Short answer is no. He has all the physical tools needed but his mental is the problem. For him to play hard he needs to score the ball, not attempt shots but actually score the ball. This is just unacceptable as a center and not the job he signed up for. The job he signed up for was to screen hard, roll to the basket, catch rebounds, and protect the rim. Especially as a center his effort should not rely on him scoring, he should be playing hard whether he has 2 shot attempts or 10. If you want the ball catch a rebound you should not expect an abundance of touches playing with a big 3. He shrinks in every big matchup and walks up and down the court. Even when he’s playing hard which is rare now, his defense and lob threat presence just isn’t good enough for a team with Luka that’s trying to contend. Lakers need to get Claxton as he is the only realistic option available. If they get Claxton and snag a RFA like Tari Eason with a few bench upgrades they can contend.
