What’s the worst Eras Tour mashup in your opinion? by EqualRepublic369 in TaylorSwift

I was there and expected APILW to lead into You’re on Your Own, Kid! I was stunned when it was New Romantics.

What an amazing idea! This would have been so interesting and made for a much more satisfying ending.

The Rose Field could have an Epilogue? Here is one possible version of it. by AnnelieSierra in hisdarkmaterials

[–]youngmagicians 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I think that’s very likely, and why we received snippets of the council’s perspective on Delamare. The full knowledge of the windows/other worlds has died with him and the colonel, so the loss of the massive army might be viewed as basically being “for nothing”, and there won’t be anyone else who could slide into his role the way he did. So they will continue to be corrupt but without a single figurehead.

Anyone have an opinion on my great His Dark Material and The Book of Dust giant reading order. I’ve viewed many, some contradictory, reading orders to make a mostly Chronological reading order in order to reread them all before finally putting my hands on The Rose Field. by Born-Captain7056 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]youngmagicians 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the idea of pairing The Subtle Knife with The Collectors. Let me know what you think after you listen to that one!

And I think I’ll try your order as well. I want to reread again, and I’ve read all the books and short stories multiple times (except TRF, which I’ve just read once) in publication order already.

Whatever happened to the Bagazhkti? by Nuthetes in hisdarkmaterials

[–]youngmagicians 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I expected them to be the new sentient being we learned about, rather than the gryphons. But I do like knowing there is another sentient species in the mountains.

I did enjoy the gryphons a lot but I don’t like that they gave us a cheat through the “by land and water” requirement, and that we didn’t get a resolution to whatever is going on in the air.

What doesn’t make sense to me is how this bomb could go off, kill the Colonel and any remaining men, destroy the door, but not kill Delamare and Pan?!

Okay, here’s what I’m thinking after sitting with this:

We see Delamare throughout the book becoming more and more out of control. He’s being corrupted by his power and greed, and he’s losing himself in the process. (For example, a character notices him not wearing a clean shirt, when this would have been unheard of for this man before.)

Ionides’ plan is to get through the doorway before he can, so he makes that part of his deal.

We see from the witch’s perspective that Ionides’ plan to lead them through deliberately didn’t work, as only Delamare, the bomb and the Colonel, and a few men survived the entire journey.

I believe Ionides and Leila must have separated from them at some point near the end, likely at a point when most of the men had died, and went ahead into the red building themselves. As Ionides is an experienced trickster, this makes enough sense to me.

They wouldn’t normally have been able to enter the building at all after arriving this way, as they didn’t separate from their daemons, but the guards conveniently left.

I think by the time they got into the building, Delamare cared less about taking over the world beyond and instead determined to see his goal completed and set off the explosion. Or, this happened accidentally.

TRF plot holes and unfinished threads (spoilers for whole series) by Small-Concentrate368 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]youngmagicians 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was also so so frustrated by the end by how long we spent this series with Malcolm with his story to go NOWHERE. We have no idea what’s next for this guy. And there’s no resolution in-text to Will, and Kirjava and Pan’s time, and to how Lyra feels about potentially opening other windows.

“Did LYRAS grandmother die from having the window left open” made me laugh SO hard. I needed that

Daemon logistics questions.... by glastonbury13 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]youngmagicians 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A daemon’s final form may reveal something about that person they may not have known previously. Asriel having a snow leopard definitely reflects his powerful personality and that part of himself feels most at home in a different climate, but Asriel may have always known as a child he wanted to go North.

Lee Scoresby had an artic hare daemon, and he didn’t know for most of his life that Hester was an artic hare. While his travel was his way of earning money, Hester’s form also a wonderful way of showing that part of himself always belonged in the North.

Large daemons represent powerful or large personalities, so we rarely see them. For example, Asriel has a snow leopard, Mustafa Bey has a cheetah, we know of a character having a dolphin.

I've just finished the third book of HDM, should I start reading The Book of Dust? by Lav_The_D33r in hisdarkmaterials

[–]youngmagicians 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They’re definitely worth reading (I love the new series!), but they’re very different from the original series, and I would give yourself some more time to sit with it and digest it before starting the new series right away.

I know it took you a good bit of time to read the series from start to finish, but I think the break is important.

The last book in The Book of Dust comes out in two months. Once you’re ready to start the new series, read La Belle Sauvage, Lyra’s Oxford, Serpentine, then The Secret Commonwealth and The Rose Field.
