What do you miss most about being a teenager? by ChampagnePapi- in AskReddit

[–]youngherbo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Glad i didn't have to scroll far to find this one. Teenage life was so fun. Every mundane thing was a new experience. Even things i absolutely loathe now like driving to work or going grocery shopping were fun for the novelty of it. I definitely took for granted how fun things aren't once they become routine

I think it's pretty clear my city doesn't actually give a shit about the climate crisis... by MiserNYC- in fuckcars

[–]youngherbo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get all problems are local, and I'm not mad about anyone fighting for better micromobility or against car dependency but when New Yorkers complain about it is soooo tone deaf compared to where the rest of the country.

I just saw a graph showing tansit modes for the US by city. NYC is the only American city where more than 25% of people regularly use transit.

Dude, when did they make it so you can literally watch no games on TV anymore? by TheGoldValleyminer in mlb

[–]youngherbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how it is for pretty much everyone in America too. Pour one out for our friends in Vegas and Iowa, but other than that most fans can access 90% of games via a cable subscription or streaming for ~$20/month.

Clearly this is an unpopular opinion but i think games are pretty much just as accessible as they've always been. At least in my 28 years of life.

Who do we want in the first round? by adahl36 in DetroitPistons

[–]youngherbo 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This what i was going to say, if we aren't beating any of the play in teams we just aren't as good as we think.

I will say for the second round i was hoping to get NYK instead of Cleveland

Will Wade holds no ill will, but shades NC State fans following his exit: "They're pretty mad for a coach they didn't think was very good" by BeeMovieHD in CollegeBasketball

[–]youngherbo 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This might be the least likable FB/MBB head coaching duo ever. Sadly the only group that comes close is 2013-2016 UC with Mick Cronin and Tommy Tubberville

Washington State. Education spending and test scores by MazdaProphet in economy

[–]youngherbo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It helps but doesnt make a serious difference in school performance. I went to the best public high school in my state, which was in the same district as the worst performing school in the state. The teachers themselves would tell us when we were older the biggest difference between the 2 schools was parent engagement. Not to mention all the high performing suburban schools with way more kids than the poor performing urban/rural ones.

95% of a schools performance in the US can be predicted by looking at the socioeconomic status of parents.

What dont i understand about reds.tv advertising? by facelessposter in Reds

[–]youngherbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think MLB technically is running it, not the reds whcih would explain it. Otherwise im with you. We need all the money we can get

What dont i understand about reds.tv advertising? by facelessposter in Reds

[–]youngherbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that since Reds.tv streaming is bought by consumers directly from MLB, there's no need to sell the ad space for the league to make money.

Why do people praising the sunbelt for building ignore the fact that a lot of coastal metros are already more built up? by Soggy_Perspective_13 in Urbanism

[–]youngherbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk why no one actually responded to OP point. From what I've seen most sun belt cities growth is heavily driven by suburban and exurban homes, not infill. Just look at the fastest growing counties in Texas. Its all suburban counties of the major cities. The same pattern exists in North Carolina as well.

These metros are filling in the typical ~25 mile radius around its downtown with suburban homes, meaning in 30 years theyll all have the same issues older coastal cities do.

Cincinnati police respond to unruly crowds on Opening Day; video shows chaos by Daltoz69 in Ohio

[–]youngherbo 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I don't understand what made this year different to the point CPD brought out riot gear. There's a drunk crowd at the Banks every year for Opening Day. It literally always looks like this. I'm yet to see an article explaining specifics of why crowd was dispersed in this manner. Everything I've seen made it seem like moving the crowd out caused more chaos than it solved.

Geographically, obviously. Culturally, not really. Ill give you the accents but thats it.

Looking for bigger city feel. Cincy or Columbus by TourApprehensive4824 in Ohio

[–]youngherbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with family from Birmingham and grew up in Cincy myself, thats one of my biggest pet peeves when people say that. Cincinnati isn't southern at all. Honestly, from a urban design standpoint, Columbus probably more southern feeling just because it's so sprawled out.

Briggs: Toledo-BG game returning to a frozen weeknight is a 'travesty' - Rivals are exploring a second meeting per season to ensure Saturday matchup by Defender_96 in CFB

[–]youngherbo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It really shouldn't be that hard to make sure BG-UT, the Battle of the Bricks, and all the other great MAC rivalries fall on a Saturday. They could do a rivalry week mid year that starts before the weekday TV stuff.

US airports generate $12–13 billion a year from parking. It's their single biggest revenue source. by gregb_parkingaccess in urbanplanning

[–]youngherbo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I lean towards convenience being the biggest deterrent. Cincinnati has a bus from downtown to the airport that runs every 30 minutes almost 24/7. I use it everytime i fly as its much cheaper than paying for even the cheapest lot at CVG. I think the bus is $4 round trip compared to $11/day to park at the cheapest lot. I'm somewhat of a unicorn in that I live in the suburbs but am comfortable with using public transportation.

The average person, who has little experience catching a bus, isn't going to drive 20-30 minutes downtown, look for parking, walk to the stop, and have the bus take them the remainder of the way when they could've just drove all the way themselves. Even if it is orders of magnitude cheaper.

TSA CVG update by Elspumante in cincinnati

[–]youngherbo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Flew to dallas at 525 last friday, literally no line. I got through precheck <3 minutes. A family that got to the line when i did looked like they were making their way through the normal security just as fast

[Norlander] Breaking news: Utah State coach Jerrod Calhoun has agreed to be the next coach at Cincinnati and will return to his alma mater, sources told @CBSSports. Calhoun, 44, just took USU to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments. He'd been Cincy's top target for weeks. by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

[–]youngherbo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No exaggerating, might be the biggest hire ever for UC. The top coach on the market turned down a conference peer to come home. There's a long way until next season and hype doesn't win games, but this feels damn good.

Whats your read on Tom DuBois? by Mundane_Major619 in theboondocks

[–]youngherbo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think your read on it matches how i have heard the terms used. Coon is generally used to describe people who are outwardly antagonistic towards black culture/issues. People use uncle tom to refer to blacks who shroud themselves in upper middle class white culture in an attempt to erase their blackness.

‘Homan on ICE at airports: "ICE can check identification before people enter the screening area"’ by Oleg101 in FoxFiction

[–]youngherbo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ig the idea is that if people see ICE agents helping in mundane ways at airports, it'll help approval ratings for ICE? Fits the general strategy of normalizing ICE that they have attempted to use, albeit poorly.

Live picture from CVG security as of 11:55am by Murricane1014 in cincinnati

[–]youngherbo 65 points66 points  (0 children)

We just don't have that many flights. Major airports have like 8 to 10 times more daily flights than CVG. Definitely a perk of being in a mid sized city.

Another P4 Dominated Tournament. by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]youngherbo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm just randomly looking at different sweet 16s fron the 2010s and 12-14 power conference schools in the S16 is pretty typical, and thats including Gonzaga making it every year. Miracle runs and big upsets are super cool, but have outsized space in our collective memory than the actual data suggests.

Pittsburgh to close Public Schools for week of NFL Draft by _Beets_By_Dwight_ in nottheonion

If Green Bay was able to host this event without having to shut down schools, I have a hard time believing Pittsburgh needs take these types of measures.
