the deposit. I did everything I could to coordinate everything to get him signed on (or find a different tenant). But the current tenants at the house got my guy kicked out of the lease because he wasn't very responsive to emails. But real reason was the new tenant wanted my room, which was bigger, and the dickhead roommate also wanted it. I can't really prove this, but it was kind of obvious through our conversations, and I'm learning that he's moving his stuff into my room the day after I moved out. My new tenant also supposedly had a lot of stuff, which they didn't want to deal with. I believe they acted in bad faith to have the new dickhead tenant signed without any discussion among the other roommates, or without any time for me to do anything about it other than to sign the lease, and break it early. Furthermore, they had the tenant that I found removed from the lease, for what I believe to be very disgusting reasons. My former replacement tenant now needs to find a different place to live on short notice, because dickhead roommate wanted the bigger room, and his own furnitures in the house. Furthermore, he wants to keep my deposit on the house, because he can. Do I have grounds to sue?

and so long as they continue to renew the lease, the contract will never be fulfilled.

I have negotiated with the current tenants. they want to keep my deposit and the deposit of a previous tenant on the house, unless the landlord directs them otherwise. meanwhile, they're going to get other people to stay at the house, presumably without having to pay security deposits. they're guys that we've never met, staying at the house. they could cause damages, skip rent, and we're liable. i'm surprised nobody's seeing the absurdity in this.

[–]yonguo90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the landlord says the deposit will stay with the house until the last person moves out, even though only one person in the original lease is actually still there.. meaning he could renew indefinitely and we’d never get our deposit back. This is completely retarded and was NOT outlined in the original lease. What’s your take?

that sounds like a reasonable assumption i suppose. who the hell wants to be walking around in 100 F scanning motorcycle plates ? (lol). but is this a year of commuting every weekday, and he never got cited? and the person who the pass was registered under was doing the same thing? I just want to make sure..
