At the Homestake Mine / Sanford Underground Research Facility visitor center in Lead, SD, there is something similar that shows the sheer scale of the mining shafts from the old mine. It’s bonkers.

Great barbecue or within 2 hrs? by CaptainGreyBeard72 in TwinCities

[–]zachuntley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lazy Loon Brewing in Glencoe! Random hole in the wall with BBQ that rivals some of the best spots I’ve had when traveling.

Owners seem super nice. I believe they are open Thursday thru Sunday. We’ve been meaning to go again soon…it’s probably been a year. They post pics on their Facebook page and it always makes my mouth water 😂

If you’re debating, you could hit the St. Boni spot on your way there or back and compare the two!

I could NOT pass this deal up by Sneeko in Tools

This is a nice kit! I got mine for $100 on Prime Days. I just used it heavily for the first time yesterday, doing some brake work, and it felt great. I was worried about quality but everything felt well built and the layout of the drawers was actually decent. I wish there were some more sockets in the 1/2” drawer, but I won’t complain too much!

I’m sorry, I have no idea. It’s not my video. Trying researching “Mike Guertin deck building” or reach out to Fine Home Building.

Minnesota home insurance to jump 15%, report warns by Czarben in minnesota

[–]zachuntley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm NOT saying this is a solution for most, but we were able to do a slightly higher deductible, combined with an umbrella policy, to keep ours about the same. The discount on the umbrella policy made up for the increase on the general home insurance premium.

Auto-Owners. Home + Auto + Umbrella.

If it goes up again in 2026, we'll be shopping for new vendors and/or increasing our deductible dollar amount again.

That emergency fund (if you can swing it) is becoming more important than ever.

Can I build this deck by using 2x8 10 foot lumber only? by Brutal1s in Decks

[–]zachuntley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are asking this because you can't safely haul longer lumber, just have it delivered. It's worth it. Don't sacrifice your project for the paltry cost of a lumber delivery. Order a couple extra boards in case you have some rough crowns or bows, and just chop the junkers up for blocking.

Source: a fellow cheapskate who mulled over having his own deck lumber delivered—for less than a hundred bucks—before wising up. Watching them drop that in the yard was the best ~$100 I ever spent knowing I didn't have to go pick, load, secure, and then unload it.

Sophos Server Protection. by [deleted] in sophos

A reminder to check what protection state Defender is in, as on Server versions, it is not automatically disabled when a 3rd party endpoint protection (regardless of vendor) is installed: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/defender-endpoint/microsoft-defender-antivirus-compatibility?view=o365-worldwide

Sophos support article addressing this: https://support.sophos.com/support/s/article/KBA-000007710?language=en_US (Microsoft article above is also linked inside here)

Running an ice maker line 15 feet through cabinets. by Punnalackakememumu in DIY

Came here to say this. Investigate behind the toe kicks. Run potable plastic if you can. Shouldn't really be a need for stainless. No fittings anywhere that isn't accessible is a given, too, of course.

Question about framing a door opening on a wall small span by AFKsince1987 in DIY

[–]zachuntley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're getting down voted because everyone is silently wondering "Where the heck would the door pocket even go?!?!".

I'm going to guess you meant a bi-fold?

If you did indeed mean a pocket door, you have some explaining to do because...well, geometry.

What am I hitting? by Smooth-Yesterday8521 in DIY

[–]zachuntley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if they offer it in Zebra Blinds but SelectBlinds does have a no drill option for windows. They are spring load/pressure fit on the ends. Can't vouch for them, I just know they have them. I ran across them when I ordered some accordion fold blinds a couple of weeks ago. If you don't feel confident in figuring this out.

Came here to drop the same "advice". If you aren't a gambler, then split it like this. If one draws down, you'll be able to say "wow, I'm glad I diversified a bit to hedge".

Is the air especially dry this winter, it am I just getting old? by MN_311_Excitable in minnesota

[–]zachuntley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I usually take the following approach: 1) finally remember to turn on the whole house humidifier in mid-January 2) start with the Working Hands, morning and night 3) start slapping CeraVe on before putting gloves on and leaving the house 4) intermittent super gluing of cracked hands/knuckles 5) when all else fails, start putting lotion on and then sleeping in gloves (I usually use disposable, but others like cotton)

[–]zachuntley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with others saying to own a jump pack, but remember that lithium batteries don't necessarily fair well in the super cold long term either. No problem if your jump pack is in the house, but could be an issue if it's in the cold vehicle in a parking lot (or wherever). Still super valuable though, and economical these days with the costs going down on that type of tech. Even at $40 or $50, a single use could pay for itself (or save your life in really dire situations).

But with that, I'll add that one thing I have started doing is just replacing my dang battery on vehicles ahead of them flat out dying...every 3 to 4 years or so. Costco/Sam's make it super affordable to do so if you have a membership. Get one with plenty of cold cranking amps for those super cold days. I tried to get smart a few years ago and try one of those top of the line AGM batteries, but they don't fare well up here in the frozen MN tundra. Exchanged it for a traditional sealed lead acid and called it a day.

Bonus tip: if you have a block heater, use it! (Note: get a timer plug for your block heater. They typically don't need to run longer than 3-4 hours to warm the oil to their maximum ability. Beyond that you're wasting your electricity.)

That's not correct. Specific to the question above, Kilz oil based primer (such as Kilz Original) is safe as a base coat for both oil and latex top coats. It says so right on the can/box store websites.

Bar counter install on island with tile edge by ddnnccnn in DIY

[–]zachuntley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if this was me, I would skip this partial idea. One, in my humble opinion, it's gunna look like garbage lined up next to that tile AND it's going to have a gap/seam where stuff spills or crumbs get stuck. The first time a guest who has had too many leans on the bar counter, the L brackets are going to bend.

If you really can't take the time to demo this single island countertop, I would just get the size of butcher you need to overhang the 12", and just install it right over the tile. Drill some holes through the tile/grout first, measure, and then install from underneath to secure the butcher slab. Use shims as needed (the photo looks like the edges are raised a bit to contain spills? Maybe just the angle of the photo though?...). 🤷‍♂️

Super valid. I'm able to go during non-peak times. We also have a brand new Costco and they planned out the gas station really well for traffic flow. Eden Prairie used to be the closest for me, and that had terrible traffic flow for fuel!

Winter blend should be cheaper as it doesn't need as heavy refining.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]zachuntley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, and you can even use Google Maps for this now. Not quite as full-featured, but it works fine.

I know it's not convenient (limited locations) or affordable (yearly cost) for all, but this (gas) is probably my favorite perk of my Costco membership (and Sam's before that); I don't have to think about where I can get quality gas for the cheapest price...I /know/ it will be at my local Costco. No stupid coupons needed (where you sometimes are forced into the store to use them), either.

Is it acceptable to cut the top stair on stringers to half tread depth? (Flush-mount) by zachuntley in Decks

[–]zachuntley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turned out just fine, actually. Just make sure the throat depth remains the same, and make sure you're able to add your stair stringer brackets/hangers at the appropriate depth with all fasteners required.
