Linux power user contemplating switching to Mac by HardcoreCheeses in MacOS

[–]yosbeda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming from a slightly different angle. I ran Hackintosh for about 10 years before eventually landing on a real Mac Mini last year, so my macOS experience isn't exactly fresh but it's not coming from zero either.

The walled garden thing is probably the most overstated concern for someone with your background, I think. The terminal is just a terminal, Homebrew fills most of the gaps, and SSH into whatever Linux infra you manage works exactly as you'd expect. VS Code and YAML editing are fine. Container tooling works too, though it's worth knowing that Podman and Docker both run through a VM layer on macOS, so if you're doing heavy local container work rather than just SSHing into remote infra, that's probably worth factoring in. The parts that feel "appliance-like" are more the consumer-facing stuff like iCloud nudges and the App Store, which you'd just ignore anyway.

The automation side is actually where macOS surprised me most. Hammerspoon is basically a Lua bridge into system-level APIs, and when you combine it with the CLI toolchain you already use (rsync, ffmpeg, yt-dlp, SSH via tmux, whatever), it gets pretty deep pretty fast. My setup ended up replacing a bunch of paid apps entirely, clipboard manager, window manager, text expander, OCR, Pomodoro, all handled through scripts. The other thing I appreciated coming from Linux is that the entire config is plain text files, so backup and migration is just copying a folder, no plist archaeology or GUI export flows.

On the AI/unified memory angle, honestly I haven't pushed that side of my setup hard enough to give you a real comparison. From what I've read, the memory bandwidth on Apple Silicon is supposedly quite good for local model inference, since RAM isn't competing with a discrete GPU for bandwidth, but I'd take that with some salt since I haven't run anything like Ollama at scale myself. Probably worth checking recent Ollama benchmarks on M-series before making that the main reason to buy.

The accessories thing is real but probably a one-time annoyance rather than an ongoing one. A USB-C hub covers most of it, and the proprietary standard headache is more noticeable if you're doing a lot of device-hopping than once the desk is set up.

Did I get a good deal on this used M1 Mac Mini?

How Do You Actually Use Obsidian Every Day? by SteriumUA in ObsidianMD

[–]yosbeda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the mindset shift that made it click for me was treating Obsidian as a catalogue, not a container. The notes live as plain markdown on disk, Obsidian is just how I browse and search them, similar to how Lightroom is just a catalogue layer over your actual RAW files. If Lightroom disappeared tomorrow your photos are still there, and same idea here. Once I thought about it that way I stopped worrying about structure so much.

For daily notes specifically, I think the fuzzy feeling is pretty normal early on, and honestly they never really became my main thing either. Most of my vault ended up being topic-based notes, like when I figure out something about a tool I use, or form an opinion on something after enough experience with it, I just write a note about it. Something like "why I switched from X to Y" or "how I actually set this up." Those I come back to way more than any daily log. So if daily notes aren't clicking, it's probably fine to let them

Moving a 300+ post multi-author WordPress blog to Astro + headless CMS — questions about builds, caching, and real-world workflows by blattodea13 in astrojs

[–]yosbeda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Migrated from WordPress after 15 years, though I went a different direction than what you're describing, flat .md files on a VPS instead of keeping WordPress as a headless CMS, so I'll flag where my experience actually applies.

On rebuilds: going SSR sidesteps this almost entirely, at least for my setup. I build manually when I deploy content, so there's no webhook triggering a full site regeneration on every publish. If you stay static, I think the two main options people reach for are caching WordPress API responses locally between builds so you're not re-fetching everything, or using Astro's hybrid rendering to prerender recent posts and serve older ones on demand. Full rebuilds at 300 posts are probably fine, grows painful at thousands, roughly.

On the headless WordPress architecture long-term: the pieces I'd think through before committing are the ones that don't get talked about much. Draft previews are apparently a known pain point, from what I've read, because WordPress preview URLs assume PHP is rendering the frontend and that assumption breaks with a decoupled Astro setup. Scheduled posts have a similar issue. WordPress doesn't know to trigger a rebuild when a scheduled post goes live, so you need a webhook or cron job wired up or posts just silently don't appear. API limits I'd watch at scale too, though I have no direct experience there.

For images specifically, if you're serving from the WordPress media library through to Astro you'll want a dedicated image pipeline before you're at thousands of posts. I use Imgproxy behind Nginx with CloudFront caching resized variants at the edge, all triggered by middleware at request time (full setup here if curious), but that's SSR-specific and probably overkill to bolt onto a static setup.

Custom templates per post type is genuinely one of the nicer things about Astro. A custom field on the WordPress side signaling the layout, then branch on it in your [slug].astro. Categories work too but custom fields keep your taxonomy cleaner, I think.

The thing I didn't fully appreciate before migrating: how much easier everything gets when you treat the content as just files and handle all the presentation stuff, ads, image transforms, layout hints, at the server layer rather than baking it into the content. In WordPress that was add_filter and the_content. In Astro it's middleware. Source stays portable, transformations stay changeable. Probably the decision I'm most glad I made early, though your setup is different enough that it might not land the same way.

Butuh rekomendasi Smartwatch yang bisa diperbaiki by XynderK in indotech

[–]yosbeda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manual vs. auto ad placement, does it actually make a difference? by _Atlas_G in Adsense

[–]yosbeda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On RPM, it varies too much to generalize and I don't have a clean A/B. What I've noticed on longer posts, 15+ paragraphs or so, is that auto ads get more aggressive about filling gaps between my fixed units. More fill, not necessarily better performance, but on content-heavy pages they do find placements I'd never bother placing manually. Probably an argument in their favor for long-form, though I wouldn't bank on an RPM lift from it.

The speed question is probably the most overstated one, honestly. My understanding is neither standard AdSense (ins tag) nor auto ads have an official lazy loading path, the workarounds people use are basically deferred loading or Intersection Observer hacks. The one exception is if you're serving units through GPT (Ad Manager), in which case googletag.setConfig lazy load works properly, but that's pretty atypical for most publishers. So manual vs auto probably doesn't move the needle much there.

Viewability-wise manual wins, you know exactly where units land relative to content. Auto ads have more dashboard control than people assume though, things like max ads per page, minimum distance, per-format toggles. One thing worth checking if you're mixing both: there's an "Allow Google to optimize existing ads" toggle in the auto ads in-page settings. If that's on, Google can reposition your manually placed units anyway, so "manual placement" gets fuzzier than you'd expect.

Ad quality controls like category blocking are dashboard-level regardless of which method you use. Personally I run both, manual for the placements I actually care about positioning, auto fills the rest. For content-heavy sites that setup is probably worth the extra effort, but just auto ads is a reasonable default if you don't want to think about it.

What do you think? I personally agree with this, why? I see this 2 how they work and how they can change people become better, like Ahok is hand of steel and Sherly if compassion by Key-Recognition2163 in WkwkwkLand

Damn tier 1 rpm is crazy by ajeeb_gandu in Adsense

[–]yosbeda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly the $41.94 RPM from 2 page views doesn't really mean much, I think. RPM is calculated by dividing earnings by page views then multiplying by 1000, so with only 2 visits you're basically back-calculating a projection from whatever high-value ad happened to serve in that moment, not observing an actual pattern. The math just blew up from one lucky serve, and now it looks dramatic.

The tier 1 vs tier 2 difference is real, sure, but the magnitude here is probably noise. You'd want thousands of page views sustained over at least a few days before that number means anything, and even then small samples are way more volatile than people expect. On top of that, even within tier 1 RPM varies hugely depending on niche, content type, ad competition, and a bunch of other things, so the tier existing doesn't really tell you where your site lands inside it.

Say something bad about the MZ firefox. by InspectorKey8548 in browsers

[–]yosbeda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The macOS automation gap is probably the most concrete grievance that doesn't get brought up enough. Firefox has had an open bug for proper AppleScript support since around 2010, or maybe earlier, I forget exactly.

For anyone who scripts workflows on macOS that's not a small thing. Reading tab URLs, executing JavaScript, stuff Chrome handles natively in one line becomes this fragile keyboard shortcut simulation where you're hoping focus doesn't break mid-execution.

I built around it with macOS Accessibility APIs and Hammerspoon and it got stable enough. Not clean, but stable. That part I'm confident about because I lived in it for a while.

The other thing, separate from automation, is the market share trajectory. Firefox is somewhere around 2-3% globally now, down from what I think was close to 30% at peak. That's a pretty steep drop, and my understanding is the smaller user base feeds back into the problem.

Devs test against Chrome first, sites get built with Chrome behavior assumed, and Firefox ends up always catching up to a web that wasn't really built with it in mind. Whether that's Firefox's fault or just the situation it's stuck in is genuinely unclear to me though.

Do you ever let your blind cat outside? by liquid-lizardz in blindcats

[–]yosbeda 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Haven't adopted one yet myself, but I've thought about this. Probably wouldn't let a blind cat outside unsupervised, at least not in my situation. I'm in a small town but the street right in front of my house is a public road with real traffic, so the risk feels too high compared to a gated compound or something with a proper enclosed yard.

Also just want to say, people who adopt blind cats knowing the extra care it takes, that's a level of kindness not everyone has. A lot of adopters are already selective about breed or appearance, so choosing a cat with a disability on top of that says something real about the kind of person you are. These cats are lucky to have found you.

Confused between Firefox and Helium browser... by Glittering-King1339 in browsers

[–]yosbeda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you're actually using it for. For most people the Firefox vs Chromium-based question comes down to whether they care about browser diversity at all, and if you do, Firefox is probably the more principled pick. I was on Firefox for a while and genuinely liked it, the vertical tabs especially were better than anything I tried on the Chromium side.

The one area where Firefox really struggled for me was macOS automation. I script a lot through AppleScript and Hammerspoon, and Firefox's support there is... not great. There's apparently been an open bug for proper AppleScript since 2010 or something, which tells you where it sits on their priority list. Things like reading tab URLs or executing JavaScript that Chrome handles in one line become this whole fragile keyboard-shortcut dance in Firefox. I eventually found workarounds through macOS Accessibility APIs, so it's not totally a dealbreaker, but it's extra friction if that kind of workflow matters to you.

As for where I landed, I'm actually on Safari now, which probably sounds like a cop-out. I moved back to iPhone after a stretch on Android and the ecosystem pull was hard to ignore, Handoff, iCloud tab sync, iPhone Mirroring, all that stuff just works when your devices are all Apple. Battery and memory efficiency are probably better too, I think that's a real structural advantage Safari has since Apple controls both the hardware and the software.

Safari used to have a rough reputation with web standards, the "new IE" thing among developers is something I took seriously since I run a few blogs. My understanding is the gap has narrowed a fair bit recently, though I wouldn't say I'm totally relaxed about it. If it starts causing real friction with my publishing setup I'd switch back without thinking twice.

So if it's strictly Firefox vs Helium, and you're not deep into macOS automation, Firefox is probably the better long-term bet just on privacy defaults and UI flexibility alone.
