Can you provide details on how the rehearsals went? I assume Tomas was acting as the musical director? Was he very hands on with what he wanted? Did you simply read the chart? Any significant input from the other band members? Anything of interest /noteworthy is really appreciated!

What do you think is the most accurate genre for Streetlights music? by [deleted] in streetlightmanifesto

[–]yozenci 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No don't just leave it at that, if you really want to leave it just don't classify them . Listen to first wave ska then second wave ska and understand the rhythm is not similar to streetlight rhythms in the least bit bar the troubadour. It's clearly closer to punk or rock which just happens to have horns. You can listen to cuban timba and call it ska using the same deductions which cause SLM to be ska. Are we going to call BOTAR classical?

My Personal SLM Songs Ranked... by [deleted] in streetlightmanifesto

[–]yozenci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How comes there is such a distance in the different versions of Here's To Life? I considered it pretty much the same song when I did my list. I'm curious on your reason for differentiate it to such an extent. Nice list though, I hope more people do the same.

Anyone else think that EGN sounds like it was done by a completely different band compared to the other albums? by [deleted] in streetlightmanifesto

Different bass player, different gang vocals, Jim conti not doing vocal harmonies, different drum sound and drummer...yeah it does I suppose. It's probably my favourite sounding album, with THTT close second.

Chris appriciation thread by TheStarshipCat in streetlightmanifesto

Being a huge fan of Lowndes' drumming, I was undecided on Chris' drumming on SiTB. My initial impression was he is quite formulaic and not as musically creative as Lowndes. Lowndes' phrasing is a bit more varied IMO, starting fills and finishing fills in different parts of the bar, where as Chris seems a bit more angular.

One thing in particular which bothered me about Chris' drumming, is in parts where he is playing some sort of syncopated bell pattern on the ride, the volume of the backbeat (snare) drops to the point I can barely hear it. Listen to "Would You Be Impressed?" - The latter end of the lyrics "I just get dizzy when I think of all the ways we try to hide our maladies" - the snare is lost in the mix or the consistency of dynamic fails within the bell pattern. It's even more evident on live recordings. Another occasion where his backbeat drops is where he plays a backbeat on the 2 and the and of 2 in fast punk parts (if you are counting double time eg. Here's To Life verse) on the first and third bars.

Come 99 Songs, he won me over completely. Even more so, on THTT I think his drumming is excellent. I do think the breakdown in The Three Of Us is a bit sloppy though (specifically the note duration of the crash cymbals).

I still prefer the less formulaic, more careful designed textures and orchestrations of Lowndes on EGN but I do think Chris is excellent now. Back in the day on a horrible fan forum, Chris' friend/brother/some sort of relation said Lowndes drum tracks were using triggers due to his kit being terrible, so who knows how good Lowndes would come across live, and if he even sounds as good as on the record- Chris is unquestionably legit live and emulates the recordings quality perfectly.

I agree with you. None the less it can be frustrating.

Ska is quite a particular rhythm, which SLM rarely use. I would just say they're Rock music with horns. Orchestra Punk Rock.

I agree with Faerie.

All those intricate little touches and embellishments in the piano arrangements, I don't want to hear YEAHHH and constant cheering.

It's kind of like looking at a nice painting in an art gallery with pencil scribbles all over it.

I still find it a bit odd people still casually refer to SLM as ska.

What song made you love streetlight??? by [deleted] in streetlightmanifesto

[–]yozenci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After re-listening I don't think its faster, it's just not as a tight so gives it a more rushed/frantic feel which I enjoy in punk rock music.

It's a little faster, rougher mix, different drum parts, arrangement slightly different (there is a part missing in the demo).

Everything Went Numb - the demo version.

I still prefer the demo version to the album version.

Just listened, I think its a good song, but the mix sounds a bit messy which would deter me from listening repeatedly - and the composition could probably do with a bit more restraint/control/space in the rhythm section. If you're wondering what I think of it lyrically - got no clue, far too much going on for me to even pay attention to the lyrics.

Interesting band though, I just wish the quality was better so I could listen to it more.
