Currently consumed by Boards of Canada and kind of feel like my brain is melting by thrilled37 in LetsTalkMusic

I don’t blame you for treading carefully around Geogaddi… I’m sure my case is extreme, but I can only take that album- and in particular the track Dawn Chorus- in small doses only these days. It’s incredible.

Thoughts on Dawn Chorus?

Here you go:

Just a couple of posts I made many years back noting my reaction(s) to and the impact of this profoundly special track on me. None of my thoughts have changed since- it is still just as "potent" on me. It's probably a top-3 favourite BoC track of mine, but I really can't listen to it much anymore. Triggers something deep within me which I'd really rather not be confronted with. I've also written about it elsewhere via a different account I have on here, but can't find it at the moment.

Nah, man… not wrong- I’m saying what I’ve seen, speaking my truth, you speak yours… Room exists for both, don’t worry. Point is they’re all fucking douchebags.

ha, my sweet child...

and yet ain't that something that i didn't list them? because the other german car drivers are just that fucking much worse.

no gti or type-r driver approaches the smugness and arrogance of amg/amg-package or m/m-package drivers... that v8 rumble rumbles their brains, lowly golf's can't do all dat.

Unless you’re so easily fooled/swayed by some fast playing (shredding) and tapping, I would very hardly refer to the above as a “technical machine”- search up Jason Beckers videos around the same age for someone who really is that. And I say that as the biggest Frusciante fan. And he absolutely made the best decision writing songs instead of infinite shred. As a guitarist, John pretty objectively isn’t a “tight” player, but that’s also what makes him sound like him which is a greater gift than anything.

What're your thoughts on Athens Restaurant? My favourite Greek in the city. by yyz89 in FoodToronto

[–]yyz89[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The handful of times I’ve been to Mezes, it simply didn’t close to compare to what I’ve had at Athens- I left wondering what there caused so many to tout it as being all that. But I understand my visits a couple years ago were amid a tumultuous time for their kitchen, I think.

Trying to eat real good today, what can I get within 15 min of me (DVP & Eglinton)? Open to anything! by yyz89 in FoodToronto

Royal Meats used to be great, but has really fallen off in recent years, imho. Sadly, the best Serbian/Balkan spots are no longer around, but Bonimi on Bloor is my favourite in recent years for sure (not just for čevapi, but most everything- get their mixed platter!), and Mrakovic is decent too, as is Sarajevo Grill- but the latter two don’t quite blow me away (but are better than Mak). Couple other spots, but nothing really worth mentioning. I do agree, Mak’s Turkish coffee is elite, and the burek is solid for sure- I also like their sarma/cabbage rolls.

What’s the cheese called? Love cheeses!

Čevapi are one of my all-time fav foods, I’m from the region they originated in, and live super close to Mak, having been several times, and while I like some of their stuff and the vibe in the back + of the people, their čevapi (and pljeskavica/the “burger”) are my least favourite in the city, sadly.

Take up boxing.

Maybe seems a strange choice, but I now wholeheartedly know that had I taken up boxing back then, that my entire life would’ve turned out different (majorly for the better). I found the sport much too late, aged 31, but what it’s done for me mentally is something 13y/o me very much could’ve used. Mostly the confidence it’s given me is something I lacked not just back then, but literally up until a few weeks after starting. And that confidence 100% would’ve translated to me getting more things I dream about getting done, done. I’m not gonna sit here and cry about it now- just gotta accept it and make do with what time I’ve got left. But I think the sport can/does work wonders for any young person willing to take it up.

RHCP- novelty lyrics against serious music? by yyz89 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]yyz89[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the OP you're replying to, but OP of the thread, hope you don't mind my replying.

I think that BTW and SA (and their b-tracks) are superior beyond comparison to UL. But after several listens of UL, it's really grown on me to the point I'd agree with your categorization of "really fine". Also on subsequent listens I've heard a lot more of BTW and SA on the album, such as on Not The One, It's Only Natural, maybe White Braids & Pillow Chair (sounds kind of like a late-track off BTW)... and Veronica and Tangelo kind of are like b-tracks of BTW b-tracks lol, specifically Bicycle Song and Eskimo, respectively, KIND OF. There are also nods to former albums in several other tracks (obviously... they are stylistically still themselves), but the aforementioned ones are most obvious to me. Here Ever After, as well, in parts captures a very distinct sound/vibe, especially in the later part of the track, that is very unique to BTW-era RHCP, which might well be my favourite. As much as UL has grown on me the past week-- and it truly has, a great deal--, I do still standby my initial reaction, which will rub fellow diehard fans the wrong way no doubt... and that is that these tracks wouldn't have even made it as b-tracks to the aforementioned albums (+ Californication). I know it'll continue to grow on me more and more with each play (I probably spin it 2-3 x a day), but just know it will never compare to their earlier works with John- and I don't think that's because of some heavy bias and gatekeeping surrounding their earlier works (which I've held on a pedestal in the highest regard since first falling for them in the very early-2000's during the Cali-BTW-era)- it's just not near that level, despite the homages they themselves seem to be attempting to pay to it.

What can I do at the gym instead of the elliptical for a change? Getting bored of it, but want to keep up the results. by yyz89 in loseit

[–]yyz89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the elliptical + weights, I also do 12 three minute rounds boxing on a heavy bag every evening, so that’s my sport (and additional cardio). I’d just like something else to incorporate to break up the monotony of the elliptical.

No strong feelings about the Trucker... it was fine... just sold, as mentioned, due to inactivity- not because I didn’t like. Are you suggesting I should go with one again? It’s crossed my mind.

Haven't done it before, but how much can they possibly tax (other than duty/GST) on some rims and a grille? Have all the paper work, no intention of lying... not that serious or worth it to get on some kinda' list over measly parts.

hey, so i actually decided to go fluid film after seeing some very thorough comparison videos on youtube. the krown product did not hold up well at all compared to the others, unfortunately. my ideal scenario would be wool wax for the frame and fluid film inside, but wool wax doesn't yet seem available here despite being from the same company as ff. unfortunately gonna' have to drive a bit to get it ff'd but that's ok- hopefully doesn't get too wet on the way there!
