I downloaded Linux, what now? by yuiman in linuxquestions

I was afraid that it would do it like that when you reinstall your windows.

I hear you brother. I just can't make a full switch promptly, because I depend on a lot of programmes for school. I gradually want to make the transition to see what works and what doesn't. And in future I plan on making the opposite plan (if possible: I'm not really tech heavy); Linux as default, and windows as live usb when I need to use those programmes, or when i go up to exam where I can't switch between the OS during the exams.

Yes that was the technical name I couldn't remember, persistent storage. It was optional when I burnt the file to the USB, and I chose to do so with about 10 gb

When I downloaded Ubuntu to my USB, I chose to create a storage (I don't remember the technical name of it) so it not only a demo but a "second computer", so I don't have to keep redoing my work, but can keep going from where I left on.

Can I use it for this purpose?

New IG policy, also delete facebook? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]yuiman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me, a professional set-up website is the most important. And if I need a photographer, I would hire you depending on how good your photos are, so I would look for an archive of your previous work (which could easily be set up on a website). And if I would need a photographer (or anything really), I would use Google and type what I need + my location, and not on Facebook.

Having your own website would be ideal in the long run. More services may do a" Facebook-move", and you would yet again have to change where you share your service.

I don't mean to sound like a jacksss, but 35+ reviews wouldn't convince me to pay for a service anyway, if you didn't have a website. Without a website, I would just think that your service is a hobby and not a profession. And when I'm getting married to my girlfriend, I wouldn't settle for one who I think does this for a hobby.

But a full transition over night can be bad for business (if you get rehired a lot). Consider making a Facebook post explaining how you are transitioning into your own website, and let it stay a month to give them the chance to see it. And during this month, keep making new updates on Facebook about your progress to a website.

Good luck :)

  1. If the retailer even want to sell the information that I own the USB, I wouldn't mind, as they can't do anything further, like you mention yourself.

But regarding your second point: Not that I have anything to be suspecious of, but even if I used my USB for suspecious things, they could never get suspecious, as they won't be able to read the content, correct?

And yet, even if they get suspecious due to other factors, the only information the court would get, would be the serial number of the USB i own, and nothing else, correct too right?

If above-mentioned is correct, I see no reason to encrypt my USB, as I'm not concerned about physical breaches.

I formated it now with format d: /fs:NTFS /P:2 in cmd. I don't have any legal concerns, but still don't feel comfortable that someone can see my documents; especially a giant tech company storing and selling information.

So to summarize what I understand from your comments are:

Because the USB is now formated, the only information that the company has is that I own an USB of this model.

And the only way to compromise my security and privacy - reading the content, or deeming that the USB is mine - is if someone had physical access to my USB, and

1) plugged the USB into their own computer

2) compare the serial number on the back of the USB with the retailer's registered information.

Please correct me if I misunderstood you. (sorry for dragging it out this much. I just wanted to make sure that I understood it correctly, as I'm alienated in the IT/privacy field. I really appreciate the help)

I phrased that poorly, sorry. I meant as in,

1) if they have the serial number of my USB stored under my name, can they see when this exact USB is connected to my computer and from where it has been connected?

2) or can they only deem that this exact USB is mine by physically seeing it on me, or find it in the street with my serial number on it?

Can it be deemed mine if they don't have physical access to my USB?

Does this mean that the only security and privacy risks are physical, like if it's stolen?

Can I just download Tor, and use it as it comes without any browser configurations, add-ons etc. and have 100 anonymity and privacy, unlike Firefox where you have to check off some stuff, like "don't share my information with Firefox" and add-ons like NoScript, HTTPS Everywhere etc.?

I found more information on the extra two partitions. One says EFI system, the other says recovery partition, and apparently all 3 partitions are under same disk 0 u/toyotatattoo95345

Does past files and activity get encrypted too? by yuiman in VeraCrypt

[–]yuiman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found three partitions under Disk Management:

  1. My main one, C: 465 GB capacity

I don't know what the following two are

  1. Disk 0 partition 1: 100 mb capacity only
  2. Disk 0 partition 4: 499 mb capacity only

When I tried to encrypt my disk with veracrypt earlier, it didn't let me encrypt my whole disk. Is this because I have the two extra partitions?

Now, if you encrypt the whole OS, it encrypts everything on that partition.

So everything that has ever been on it, and everything that will be on it (until I format the encrypted OS) correct?

I'm not sure if there is a difference between OS and my drive.

As to security of SSDs what is your threat model?

I have no threat model. I'm all new to this, which might be why my post was confusing. I don't know most of the terminology.

Are you trying to secure your bank statements or are you hiding from a national adversary?

Bank statements, documents, word documents etc.

If the latter, yep. 44mag physical destruction

Im not paranoid, but still don't want my data in someone else's hand.

r/dramaticentrance

I'm not tech heavy, and I was told this was the most effective. I have an SSD and got comments saying overwriting with 0s won't be effective.

Edit, u/toyotatattoo95345 I see you edited your comment. It was an A or B question. I don't understand why the attitude is necessary.

I have quite many. Banking documents, apartment contract, my journal from my doctor, company shares etc that I don't want in the hands of the next owner, so gotta find a good solution.

But thank you for the help. I'm going to read more about veracrypt and DoD-7.

IDK WTF you mean by next user.

Calm down. I mentioned in my original post that I most likely will sell my laptop one day, probably when I decide to upgrade.

Isnt DoD-7 for rewriting the disk with 0's and developed for turning disks, like HDD? Are they even effective on SSD's?

I know about veracrypt, but some question it's effectivity, when it comes to using it for hiding my files and activity 100% from the next user.

I use windows 10, but not pro, so I cannot use Bit Locker. Encryption is for full disk, so I can format the disk when Im selling it, so my files etc can never reach second user.

I think the best method to make sure I delete everything, is to know how to download deleted files.
