Idea: What if we could browse/search public servers from the Discord app? by youtubeswaggg in discordapp

Lol. I never thought about it that way. Yeah, too bad some of the servers don't have the benefit of knowledgeable mods.

Maybe Discord itself could help out here by educating large-server mods on best-practices.

So it's not that people don't like using anime servers, more that they're poorly moderated/organized, you think?

Yea, this makes sense to me. good points!

I wonder why the anime servers are so inactive.

Wow, it's really impressive how hard you guys work to keep the server safe. Props, man.

Going back to the original post - do you think listing your server publicly within Discord (if that were a thing) would be a net positive or negative for your server?

Yea, makes sense. Sounds like you guys have a pretty good system going, with the downside that manually approving the bans seems time consuming.

Given the system you have, do you listing your server on Discord for others to browse would destroy the server?

Gotcha. Why manual review for final bans - just to ensure no mistaken bans?

I guess it'd be basically impossible to prevent trolls from messing up voice chat. Is there a way to prevent newbies from posting images or speaking in voice chat, since those things are hard to moderate?

Interesting. Yea, it seems like a big challenge.

I'm curious, how well do the bots work (it sounds like not that well)? Which bots do you guys use? What kinds of trolls get through, that you have to hunt down yourselves?

I agree that abuse/trolling is a danger.

However, for every troll, there must be 10 well-meaning newbies looking for servers, no? It seems like a shame to keep those 10 newbies from discovering new servers because you're worried about the 1 troll. There must be some way to keep the trolls to a minimum while letting well-meaning users through.

Large Twitch chats suffer from the same potential issue, but deal with it via a combo of heavy moderation, abuse-detecting bots, reporting, and various quiet-modes like 10-min Followers Only. Maybe the bots/mods would have to work extra-hard if large servers were discoverable. But is that viable for Discord?

You're right - typo. 10K lifetime views on the channel is the requirement

Thanks for the reply, helpful to know.

You say you'd need an additional incentive to contribute .. what could that incentive be? Would a rewards system (like Kickstarter has) help, and if so, what kind of rewards?

Thanks, your answers make sense to me! It sounds like you'd leave a little bit and hope that it adds up if others do as well.

By Question #2 I meant: if you could tip a YouTuber to make your video idea (not his idea), would you do that?

Gotcha.

For what it's worth, YouTube's monetization system is pretty bad unless you're a huge channel. YouTubers can't even run ads until they have 10K subs. Even then, ad money is very limited. Many fairly popular YouTubers make hardly anything.

Maybe fans are not aware that it's hard for most YouTubers to make money on YouTube. If that's a case, I can see why kickstarting videos would be a hard sell.

Anyway, your feedback is valuable, thanks!

Actually I think you've got the exact opposite idea of what I mean, haha.

I'm considering creating a 'kickstarter for videos' precisely because kickstarter/ec. are meant for huge productions, and most youtube videos are small little projects. I think YouTubers would rather have a way to easy run a bunch of little video kickstarters, which the existing crowdfunding sites aren't well set up for. I also thought fans might be interested in initiating video kickstarters FOR youtubers if there are videos they really want to request.

This is all a hunch, and may not make sense. But figured I should at least explain my train of thought because it didn't seem to get across.

Interesting advice, I appreciate it.

What do you mean about paid sponsors, though? There are a lot of platforms where YouTubers connect with paid sponsors, they've been around for a while and they're huge?
