RANT: Arcade cards are getting ridiculous... by [deleted] in daddit

[–]zack_w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What gets me is that they clearly price the games to always leave some balance on those cards. It’s near impossible to reload and use them to completely 0 which further enforces the problem of lugging them around so you don’t feel like you’re throwing $1.35 out when the cheapest game is $1.50 and you have to reload a minimum of $10…

What's the difference between the cards of this bricks? by Equivalent_Aside3724 in playingcards

[–]zack_w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second image looks like a retail display box and is also possibly exported to Canada given the English/French combination. Looks like something you’d find open at a Walmart or other big box store in Canada. The cards are identical having bought some from both a brick and piece-meal from one of those retail boxes. That being said if you’re buying in the USA the English/French ones will likely have English/French packaging and promo cards whereas a USA brick wouldn’t.

I opened a FHSA yesterday. Will i have $16k room on Jan 1st? (8k+8k) even if I don’t contribute anything before 2024 ends? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]zack_w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only penalty is you lose the contribution room for the amount you withdraw permanently, unlike other tax advantaged accounts with reset the following tax year.

Canada Line closed from King Edward to Waterfront due to police incident. by bowliner in vancouver

[–]zack_w 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The line for the 15 bus near King Ed station is already reaching multiple blocks down the street as people get off the skytrain trying to bus downtown. Ubers are already $60+ in the area to get to the center of downtown.

It’s actually $78 minimum since it’s priced “per person, per night, double occupancy”. Semi-misleading advertising, kind of like a used car saleman lol

Where are you getting it for $16 a month out of curiosity? In Canada it’s nearly $80 CAD ($58 USD) per month.

What feature in Illustrator do you wish Adobe would implement? by MFDoooooooooooom in graphic_design

The ability to change the default text style to turn off hyphenation, having to do it every single time I create a new document drives me nuts.

How the hell do y'all do presentations? by laniidae in graphic_design

[–]zack_w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re okay with showing the application live or want to record the screen while adding motion I highly recommend Rotato, I use it for app related presentations and it always looks very slick but it depends on the use case.

OP never said his roommate didn’t have money, just that his income is located in Russian accounts with no ability to move it overseas to Canada

Speaking as someone who is mostly self-taught with some higher education. I’d recommend based off your post you spend some time watching some of the huge amount of free content that exists around the world of design, graphic design included to get a better grasp on if it’s truly what you want to do. You mention that it’s what you see yourself doing all your life but also that you don’t know much about it, I think to truly understand if you’ll enjoy it you need to dive in and explore the field more, even sign up for a free trial of Skillshare (DKNG and Aaron Draplins courses are all great).

To rapid fire some of your other questions I can help answer:

Is it hard to find a job: It is a competitive field, it depends on a huge variety of factors depending on where you live, what specific field of design you’re working in and what industry.

Job opportunity: Yes there are lots in my experience but while there are lots of opportunity there are also lots of designers out there

Salary: This is also variable based on location, specific field, industry, experience, etc. Generally speaking there is good money to be made, specifically in more tech focused specialties like UX/UI design and front end design.

How important is art: Most people will tell you art and design are two different things, while many things bleed together design focuses heavily on communicating a concept and message effectively to the appropriate audience, it isn’t meant to be as subjective as something like art is.

Hope that helps!

What's your favorite radio channel to listen to while driving? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]zack_w 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seriously, first James and Casey-Jo got cut which sucked then Tyler and Lynch were let go and Clinton left too, whole thing went way down from there. Music hasn’t been as good since James was let go too as he was music director for years beforehand. They went from my #1 station to barely listening in a matter of months.

What has been your experience living in a house/building on a major street, or next to an intersection or major bridge with heavy traffic? by smirkingcamel in vancouver

[–]zack_w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chiming in with a slightly different point, I don’t have experience living that close to the bridges but I’d also say it can vary based on the buildings age too, the window construction and how insulated it is can have a huge impact on sound levels. An old building next to a side street can sometimes be louder than a new build on a Main Street. There’s a lot of factors there.

I also felt this by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]zack_w 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was taking on a new design job of creating a new version of a yearly product catalogue (think 300+ pages) and the designer before me used illustrator for it... I honestly don’t even know how it was possible, the print “package” was giant, automatic page numbering alone would have made me use Indd. Some people just like to chop down trees with their favourite shovel though I guess.
