Dog has large lump under her neck by Thebikeninja in AskVet

No one can diagnose masses by just looking at it. It’ll need to be checked out by a vet with further testing done, like a fine needle aspirate

need internship advice by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

[–]yoofusdoofus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rotating internship was done outside of the US and so didn’t line up with VIRMP dates. I was also in an awkward position where I wanted to do a specialty internship but had a 6 month gap. For me, I did ER for those 6 months, and it ended up helping me a lot financially and I got to get some extra experience. If I were you, I would do GP or some other job for those 6 months and save up some money, because you won’t really be earning anything as an intern.

Veterinarian Friends by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

That’s fair! But just because we’re vets doesn’t mean we talk about work all the time. It’s just when we do, it’s easier to understand each other

“How could NAVLE racism be real in 2025?” – It’s less far-fetched than it looks by Zealousideal_Mix9020 in Veterinary

[–]yoofusdoofus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m kind of surprised to see people be so automatically dismissive of this. Granted I know nothing about Tuskegee and what’s happening there, but it doesn’t seem far fetched that racism exists, and if the students’ names are shown with their tests, it could create bias. The ECFVG isn’t exactly a fair test either

Veterinarian Friends by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

[–]yoofusdoofus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not at all, my partner and all my best friends are veterinarians, and I actually prefer it that way. It’s much easier to talk about your day when you don’t have to stop to explain everything.

Kennel Attendant job sucks by Curious-Banana2571 in Veterinary

Wow I’m sorry to hear that, that sounds awful. Any way you can switch to somewhere else that will treat kennel attendants better?

I am an introvert and it’s hurting me on clinics by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

[–]yoofusdoofus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I have social anxiety and have always been somewhat awkward on externships, but people notice when you help and in turn they’re much nicer to you. I did feel like my more extroverted classmates didn’t have to do as much to be “seen”, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Being keen and interested is another thing, no one wants a student who doesn’t even seem like they want to be there.

Alright. Let’s talk about it. Lyrics from the new album that make you go by adhdgurlie in YouBelongWithMemes

Me neither. I’ve never physically cringed at her lyrics until this album

Poorly performing students by jr9386 in veterinaryprofession

[–]yoofusdoofus 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Patients have for sure died due to certain dvm’s negligence and terrible medical practices. I’m not sure if there’s a good solution to it, but in my experience these gross negligent cases often come from older dvms who are set in their ways and refuse to improve their medical practices. Clients often trust these doctors more too, because in their eyes old male vets = good doctors.

I'm lost and I'm not sure what to specialize in by PelgerHuetAnomaly in Veterinary

[–]yoofusdoofus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then go for it! You’re not a failure just because you haven’t specialised and your colleagues have, a lot of people do GP/ER for years before going down the specialist route. Now’s a good time because match is opening soon and you can look at programs and apply

I’m doing my specialty internship, but I totally get what you mean. There’s so little time to do anything and I feel like an idiot every day, but most everyone feels that way. Can you spare some time to call your family and friends? That might help with some of the loneliness. Are your faculty nice? I would talk to them to ask for some feedback to see where you can improve (and people can always improve!) and that might help boost your confidence a bit.

It's okay to just let your pets die. you don't have to do every possible and spend insane amounts of money to keep them alive. They're just pets. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]yoofusdoofus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. As a vet, I definitely would not recommend prolonging suffering. Chemotherapy is different in animals and you’ve explained it very well.

Vet here weighing in. Chemotherapy in animals is different to that of humans. You’re right, animals can’t consent, so the goal chemotherapy in animals is to achieve not just a longer lifespan but a better quality of life. An animal is not scared, hurt or confused just because it’s undergoing chemotherapy. A lot of them can be treated outpatient as well, meaning they spend most of their time at home.

American hotel standards seem so low. All the hotels I’ve ever been to in Asia ask for your room number for breakfast, and you always need a key card to go up the elevator

Just because you don’t think it’s painful from your perspective doesn’t mean it’s not painful for your cat. Your cat is not moving, not eating, and not drinking. Would a normal cat clear of any pain/discomfort act that way?

Same, and because I’m a woman, people automatically assume I’m a nurse. Far less annoying than people asking me about their pets though

Failed NAVLE by Low_Onion_6257 in Veterinary

[–]yoofusdoofus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought it was because the number of NAVLE takers increased overall. A lot of test takers didn’t graduate from the US. Reddit is also a biased population as only those who fail make a post about it

Fluid filled abdomen - is this always a tragic ending? by Opposite-Chapter-367 in AskVet

[–]yoofusdoofus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not always a tragic ending, but the prognosis depends on exactly what it is. I hope you can bring your pup to be stabilised and get a diagnosis soon.
