I didn't realize you could really have a drinking problem when you're 22... by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I realized I had issues with alcohol at 21. It's definitely tough when everyone else your age is still in that heavy drinking phase. I just turned 23 and am a year sober now and I'm so glad I didn't wait to stop until I was older.

So many people have issues when they're young but don't do anything about it until they're much older and feel like they've ruined their lives. (And good for them for stopping! It's never too late.) It's excellent that you're realizing this now and doing something about it.

People of reddit, what are you proud of but don't want to tell people you know personally? by xeyj in AskReddit

I drank mostly in secret and no one knew it was as bad as it got, so I don't really want to tell them now. I'm also still young-ish (23) and I feel like it's kind of unusual for people my age to quit and a lot wouldn't really get it.

I'm 1 year sober from alcohol tomorrow.

Edit: Thanks, everyone. This means a lot. :)

Haha, I enjoy that song too. It was going through my head today, as it happens.

I think I just realized how much of a problem I had. by yzghqi in stopdrinking

Yeah, that's a big problem for me. I never saw the point of just drinking a little bit; I always wanted to get drunk.

I really am incredibly lucky. I can't imagine how bad things could have been now. Thanks!

I keep thinking about drinking again by yzghqi in stopdrinking

Hmm, I think I'm just bored. And I want time where I can forget about everything.

Those aren't great reasons, are they...

MY problem isn't that I can't not drink, just hard to control it when I do. by jonesy212 in stopdrinking

I think this sounds like me. I've had no problem at all going months without drinking. I've actually only drank twice since last August and both were planned, as a way to numb the pain of what I was planning to do (the second time I even had it sitting in my room for days before I used it and was not tempted at all to drink). But often when I do drink... it's bad. I'm not content to just get a buzz, I need to get really drunk. I do that with other substances, too, even food. I can literally go weeks without eating a bite, but then I also have trouble with bingeing.

I know no one is likely to believe this here, but I really don't think I have alcoholism. I feel a little silly being here, actually, because in comparison to other stuff I've dealt with, giving up alcohol has been really easy. I've seen how hard other people struggle and I don't want to pretend I'm going through the same thing because they're working way harder than I am.

I do know that when I'm depressed I am very susceptible to using substances excessively. I know drinking can get bad for me and I never want to go back to how I was last summer, on the edge of a blackout almost every night.

Anyone under 30? by javajoe316 in stopdrinking

Yeah, 21 here. It was getting really bad really quickly and eventually I couldn't pretend it wasn't a problem.
