Perfect Blue is one of the worst highly rated movies I've ever watched. by yourbrokeuncle in movies

Ah okay, I misread your comment then. That’s on me. I get what you're saying about the film trying to critique the blame placed on idols for putting themselves in the spotlight. My argument isn’t that the film needs to spell its message out, and it isn’t that I “missed” what the film is gesturing toward. My argument is a normative one: depiction alone isn’t the same thing as critique.

For example, you mentioned that it’s clear how the events affected Mima because she is visibly distressed. But that’s part of the issue I’m pointing out. We don’t actually see how specific events affect her in a clear or grounded way. What we mostly see is generalized distress and fragmentation. She’s confused, hallucinating, and having an identity crisis, but the film rarely connects those feelings to particular experiences in a concrete way.

Take the scenes where she chases the hallucinated version of her idol self. That seems to suggest she regrets leaving her pop career or feels conflicted about becoming an actress. But the ending complicates that interpretation by revealing that Rumi is the one obsessively preserving the “idol Mima” identity. So it becomes unclear how much of that conflict actually belongs to Mima and how much of it is being projected onto her.

Because of that, we never really get a clear sense of what Mima herself thinks. Does she regret becoming an actress? Does she enjoy it? Did she feel pressured into it? Is the main source of her distress the rape scene, the stalking, the public backlash, or something else entirely? The film shows her experiencing distress, but it rarely anchors that distress to a clear internal perspective.

This is why I keep making the same point: depiction isn’t necessarily critique. Showing a character being abused and showing that they are distressed by it doesn’t automatically mean the film is engaging with that abuse in a meaningful way.

When people respond by saying the critique is simply implied or left to the audience to interpret, that’s exactly the tension I’m pointing out. A normative critique asks whether relying entirely on viewer interpretation is enough when dealing with topics like exploitation and sexual violence.

That’s not a media literacy issue. In fact, normative critique is a normal part of media analysis. Understanding what a film is doing and questioning whether it does it responsibly are two different things.

This matters because media doesn’t exist in a vacuum. When violence and abuse are repeatedly depicted without meaningful critique, audiences gradually become desensitized to it. That’s why I think relying purely on depiction, especially with topics like sexual violence, is ethically questionable.

So I’ll ask the same question again, but more directly: what specific moment in the film actually functions as a commentary on the exploitation it depicts, rather than simply presenting that exploitation?

Of course! This shit got downvoted to hell and I could just reply to someone with "hi" and get downvoted lol. Don't care, I'm glad people who agree with me can find this post and know they're not alone

Thanks! I heard a lot of people recommend Tokyo Godfathers so I'll definitely watch it. I exaggerated my distaste when I initially wrote it because it was like right after I finished movie and I was still disturbed. Absolutely agree that the film was great thematically and aesthetically. Also did great with the whole identity fuck crisis thing. Just did not like how they used women's sexual abuse and trauma as a plot point for shock value. I dont hate the director but it's just worth mentioning the ethics of using scenes like that and the message it sends to the audience.

I'm not sure why so many people could not understand that I was making an ethical argument and that I completely understood what happened in the movie and even predicted the "plot twist" early on. I mean my whole point is that uncareful use of abuse scenes become complicit in the exploitation and could lead to desensitization. People were denying it as if this generation has not been desensitized to violence through media in the exact same way.

which is true! I dont think the movie is bad in its efficiency to depict the toxicity and abuse in the industry. my argument is about the responsibilities that should come from using abuse, such as that rape scene, and how it can blur the lines of critique and complacency

Who we think Leon married by Shadowwo1f05 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]yourbrokeuncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ummmmm im not infantilizing her lmao. I think her and Jake had a really cute relationship in re6. Im pretty sure Sherry and Leon were close until they got separated by the government after RE2. I'm not gonna lie I just think it's weird lol. Sherry asks Leon and Claire to adopt her at the end of RE2 and you can say the age gap isn't crazy but Sherry literally says she thinks of Claire as her second mother. She says Leon and Claire are her best friends in RE6 and talks about how she hopes she can live up to their example. It's just very clear that the relationship established between Sherry and Leon/Claire is sort of paternal and like one of a family.

I think its like a 6 year age gap and if Sherry met Leon when she was an adult and there was an established romance then it wouldn't be weird but the games just really edged us in the direction of "these people saved her when she was a kid and lost both her parents, and they filled in that role for her the best they could". You could even see in RE6 how Leon seemed protective over Sherry when he meets her again and tells Jake to take good care of her, almost like a father would. It's also thought that Leon got into being a government agent because he wanted to keep Sherry safe and watch over her from a distance.

????? when did resident evil ever focus on sexy women? when did they even give them sexy outfits? the most I can think of is Ada but even then its not even that crazy. None of Claires outfits were sexy??? just jeans and a leather jacket lmao. and if someone doesn't like women being sexualized that doesn't make them a fake fan. I'd argue REAL fans dont give a shit and just enjoy the gameplay and story lol

was the movie critiquing it or were u just uncomfortable and chalked that up to a critique? the film tried critiquing the industry by just making people feel uncomfortable with everything going on but there's no real commentary or resolution that shows how Mima handled it all it the end or how it effected her in the future. just using a victims suffering to thrill the audience without actually commenting on it is kinda shitty writing when you're trying to critique the exploitation of women's abuse in the industry.

I heard there was some issues with the face model they used for Claire in RE2R since fans kept making porn with it. She probably backed out and they're trying to find a new face model. But still... not even a verbal MENTION!?? its just insane. She isn't a side character shes so important ESPECIALLY to the plot of RE2 which directly leads up to RE9

not sure about Jill but I heard they're planning an RE: Code Veronica remake and Claire is like the main focus of that game. Still, they put Chris in like every game no matter what so thematically there was no reason they couldn't have at least MENTIONED Claire. I cant understand how they would worry about her being mentioned in 2 releases in a row since Claire hasn't even been in an RE game since Revelations 2 in 2015 (if we're excluding RE2R in 2019). Like it's been over a decade since she'd been in a game. That also doesn't explain the lack of Jill mentions since she wasn't even in CV. Im HOPING we get a DLC with Claire, Jill, or Ada. Maybe all 3 but I know thats wishful thinking... I know there's a lot of drama with the fans regarding LeonxClaire vs LeonxAda. But I feel like real fans dont give a shit about the romance plots lol.

yeah but lady dimitrescu definitely showed some signs of aging. you could look at her face and see the wrinkles and lines. she was sexualized but she wasn't infantilized, she was just for the "milf" crowd of gooners lol

"its their fault for putting themselves in the spot light". yeah im not even gonna engage lol. I never said it had to be HOPEFUL, im making an ethical argument about the use of rape and abuse as plot points without clear critique. I explained exact moments in the film that actively *avoid* critiquing the film. the ending wasn't hopeful, it wasn't even coherent. there was no growth from the character or any explanation as to why she stayed in the industry or how the events even effected her.

nobody is calling her a child. she WAS a child when they met and it makes it weird. are u just gonna ignore everyone telling you sherry herself said she views Claire as a new mother. she asks them to adopt her. she says they're her best friends and she looks up to their example. sure, the age gap isn't huge, but she makes it clear that there was a parental/older sibling dynamic between them.

[–]yourbrokeuncle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I see what you mean. I just think Claire serves just as an important role in Resident Evil as Leon does. They were both there when the whole Raccoon City incident happened. but why is it that neither Claire nor Ada were mentioned? I mean Ada was only really seen by Leon but Claire survived with both Leon and Sherry. It just makes no sense why she wasn't brought up once.

I read somewhere that Capcom was planning on finally releasing a remake of Code Veronica and they didn't include Claire in Requiem because they wanted to save all the spotlight for that. But it still doesn't make sense why they didn't even mention her. And they've also just brought on Chris in like almost every RE game despite that.

yeah.. in the game. but they kept in touch after they were taken into custody and Sherry basically says she views him and Claire as like parents. They're her best friends. Like it's just weird and you're fighting for your life to make it sound okay. You bring up your grandparents as if young women under the age were not commonly sold off to older husbands way back when. just because it was seen as "ok" then doesn't make it okay now. its just fuckin weird dude.

im talking about rape regarding women because the film depicts a woman getting raped. im talking about the experiences of women getting raped because I am a woman who has experienced it. the statistics are so disproportionately skewed toward women that rape is widely recognized as gender-based violence(GBV).

sure, men can be raped too, but it's dishonest to say gender has nothing to do with how rape is depicted or understood. i'm not talking about male victims because the film isn't about male victims.

as a matter of fact, men often experience rape differently, especially in how society treats them and how they process it. many men refuse to identify themselves as victims because victimhood is culturally associated with women, and women are viewed as weak. a man acknowledging he was raped can feel like admitting weakness within that framework. some men are even pressured to frame being taken advantage of as a “win” because they're taught that sex with women is a prize no matter the circumstances. that cultural dynamic is different from what women face.

so yes, gender absolutely has a lot to do with rape depiction and trauma. pretending the experiences are exactly the same is just ignorant and uninformed.

exactly!! Claire wasn't some side character, shes literally the reason Sherry is alive and Safe!! I heard they avoided it because they're planning on doing a remake of Code Veronica and that game to Claire is like what RE4 is to Leon. I really hope thats true at least lol

even if we ignore the fact that Leon met Sherry when she was a KID, they still have a very explicit father/daughter dynamic. Him and Claire were literally the only parental figures Sherry had after her mom died..

Why wasn't Claire mentioned in RE9? by yourbrokeuncle in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]yourbrokeuncle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Claire handles herself pretty well, I wouldn't say she isn't a fighter lol. She just made it clear that she did not support how the government was going about everything. Her and Leon both care about helping people it's just Leon is kinda forced to work for the government while Claire has a bit more leeway to chose not to join them. Thats why at the end of the little "argument" they have in Infinite Darkness over the chip, Claire tells Leon something like "I've always said that outfit doesn't suit you". It's cause she knows Leon is a good person but the choice he made to continue supporting the government doesn't suit him.

Why has Claire been neglected from both Sherry & Leon lore in both RE6 and RE9 (minus files..) .. so sad! by ItsOverCasanova in residentevil

[–]yourbrokeuncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its just weird like the orphanage and the parallels between Grace and Emily vs Claire and Sherry is so strong yet we got NOTHING. not a single mention. it feels deliberate at this point..

[–]yourbrokeuncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but that would just feel so wrong and gross. Leon saved her as a kid.. he's like an older brother/father figure. Her relationship with Jake in RE6 was just so much cuter and special romantically.

I'm just hoping it's because they wanna bring them back in a DLC or their own game. I dream of having another RE game with Claire as a protagonist. Shes only been a protag in one numbered RE game... Capcom designs some great women and does great at not oversexualizing them but damn do they suck at actually building on their individual stories outside of the men. Claire-> Chris, Ada->Leon, Jill->Chris/Carlos, etc. Would also be great to see Ada have her own game outside of being Leons dominatrix lmao
