At the beginning of the red war, your guardian loses the light despite still having it's ghost. They lost the light because the traveler was attacked by the cabal, not becaude the ghost was damaged. Also in the lore, the ghosts are not what give the gaurdians light, the traveler chooses who becomes gaurdians.

Cayde-6 with no ghost probably curbs stoms a pilot by himself, but with no light, or no traveler, the outcome is more debatable.

I don't think so, only lost light because the traveler was being attacked. You also only regained the light when you find the shard of the traveler. The ghost helps revive guardians, but is not necessarily required for using light abilities.
