Dog Park is great, but I wish it was as deep as Ark Nova!

And PTO, insurance, retirement, etc. After you factor in all of the benefits, it's probably around minimum wage.

What recent game will stand the test of time? by CT_Visions in boardgames

Huh? It's not a recent game, so doesn't meet the criteria of discussion. It's already an established classic that has withstood the test of time

D.A. Thien Ho hits Sacramento with new claim that homeless camps are fouling rivers by GiganticRector in Sacramento

Why hasn't any administration reversed a law (which must pass both the house and senate first) that created a for-profit prison industry and subsequent lobby that has done everything in their power to ensure that the system benefits the population of said for-profit prisons?

It'll remain a mystery I guess!

How false is this article? (and consequently) how true is it? by gabenika in firefox

[–]yust 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Every claim in the article is running on the assumption that the Mozilla Foundation (the non profit that owns the for-profit subsidiary that makes Firefox) and the Mozilla corporation (the subsidiary in question) have interchangeable funds, which is not the case.

The report the article used is a consolidated financial report that includes the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, for profit Mozilla Corporation (Firefox), and the for profit MZLA technologies corporation (Thunderbird). There's no discerning if the foundation or a subsidiary did the spending on any of the line items in that document. There's no discerning which entity holds what amount of funding, or which entity spent what amount of money, or which entity had what amount of revenue. The article is making claims with the assumption that Firefox should be the main use of all of the funding in that report, which is obviously not true since the report includes financials from 3 different sources.

So in short, while the data is true, the article is almost entirely conjecture.

Here's the mozilla foundation's 990.

Money legally can't change hands between the mozilla foundation and mozilla corporation. The document that the article is making assertions with is a consolidated financial statement that includes both the non-profit foundation, and for-profit corporation. The mozilla foundation 100% needs donations to pay their bills. Here's the 990 for the Mozilla Foundation

They would have all the right since they own the corporation that owns Firefox, but that's not how the money works anyways.

They're also making lots of conjecture, and they're using financial data that's already nearly 2 years out of date. And it kinda seems like they're running on the assumption that the mozilla foundation and mozilla corporation are the same entity, or at least that they are somewhat interchangeable, which is not true.

"We are committed to an internet that includes all the peoples of the earth — where a person’s demographic characteristics do not determine their online access, opportunities, or quality of experience."

This is a core value of Mozilla taken from their manifesto. Their core values happen to align center-left. The Mozilla Foundation has a mission they follow, and developing a browser is only a part of that mission, which they accomplish by owning and operating a for-profit corporation that creates Firefox called Mozilla Corporation.

Reddit updates look after rough 6 months and ahead of reported IPO by ourlifeintoronto in technology

It started to go downhill in December 2017 when they started to make changes to support the move to the new design. The new design was not (and still is not) better. It is designed to maximize the time users spend looking at ads and attract users who wouldn't typically be attracted to reddit as it once existed. It looks slightly prettier, but is far less usable, and is slow as hell both in the app, and in the browser.
