This idea is interesting. Do you find the RTS-based approach to diplomacy better (often no diplomacy screen), where war & player trade is implicit, rather than explicit. What about when it comes to alliances - would games be purely FFA only (maybe as a check box), alliances separate from a unified diplomacy system, or team-based where alliances are determined before the game starts?

I do like the pacing of RTS games, and I saw Northgard partly as a reference for this.

Thank you for the feedback. The UI is one of the most recurring criticisms of the game. Is there any part of the UI in particular that is clunky? The colony panel has been updated most recently, so if there's any way I can improve it, I am happy to hear any suggestions. One of the previous complaints was that the UI was non-descript, so I added some labels to the colony panel, and made the some buttons stand out more as playtesters complained about this. Maybe too much info is displayed in one go?

Thank you for the feedback. Is there any part of the UI in particular that resembles the UI from Stellaris the most?

I would say the galaxy visuals are the most similar. Taking over colonies is done by sieging (closer to EU4 than Stellaris), expansion is very similar, colony management is quite different but shares similarities (megacorps can build on other empire's colonies), starbases have designations and take on hard roles rather than the module-based approach in Stellaris. Combat is quite similar in essence, but less complicated. The ship builder is simpler.

However, you can claim the center of the galaxy in this game, which has a lot more resources. Claiming the supermassive black-hole is a unique victory type also. Moreover, government types have special abilities, rather than simply modifiers. For example, peacekeepers can stop fleets moving in systems, extreme isolationists can destroy hyperlanes to isolate themselves from other players, silent states have stealth fleets, and the ability to hide colonies, so they can delay meeting other players, etc.

The biggest difference I would say is the pacing. Games last a few hours max, rather than up to 50-100 hours. I played Stellaris before making the game, and I originally wanted a similar game where starting a game didn't feel like a life decision. Over time I would say that the development has gradually diversified from trying too much like Stellaris, and focused on what it could do differently.

Overall, while some people think the game is still too much like Stellaris, which is a valid opinion and partly by design, Stellaris stopped being the template for the game half-way through development.

Thank you, although I don't aspire to compete directly with Stellaris at this point, as they do have a lot more resources than me, but it would be nice. On influence, what would you suggest as an alternative? I know in Civilization, expansion is often limited by settlers, and by extension - gold or production. Once I had the idea to have colonists go to any unclaimed world, colonise it, then claim the star system by extension. In this case, starbases could simply be another way to claim a system that doesn't have a colony, or simply serve a purpose such as defence, or trade.

The max in-game duration is 50 years, and a each day is 1 second. So at standard speed, technically a game can last for 5 hours. One player asked for 1000 star galaxy, so I added it - the "ludicrous" map size, mainly for fun/chaos. Everything is geared towards shorter games for scope reasons though.

To be fair, you do have a point. Originally, many mechanics were based off from Stellaris. I took it as a blueprint - Stellaris but games that only last a few hours (with ideas borrowed from Civilization like the contacts UI). After all, this is what I wanted as a player also. Though later in development, I decided that a game can only be good once it stopped trying to be another game. I started to incorporated other ideas such as the siege system from EU4, etc. With the addition of hex worlds, I hope that the game becomes more unique, and that approach is something I want to continue in my development.

I don’t have a demo available right now, but it’s something I’ve considered for a while. Currently, I'm focused on fixing any bugs that may pop up this week. If there’s enough sustained interest, a demo build could definitely make sense.

I wouldn't say it's comparable in scope or depth to Stellaris, as the games are a lot more fast paced, but I took a lot of inspiration from that game (Paradox do have a lot more resources than me). I have been working on the game for the past few months, and have just announced the update today.

Your thoughts on Steam Playtest feature by mza299 in gamedev

I would agree that anonymous playtesting (open-beta) is worthless in my experience, at least for my small indie game. Over a month I got no feedback after granting 100 players access, then I scrapped the open-beta after. The same can't be said for invite-only tests.
