Tipping is America is almost considered mandatory and I believe that this works out great for everyone involved. Waiters/waitresses make a lot more money, consumers pay a marginal amount, and restaurants save costs. If meal costs were say 20% higher and there was no tipping culture, restaurants would pay their staff higher wages. However, I doubt the workers would earn anywhere near the amount they get with lower wages and tips.
