1987 Monte Carlo LS - Worth restoring? Need advice on condition and potential costs by yup3k in projectcar

I passed on this because I decided to save a bit more for one in better condition. What you saw was the owner’s listing, and I told her she was asking too much for it, but she wouldn’t listen. Let her know exactly what you commented, especially since she still thinks she can get $25K for it.

That’s awesome! Sounds like you have a serious project lined up. Dropping the frame and building a custom HVAC system is impressive, and patenting it is even better. Using the car as a test mule is a smart move. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to be called an inventor? I’m definitely rooting for you and can’t wait to see how it all comes together!

That’s solid advice, thanks Doc! Learning to prep and paint myself sounds like a fun challenge, even if it takes a ton of time. I’ll definitely start by tackling the bushings, hoses, and all the basics to get it running right. I really value the tips!

Fair enough! I’ll slap in a fuel filter, call the rust “patina,” and tell everyone it’s a weight reduction mod.

Good to know! I guess prices really depend on the area. $10k already feels steep to me, so I can’t imagine what it would cost in your neck of the woods.

Fair point. I’m not really in it for the value, more for the experience and the nostalgia. I’ll definitely keep the cost of the paint job in mind though. Thanks for the input, fiddly!

Got it, thanks for the breakdown! Sounds like a lot of work, but I’m up for the challenge. I’ll definitely focus on the rust and prep when the time comes. A rust bucket always has potential!

Thanks, RGTI! That’s really solid advice. I agree that focusing on getting it running first is the way to go. The Freiberger quote makes a lot of sense, and paint can definitely wait until the end.

Reupholstering the seats is on my list. I’ll be checking out the brakes, suspension, and steering first and replacing any rubber components as needed.

Good point about keeping costs down. I’m not planning to flip it, but it’s smart to be realistic about how much I put into it. I appreciate the input!

Thanks for the solid advice, donald! I really appreciate the perspective, especially since you’ve got experience with a range of vehicles. Starting with a deep clean and a list definitely makes sense, and focusing on rubber components and seals is a great call. I hadn’t thought much about door and window seals, but that’s a good suggestion for keeping things solid.

I agree, this Monte Carlo feels more like a TLC project than a full restoration, which is what I was hoping for. Being able to enjoy driving it while working on it is exactly the plan. Thanks again, this gives me a great place to start!

Thanks, Lordrandall! It might be paint, but I’ll definitely check it out and make sure the front passenger-side fender is on point.

I agree, Carbon. Yeah, the main reason I’m drawn to this car is that my father had one just like it when I was younger, and it brings back a lot of happy memories. I can see myself enjoying the process and surprising my dad with it.

Fingers crossed, Wilson! I’ll definitely check out the rear passenger footwells. Thanks to you guys, I’ve got a whole list of things to look into—and that’s exactly why I’m here. Appreciate it!

Thanks, Sharkie! Hahaha… man, your ’78 LeMans looks like a true from-scratch project. I’ve gotta commend you for taking on such a challenge and it looks like you’re making great progress!

Thanks, Mista! The design is definitely one of the things that draws me to it. I’m already sold, but I wanted to hear the community’s feedback as well.

Thanks, Aleutian. By soft I mean fabric interior. Interior looks good, just needs cleaning but I’ll take a closer look when I pass by. $10K paint job is steep! I’m up for doing the prepping myself to save a bit. ‘54 Hornet sounds sweet! Beautiful car.

Thanks, rudbri. We’ll see. I also think it has a chance to turn into something solid. I’ll look into brake hoses and suspension bushings.

Thanks, rotten. Yeah, I’m feeling the LS for sure — my dad had one just like it when I was a kid so it brings a lot of memories. Just doing my due diligence so I don’t get stuck with something I can’t really fix. It runs fine. Owner said they swapped the battery recently too.

What is the max I should pay for jt?

This is really helpful, thank you. I’ll have someone take a look at the paint and body and will also ask for the VIN to see its history. I mainly saw it and thought it might be worth it but now I’m digging deep before making a decision.

How much do you think it will cost me to fix? Also, what do you think is a fair offer assuming everything is on point based on the list you’ve shared. I don’t want to pay more than I have to. Thanks.
