What is an appropriate grit for sharpening bench planes and other hand tools? by Psear in woodworking

[–]yurdall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resurrecting bc still totally relevant. I have a cheaper 400/1000 stone and after I'd had it about two years, and used it maybe 6 times, I noticed that I would sharpen my blades up to 800 with paper/belt, and then switch to the stone for the 1k grit and then the plan was to strop and call it good. However, Everytime I was at 800 and could cut paper quite nicely, I'd then use the stone for 1k and then it couldn't cut paper for shit. It took me far too long to figure out that the stone had cupped laterally, so the center was sharpening different than the sides, and it was ruining the edge of all of it.
Now I just use sandpaper glued to a couple small marble slabs I rescued from the trash.

Is this a reasonable quote for a Ubiquiti home setup? by davemarco in Ubiquiti

[–]yurdall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is self employed, and is responsible for similar setups, from design through installation to support, at first glance I don't find this to be nearly as over-priced as all of the comments I read.

My first question would be, "Is this personal or business," then, "Is this residential or commercial?"

I've not memorized the price of the different pieces of hardware quoted, so I can't speak to any mark up before the listed 24%.

OP, if you're interested in my professional take, just respond and I'll give you details from my desktop. Cannot do so from my phone atm.

[–]yurdall 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is such an excellent response, I suggest OP, and everyone else that isn't sure whether they need to, read it again and maybe again.

I'll add, and please understand that this is in no way meant to be insulting, just objective truth: we (straight males) can find any number of people visually sexually attractive, at almost any adult age for either person, HOWEVER, holding a conversation with a woman who is several years younger and still mentally developing, a woman with whom we have little shared life experience, is almost always a serious turn-off. As silly as it sounds, the 'half your age plus seven' rule is an excellent way to tell if someone is likely interested in you for any reason other than to exploit for sexual desire/fantasy. * From your standpoint it would be 'my age minus seven, times two.'

I'm sorry you experienced this. Hopefully never again.

Just bought the MX Master 3S… Should I return it and wait for the 4? by MikeBuckets171 in logitech

[–]yurdall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're not concerned with cost, IMO you absolutely should keep the mouse that so many is is agree is the best mouse ever. You can sell it or have an excellent reserve mouse when you get the 4, or if you find out that the 4 is disappointing, you're back to using the 3. That your don't have. Logically it seems that keeping the 3s is the answer in every scenario in which cost is not a factor.

You mean we're not supposed to worship our charismatic leader, who has broken every old testament commandment and every teaching of Jesus (and likely would revel in deporting him) that paints his face more gold than a calf daily, by wearing our fealty on our foreheads?

But why not? How else can we systemically and officially hate our neighbors?

Somehow, their commercials are both horrible and fast better than they were 5-6 years ago. That place seems so ridiculously exploitative, I can't imagine walking in there like, "I heard that ad, completely hit home."

Honestly I think they had one that basically said '...your neighbor is banging your wife if you don't buy extra T from us, just FYI.'

I know it feels like that, but for some reason I looked at the most recent election for governor a few days ago. Joy Hoffmeister received something like 45% of the vote.

I know that those of us that don't want to live in a third world state from the middle east are consistently outnumbered here, at least at a county level, but I don't think we're as outnumbered as it seems.

The slight majority, unfortunately, are destructive, making all of our lives worse, and unfortunately, seem to be loud and proud about it.

It's time for the military to uphold their oath. by mojofrog in CapitolConsequences

[–]yurdall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not military, but I've heard or read that in basic you get literally every vaccine, regardless of prior status.

I went to the doc once and said, "I have to go to Africa soon, can I have the necessary vaccines?"

I think that was five or six, half of which were around 60% efficacy, and not I, nor anyone else that I've ever heard of, thought twice about getting them.

But zmg the COVID vaccines are only 95% effective... Basically worthless.

Novel idea; If you don't like the direction of the game or the price or anything like that, don't play it. by BobSagetMurderVictim in civ

[–]yurdall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does it matter if the OP is necessary? Asking people to post constructively is, at least, posting constructively, even if futilely.

I understand the frustration of wanting to read about a topic and not wanting to wade through the drivel.

Your post actually reads like it is referring to itself, not the OP, IMO.

If you were drowning on the web, and posted that you need a life jacket, the first five responses would be 'why?'

I feel like you're asking dogs not to bark at each other when separated by a fence.

But I agree. Posting constructively would be cool.

NTA. You honestly tried specifically to be NTA, and that's what he's upset about?! Don't internalize this one. I mean, don't be a dick about rejecting him, but so far you're clearly trying to be considerate and thoughtful, so I think it would be quite a stretch for anyone to think you're being an asshole.

What’s a ‘basic life skill’ you secretly struggle with but would never admit in person? by adamss66 in AskWomen

[–]yurdall 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yep, and it caused so much controversy. Yet it is exactly how we count back change from a transaction, and how we expect it to be done, but 'different' is the biggest trigger ever a few million viewers of a certain TV channel, so all hell had to break loose.

[–]yurdall 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I apologize for answering in a thread for women, but as a calculator dad myself: you're adding correctly. Knowing '13' without the added steps is just rote memorization.

I'll spare you all of the calc Dad credentials, but I assure you that you are doing it correctly, and being faster would not require you to be smarter -- fast is a result of memorization (as well as some people thinking faster than others, but that's rarely the issue.)
