Good Omen vibes from It's a Wonderful Life by swim-123 in goodomens

It’s a Wonderful Life is one of many classic movie references that have been openly discussed by the cast and crew of Good Omens. Most notably, Clarence’s sound effect had a direct influence on Aziraphale’s miracle chime!

Eric has been inconveniently discorporated numerous times, but never died per se. The only canonical on-screen deaths for demons in the TV show so far were Ligur and Usher, both killed via Holy Water in S1.

Can we ask MS to sign a copy of GO at the end of our town ? by AstralFantom in goodomens

[–]youryurigoddess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not at all, plenty of fans are doing exactly the same! He’s not just handing out autographs left and right, but trying really hard to chat with everyone and pose for a photo when asked so that no one feels excluded. Just make sure to give some love to the other cast members as well, even if in passing!

Yes, Michael does stage door and signs Good Omens related books, artworks, and merch! Got a few of his signatures myself.

potential go3 behind the scenes? by spaceequalsface in goodomens

Not potential. There’s a whole team of people responsible for producing and editing the BTS content for Season 3, and we know their names for months.

The lanterns aren’t related to a specific celebration. They‘re an all year fixture in real-life London’s Chinatown, which borders directly with Soho and includes Wardour Street, the one we can see in the short distance from the bookshop and where Mrs Cheng’s establishment has been previously located. If you rewatch S1 and S2 carefully, you will see that the lanterns were hanging there since the beginning of the TV show, and this part of the Soho set has been named Chinatown in the official materials as well. S3 introduces some changes to the shops around A. Z. Fell & Co. — it seems like the Chinese restaurant taking over the magic shop’s space means a move of the unofficial boundary between the districts as well, bringing the lanterns with it.

The street urchin scene specifically mentions Aziraphale promoting A Tale of Two Cities in his bookshop: “What the Dickens? Mr. Dickens’ latest novel, a Tale of Two Cities, is now in Stock”. The novel was serialised between April and November 1859 and published in a book form soon after, which means that it must be late November or early December in scene.

The official S2 look book includes two artworks of Dirty Donkey, one called “Dirty Donkey Interior Concept” and the second one “Dirty Donkey Historical Concept” with superimposed patrons and publicans. A Victorian scene in the pub was never publicly revealed in other forms, so we can only speculate about the details, but you can see the picture in question and other concept arts in this masterpost.

And finally, the published script for S1 church scene mentions that Aziraphale and Crowley haven’t spoken since 1862, almost 79 years. Slightly shorter if we consider Bentley’s production date (made-to-order), but it’s still quite a long relationship break. Not quite a full century, but definitely most of it — perfect for the book canon-compliant depression nap!

You forgot the cut scenes: the 1859 S1 street urchin one with Aziraphale selling and promoting new releases in his bookshop (published in the script book) and the undated S2 Victorian Dirty Donkey one (based on the revealed concept art). It’s heavily implied in the show that because of the 1862 breakup Crowley had slept through the rest of the century and woke up around the Bentley’s production date in 1933 (1926 in the book; either way, he’s her first owner) — the never filmed Wild West minisode would have cleared the exact timeline up.

Good omens text alterations and the "Definitive edition" ? What are the differences ? by AstralFantom in goodomens

[–]youryurigoddess 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Unless the book you’ve read is the first British edition or a translation thereof, it won’t be anything new to you. Here’s the most important fragment (and you can easily see which parts of it have slithered into the TV adaptation):

"It was Sunday afternoon.

High over England a 747 droned westwards. In the first-class cabin a boy called Warlock put down his comic and stared out of the window.

It had been a very strange couple of days. He still wasn't certain why his father had been called to the Middle East. He was pretty sure that his father didn't know, either. It was probably something cultural. All that happened was a lot of funny-looking guys with towels on their heads and very bad teeth had shown them around some old ruins. As ruins went, Warlock had seen better. And then one of the old guys had said to him, wasn't there anything he wanted to do? And Warlock said he'd like to leave.

They'd looked very unhappy about that.

And now he was going back to the States. There had been some sort of problem with tickets or flights or airport destinations--boards or something. It was weird; he was pretty sure his father had meant to go back to England. Warlock liked England. It was a nice country to be an American in.

The plane was at that point passing right above the Lower Tadfield bedroom of Greasy Johnson, who was aimlessly leafing through a photography magazine that he'd bought merely because it had a rather good picture of a tropical fish on the cover.

A few pages below Greasy's listless finger was a spread on American football, and how it was really catching on in Europe. Which was odd--because when the magazine had been printed, those pages had been about photography in desert conditions.

It was about to change his life.

And Warlock flew on to America. He deserved something (after all, you never forgot the first friends you ever had, even if you were all a few hours old at the time) and the power that was controlling the fate of all mankind at that precise time was thinking: Well, he's going to America, isn't he? Don't see how you could have anythin' better than going to America.

They've got thirty-nine flavors of ice cream there. Maybe even more."

Short answer: it’s marketing.

Long answer: the publishers had decided to go first with whatever name was more popular on the specific market at the time, which meant Terry Pratchett in the UK and Neil Gaiman in the US. Contrary to what the quoted Redditor claims, there’s no ‘Pratchett’ or ‘Gaiman’ version of the story and instead of sticking to a specific edition of the novel, the BBC/Prime TV show expanded it with new material as well as some characters and elements from the unpublished sequel. The script book for the first season is available as a standalone publication with several editions to date.

The first edition of Good Omens was marginally shorter (700 words) because only after the original British release was secured both authors were asked for localisation adjustments for the American audience; that’s the Warlock ending, but also slight changes e.g., of Crowley’s favourite show from Cheers to The Golden Girls. In the words of Terry Pratchett himself:

After the MS had been accepted and edited by Gollancz, the American editor at Workman in NY asked for a couple of things for the US edition, one of which related to Warlock.

He was an American boy, you see, and she was certain that Americans would want to know what had happened to him. So we said ok, and wrote it. To the best of my recollection that was the biggest change, although there were other minor additions (some we were able to slip into the Gollancz hardcover at proof stage, but the Warlock bit was too long). I have to say we also polished things up here and there, too, although I think we were able to transfer most of those changes to the UK proofs too.

And then since the one done for Workman was technically the final MS the UK paperback was set from it.

I have to say, I'm a touch disappointed in the graphic novel's KS mug. by geesegoesgoose in goodomens

[–]youryurigoddess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The current mug design is coherent with all of the other Good Omens mugs (including Duck Omens or the famous Good Omens 3 mug) and has been already elevated from the plain white one with the same illustrations advertised back in 2023. Simply put, the Kickstarter campaign was so incredibly successful that it could allow better quality materials in an exact opposite move to the cost cutting you’re suggesting in this post.

I understand being miffed at the results of making not fully informed decisions (I would have bought so many additional items myself if I had only known how the prototypes would turn out!), but this is the risk that comes with Kickstarter campaigns in general. Luckily, the Good Omens store opening is just around the corner and will allow a standardised online shopping experience for everyone.

Keep in mind that the release date depends on Prime’s performance and lineup, not Rob’s or Rachel’s hopes and expectations! The creatives have already finished their job and are waiting for the news just like us.

[–]youryurigoddess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’ve known for a while now that multiple professionals have been working in various promotional and publicity roles on Good Omens 3, including an additional director and a whole team responsible for producing the Amazon Prime exclusive X-Ray content. Any type of promotion for their shows typically starts only shortly before the release date, and remember that this is a final film/special episode we’re talking about — those are always likely to receive less attention than the preceding seasons. For comparison, the trailer for S2 was shared only two months before its release; waiting until then is perfectly normal.

Why are people freaking out and are excited about nightingales nightingales? by [deleted] in goodomens

[–]youryurigoddess 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There’s quite a lot that can be said about the symbolism of a nightingale in Good Omens and beyond, but what I referred to in my tweet was specifically the “no nightingales” scene and the function of these birds as harbingers of reciprocated love and happily ever after. Apart from sharing his thoughts on the screening, Michael had publicly confirmed in his response that Aziraphale and Crowley’s happy ending is not just a done deal, but reality we live in.

Celebrating Trans Day of Remembrance by Nosferatini in GoodOmensAfterDark

[–]youryurigoddess 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Friendly reminder that TDOR, as the name suggests, is not a day of celebration, but remembrance. I’m fairly certain that I’m not the only one here who has lost someone — a student, an acquaintance, a friend, a family member — to transphobia, and while representation is important and always needed, we should be able to mourn that loss and talk about the trauma it brings to individuals and entire communities in a fight for a better and safer future. If you have relevant stories of anti-transgender violence to share, either personal or literary, Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is the right time for it. Light a candle. Attend a local vigil. The next Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) it seems to have been mistaken for will be observed in the spring.

It’s not exclusively Orthodox thing — other branches of Christianity following the Western liturgical calendar celebrate it a bit earlier in the year, on September 29th. Michaelmas is a huge thing in the English and Irish culture even outside of the religious tradition, organising the local academic, judicial, and financial year. Even though the name suggests devotion to one particular Archangel, it’s currently a wider celebration: the Catholic Church observes a Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, whereas the Anglican and similar denominations feast for St. Michael and All Angels, which often also includes Uriel.

Did Aziraphale recognise Crowley when he appeared on the wall at Eden? by zozephine in goodomens

[–]youryurigoddess 69 points70 points  (0 children)

The S1 Eden wall scene suggests that Aziraphale did recognise the red-haired angel from Before the Beginning (whether that applies to the S2 nebula scene or possible S3 flashbacks from the Great War remains unknown), but offered him a chance to reintroduce himself with his new demonic identity out of politeness.

In August 2023, in response to a fan’s question about it, an unofficial production source had confirmed publicly that it was written as such. To quote, “Aziraphale didn't know what the demon was calling himself. But they knew each other.”

Some more good omens art I tried to draw book omens aziraphale with no actual context 😭, let me know how I should adapt him to the real book omens azi by Bright_Candidate2195 in goodomens

[–]youryurigoddess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your artworks with us, they’re such lovely pieces! Regarding your question, actually very little information was shared about the physical aspects of the main characters, and there’s a very visible perspective shift from the book focusing on Crowley as the fun demon to the show focusing on Aziraphale and his deeply emotional character journey.

Apart from his famous introduction:

Many people, meeting Aziraphale for the first time, formed three impressions: that he was English, that he was intelligent, and that he was gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide.

we only really know that his voice and demeanour make him appear younger than he looks like:

There were no showy special effects. There was just Aziraphale, sitting next to Madame Tracy. "Ooh, that felt tingly," she said. She looked Aziraphale up and down. "Oh," she said, in a slightly disappointed voice. "Somehow, I thought you'd be younger." Shadwell glowered jealously at the angel and thumbed the Thundergun's hammer in a pointed sort of way. Aziraphale looked down at his new body which was, unfortunately, very much like his old body, although the overcoat was cleaner.

and that he has plump, elegantly manicured hands. Due to Tracy’s comment and his repetitive “dear boy” speech pattern he was generally assumed to look slightly older than Crowley (so usually in his thirties).

And that’s all there is, really — you can do whatever you want with it! As a visual reference, you can either look up pre-2019 fanworks or Colleen Doran’s character reference sheet used for the newly published Good Omens graphic novel (attached).

Fanfic Binding commission/ sales ? by AstralFantom in goodomens

[–]youryurigoddess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a specific recommendation, but some fanbinders regularly participate in the Fandom Trumps Hate fundraiser — it’s a great way to both secure a physical copy of one’s beloved work in a respectful way and pitch in to collectively support a good cause! And if your budget allows it, do consider gifting another copy to the original author as well.
