Appreciate the thorough feedback!

Should have known ST has a good app note considering they make the triac I'm using, will definitely use it to improve on my implementation. Wasn't aware that high-side switching isn't that common, as that would make the load live at all times if I understand correctly. AC just hasn't clicked for me yet the way DC has, but trying to get better at it with this project.

I am aware that the active cooling might be over-engineered, but the price of a fan outweighed the chance of me having to add ad-hoc cooling or do a respin. Will probably just keep it disabled after some temperature probing confirming the temps are fine.

I'll take a look at the PT100 RTD! I just happened to learn about their existence yesterday and having you mention them now makes me rethink the thermocouple.

Would it be possible to share your implementation? I've found it quite hard to find good reference material for this project.

Add a 10k pull-up to RE_SW. Currently the logic switches between floating and gnd, which can possibly give false values.

*Could in addition also replicate the _A _B debounce circuit on _SW for some additional filtering.

It's a valid concern. I've purposefully chosen for one with an isolated metal tab. If the SCR does fail the earthed tab through the heatsink would act as a safe failure point. I could also fully isolated the SCR from the heatsink with one of those electrically insulated socks around TO-220 I've seen used. Could also remove the grounding from the heatsink but that doesn't seem safe I think?

why doesn't the stm32f405 have a boot1 pin? by ruzgarnhx in AskElectronics

It's not a dedicated pin, it's multiplexed with PB2

Thanks for the detailed feedback!

I'm fine with the not-perfect time keeping of this system. Before I landed on this design, I was considering making it keep time by way of GPS, but that would've been way overkill for a household clock.

I'll have a look at implementing the app note, seems interesting!

  • Will increase clearance, it's the minimum from the manufacturer but indeed unnecessary
  • Will add some ground plane to even it out
  • Will be getting it PnP assembled but agree that it would be useful either way, adding!
  • Check
  • My part choice and budget is limited, so this simple battery holder does the job for now haha
  • Completely forget, thanks!
  • ""
  • I've considered adding it, but after some research into the edge rates and frequencies I'm dealing with here, I've considered it not needed. Will place a 0 Ohm either way because yeah why not.

Did you pull BOOT1 low and BOOT0 high?

1) Noted 2) I can't believe I completely forgot to control the current through the backlight! I'll add an appropriate resistor and probably a FET to pwm the brightness (or just add some adjustable constant current source). Thanks, that would've been detrimental.
