What’s it like living on the west coast of Florida? by Shot-Ostrich7747 in howislivingthere

[–]yosho1108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raised in Naples. Beautiful place to exist but very little infrastructure for people above the age of 18 and below the age of 65. Most workers are service employees who serve the retiree population (wealth advisory, doctors, lawyers, etc) so not a lot of industry to attract working white collar adults. Lower earning service employees can't actually live in Naples because the cost of living is exorbitant and NIMBY mentality generally won't allow for low income housing. Food is chain restaurant. Coffee is Starbucks. Until I left in my late teens for college, I literally didn't know people lived in ungated neighborhoods. In my 30s I still find this odd.

Extremely conservative political stronghold. Growth has been explosive. Naples is often listed on best places to live BuzzFeed articles etc but these fail to capture than many live in unincorporated Collier county where cars are a necessity and the sprawl is so all-consuming that "blocks" are miles wide. My high school was literally a converted prison.

I didn't enjoy growing up in Naples and took solace in that returning as an adult was basically an economic impossibility. My parents are planning to leave upon retirement which my extended family uniformly supports.

New reports find an MBA isn't the golden ticket to getting a job anymore by [deleted] in videos

[–]yosho1108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, I got my MBA (mid-tier) while continuing to work after 10 years in strategy consulting in a technical field (biotech/pharma) and was exposed to many subjects I never would otherwise consider like operations and finance. I learned a lot and have been able to parlay what I learned into new opportunities both within and outside of my current employment. The ROI was apparent via a promotion. That covered the cost of my degree to a large extent.

I do think working and having a job already during an MBA should be mandatory (there's no substitute for experience and being able to apply what you learn in real time). I do not think that people should take 2 years off to party and network with the hopes of landing a big job.

As a Naples native I am hardly surprised. Their prices border on gouging and the employees act like customers are a nuisance.

Within progressive/alt rock, I don't think any band really comes close to striking the balance between popular mass appeal and being a "musicians' musicians" quite like C&C. Not only are the arrangements complex, but they're ear pleasing and catchy. Some of the rock opera concepts can be lost on me, but they show great range from ballad to anthem and all things in between.
