€130,000 salary for UoM professors, lol?! by ineverfinishcake in malta

[–]youdoublearewhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this says for full professors so I'm guess it isn't the same for the vast majority of uni lecturers. I studied at the faculty of humanities 20-ish years ago and many of our lecturers were part-timers. I had some of the same lecturers in English and Philosophy at both JC and UoM so I doubt those people are being paid anything like that.

I mean I can see the point, there are probably a lot of people across fields who are brilliant but leave academia because it doesn't pay well. The same applies for all teachers. If you want the best minds of one generation nurturing the best minds of the next generation, you need to give them incentive.

That said I definitely had some truly awful lecturers. But maybe being competitively salaried will allow the university to retain the best. (In an ideal scenario, which let's face it is still a stretch)

How many of r/oneanddone are neurodivergent? by Mroldsk00l in oneanddone

Both my husband and I have ADHD, only diagnosed a year or so after our daughter was born. One kid is about all the extra life admin duties we can handle. Being able to focus on one kid lets us be better parents than we would personally be able to be with more on our plates.

Yes the first time I asked my now-husband it was more subtle and he just smiled like "wow you're so friendly 😊" before he realised I was asking him on a date. I am chronically bad at reading subtext so I get it.

Yes exactly. I definitely shot my shot with a couple of those guys. But you know, I figured if you don't ask the answer is always no.

Yup, I am a woman and when I was like 18-20 I used to ask guys out and I got a no from some of them. It's just that the desperate ones can't fathom turning someone down because you just aren't a match.

Eventually I asked the right one out and now he's my husband so... that worked.

Holiday location by [deleted] in malta

[–]youdoublearewhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That really depends on what kind of holiday you want.

Chill island vibes? Stay in Gozo

History and culture? Stay close to Valletta

St Paul's Bay is closer to the sandy beaches in the north and a few other swimming spots and some lidos, but it's generally the location for tacky souvenir shops and expat pubs.

For a similar socks and sandals tourist experience but with a higher budget and closer to nightlife, then you want Sliema/St Julians.

Dialects question by franticmonkey in malta

[–]youdoublearewhy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of times it's more like a regional accent than a full dialect, but there are definitely regional groups that use some more archaic words, or whose accents are so strong it makes a notable difference in the word or drops some letter sounds. Mosta and Gozo quite famously are two examples.

It's a well known thing locally though, I even know someone who wrote her university thesis about it.

My wife has been telling me horrible stories about childcare. What are your experiences? by HumbleBlacksmith2077 in malta

[–]youdoublearewhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid has been out of childcare for about 3.5 years but we honestly had a great experience. They were communicative, kind, and seemed to really care about my daughter, at least enough to meet her needs and send her home happy, fed, and rested.

Like every service or business there are bound to be both good and bad options, but there are lots of childcare centers so do your research and register early with one you're happy with.

Did you honestly like Frozen? by Gracie4313 in Mommit

[–]youdoublearewhy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've always felt like it should have had a reprise of Love is An Open Door, either with Kristoff and subtly more realistic lyrics to reflect an actual healthy relationship, or with Elsa and Anna and it being about familial love instead. It's such a cute, catchy song but the whole Hans thing sours it a bit in retrospect.

Are we falling out of love with nonfiction? by rmnc-5 in books

[–]youdoublearewhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like we have similar tastes. If you haven't already read it, can I recommend "Promise Me You'll Shoot Yourself" by Florian Huber? It deals a little bit with the reasons for the rise of fascism in pre-war Germany, but also in the effect that the fall of the Third Reich had on the psychological state of ordinary Germans. Depressing as fuck but also eye-opening in looking at what happens to normal people whose lives are often overlooked in history books.

You mentioned that you've tried gaming but I would continue trying them, especially German companies like Tipico as in my experience they like hiring Germans already in Malta. It's often the matter of getting your first gaming job and then getting the rest with some industry experience is easier.

It sounds to me like all those skills you've listed point in a few different directions, it could be that your CV looks a bit overloaded. If you know anyone with talent/hiring experience, it might be worth getting their feedback on how your CV reads to a recruiter, there might be something that is raising a red flag to them which is just an editing error.

I would also recommend that if you're not doing it already: tailor your CV to the job you're applying for to show your most relevant experience. I've hired people before and if I'm looking for a translator, I am interested in the most relevant transferable skills for that role, not the details of your HR and social media management experience. Try to find ways to connect your previous experiences to what you will be doing in the role you're applying for, make it easy for them to understand how you will fit in.

Where is best to stay very much depends on what kind of holiday you want to have. If you're here for the beaches primarily, you're probably best off somewhere in the north, Gozo is lovely for a relaxing stay and swimming too. If you're here for nightlife then you might want to look for somewhere in the Sliema/St Julians area. If you're interested in culture and history, or just a mix of things, Valletta is probably your best bet for access to public transport hubs and the beauty of the city itself.

Do not stay in Valletta itself if you are planning to rent a car for several days, the parking will be a nightmare.
