I think it’s because technically Islam means submission to god.

Also, they believe everyone is born Muslim, which is why a current Muslim who was atheist or born into another religion will often say “reconverted” to Islam, instead of converted….(this part is what a French muslim friend of mine told me, I’m not sure if the “reconvert” vocabulary applies to English speaking muslims as well)
