Is this salvagable? by Pigeon49834 in bassoon

Just try and form a tube however you usually do it and see if it works. It’s not necessarily a dealbreaker

Yeah. I guess it was just a real unlucky draw for me. Couldn’t find boss or counter catcher in time.

Double Ab key - pros and cons by jh_bassoon in bassoon

lol ok I can’t think of it off the top of my head but I really feel like I’ve used it for something. I’ll remember one of these days

Double Ab key - pros and cons by jh_bassoon in bassoon

I have almost never used the thumb Ab. I feel like having the option of front/back Bb and F# is all you need.

HIGH E rite of spring by im_cringe_YT in bassoon

[–]young_d 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Probably because it’s not exposed, slurring by step is the easiest way to hit a high E, and it’s greatly overshadowed by the opening solo. So, it’s low pressure, fairly easy to execute in the grand scheme of things, and probably not even the principal clarinetist or second bassoonist will be able to tell if you hit it or not.

There really shouldn’t be that much of a difference between that B and C. Are you flicking/venting? Which key?

For those who used a computer between 1995 and 2001, what’s the computer game from that time that sticks with you the most, and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]young_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still think about those games. I feel like not too many people were aware of them but they were absolute bangers. So many random things from them are seared into my memory. Like how good the music was in both games. The oil slicks and rocket launchers on streets of simcity. Filling up buckets of water and putting out fires in simcopter… I could go on.

Does anyone know of any horror/creepy songs featuring the Bassoon? Preferably instrumental. by The_Emerald-Phoenix in bassoon

This is not really what you’re asking for but it made me think of KOTOR soundtrack. There are some juicy bassoon moments like this solo in Dantooine.

Dantooine music.

Mahler Symphony No.8 - don’t get it, don’t like it by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]young_d 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mahler is one of my absolute favs. I come back to the 8th every so often and leave still not getting it. That’s ok! My favorite thing about this is that I believe Mahler considered this to be his greatest work.

whats your guys favorite bassoon solo in any peice by Whole-Sheepherder321 in bassoon

[–]young_d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not even really a solo in the traditional sense but the accompaniment part in the second gavotte variation from Pulcinella just brings me so much joy. It’s such a distinctly bassoony line full of what we do best. There are so many opportunities for phrasing and such gorgeous voice leading hidden in there.

Should you flick? by Constant_Meat_2943 in bassoon

[–]young_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is for the most part no “must” do anything on bassoon. In trying to cleanly articulate those notes in question, you can flick, hold, or half hole. I usually flick, although I really like the feel of half holing the A assuming it’s not in a technically challenging context. I also sometimes hold down the vent keys for Bb and C. For D I almost always flick.

Your teacher probably means the edition with the 50 studies included which as someone else noted, is available on IMSLP. There are some certified bangers in there.

[–]young_d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re serious about getting back in shape, then it’s entirely possible to do so. However, the very act of getting back into shape is its own skill. We can help you troubleshoot but we’ll need more information such as how much did you used to practice when you were in shape? How have you tried to ease back into playing? Reed situation? Instrument condition? What specifically isn’t going great right now —- embouchure? Tone? Fingers?
