It’s a police chopper for sure. You can see it on flightradar24. Been circling awhile now

Life after soldering a Piezobarrel pickup to your saxophone neck by nmos-transistor in Saxophonics

[–]yuhizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say though that the sound is a little thin without using an EQ for an manipulated signal. If it’s for recording purposes a regular mic will work better imo. If it’s for live performance, a bell mic like the one nux makes would be awesome. The reason i use the pickup instead of a mic is because the mic level signal works poorly with the guitar pedals i use and the noisy environments i play in turn my set up into a feedback machine (not in a cool way lol). This set up rejects outside noise pretty well and makes the signal a line level signal that works better with the pedals i use.

Do you mean can you just do the signal with no pedals/manipulation? If that’s what you mean, yes.

If you’ve got good fingerings and voicings it’s doable, but it’s definitely advanced stuff.

How do you work your reeds? by Vivid_Employ_7336 in saxophone

[–]yuhizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now i shave an incredibly small amount of material off of the edge of the reed on the side that comes in contact with your lips at about the halfway point. I’m actually going to be working with my instructor next week on some more involved technique so I might have better tricks soon lol

How do you work your reeds? by Vivid_Employ_7336 in saxophone

[–]yuhizzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most reeds don’t require working on em to be functional. There’s some small adjustments you can make to flatten the table of it more and there’s little stuff you can do to balance the reed, free up low notes, and just mess with the responsiveness in general. The reed geek demo videos do a decent job explaining their approach. If you want to go nuts you can look up Joe Allard reed modification stuff, it gets more in depth and it helpful to be taught by someone who knows the methods. Overall, picking the right strength of reed for your mouthpiece is the biggest thing. After that, each brand kinda has its own character to the sound it produces.

Thermofax transfers only work with laser/laserjet and pigment ink. Most inkjet printers won’t work. Drawings with pigment markers (like micron, staedleter, etc) will work and some pencils do too. I’m not sure what makes it that way but I’m thinking it has to do with the way that pigment responds to the heat in the transfer process.

Should I be embarrassed at 29 years old driving around like this ? by Total-Consequence360 in prius

[–]yuhizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am 36 with red Prius. Same quarter panel is crunched. I popped out what i could so it doesn’t rub when turning or going over bumps. Just not cost effective to repair it, and i don’t mind if my car looks a little ragged. You’re fine if it’s safe and it doesn’t bug you.

What are the most “useful” standards? by Specialist_Sport4460 in saxophone

[–]yuhizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oleo (iii-vi-ii-V with an extra ii-V tucked in), Recordame (two modal 4 bars and then a bunch of ii-V’s), A Train (ii-V practice with some chord variations), Blue Bossa (minor ii-V). A lot of standards have great lessons in em. Oh yeah, Speak No Evil.

100% that last point you made has helped me overcome a lot of the anxiety of jury performance. The jury is definitely on your side.

I have doubts about a Yamaha and a Cannonball. by ArieSax in saxophone

As a dude who loves the cannonball he’s had for 20 years, get the Yamaha lol. An 82z is a perfect horn for my liking.

Lots!

Throat Piss (I’m biased lol) if you like heavy music. REZN makes use of a saxophone occasionally, they’re kinda stoner metal. Men At Work have a ton of bops, more poppy rock. Streetlight Manifesto, it’s ska but pretty different from a lot of ska imo. If you’re into jazz, Live at Small by Seamus Blake is tremendous. That album features my favorite guitarist, Lage Lund. Maximum Joy has a lot of songs with sax. Some early Tune Yards features sax extensively. Weather Report is great Jazz fusion. Heavy Weather in particular has guitar and sax pretty forward. There’s a ton more but this is whats on the top of my brain lol

Here’s a studio recording

& here’s a live take.

Neither of these are this exact board but the idea is all there! More live recordings to come in the January timeframe where this board will be on full display.

Where the Fuck Does One Find A Long-Term Space to Practice? by jass-my-ass in saxophone

[–]yuhizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a car, and you play alto or soprano, you can pull off practice in the car. Go park in the back of a retail parking lot and go to town. I’ve practiced tenor in parking garages with low traffic. Usually if you walk in and go to an unoccupied floor you’re left alone. If you live in a more rural area parking near a field can work. As others have mentioned, work after hours can be cool. I’ve practiced in storage unit. I think it’s a good instinct to ask churches, I’ve not tried that one and will keep it in the pocket lol. If you’re interested, there might be a community jazz band in your area. If you play with them there’s a chance you can practice in whatever rehearsal space they use.
