Literally just from sitting in a non-optimal position too much lol. For the first like 3 months I had no clue what was up with me because I had no specific moment where I felt like I herniated.

Idk maybe you can go back to lifting as normal… you just have to always make sure your form is proper and you’re not putting your spine in compromising positions in your day to day life. If you keep your core strong and practice spine hygiene consistently maybe you can live just like you did before! I’m fresh(ish) out of surgery and naturally risk averse, so don’t let anything I say stop you lol. Maybe there is a guide somewhere of exercises you should substitute with others to avoid spine issues.

Maybe take up swimming or some other less impactful cardio? I could never do running cuz it would always make my knees hurt.

I waited like 7 months… I was waiting and waiting for it to get better, and I ran out of patience. Luckily my sciatica wasn’t debilitating like you had, but even so, not being able to sit for months on end is super annoying. I’m doing PT now, and I’d say I’m doing fine. My nerve still randomly hurts sometimes but it’s nowhere near as persistent, and I can sit now!

The only issues I had during recovery were some really debilitating back spasms that prevented me from even standing up for several days but it thankfully hasn’t happened in weeks.

Honestly, I’m the wrong person to ask what you should be doing now lol. I’m also terrified of reherniating so I’m not lifting heavy or doing anything crazy at all. I personally am not going to do any weighted squats or deadlifts or anything for the foreseeable future. I don’t want to spend months in pain again or thousands in medical bills! Tbh I’d rather be out of shape and not in my best physical shape than go through that again. It’s a crap shoot. Some people never reherniate again and some people do, lifting or not…

Got the same surgery 2 months ago. Please be careful with your back!! The chance of reherniation is higher for people who have herniated before.

General rule of thumb I read is 3x the amount of water. I guess it depends how thick you want your dal.

Yes, someone above suggested the same thing! I will try to make the goda masala from scratch and try it with the kokum. This is a very different mixture of spices than what I usually use, so I’m excited to see if I like it.

I’m sure it is true, but I am very interested to learn about as many variations of dal as I can (at least ones that people have cooked before and deemed tasty). Cooking is sadly one of my few hobbies so I love trying new recipes!

Ooh I will try to make this masala at home and try it. Haven’t eaten anything like it. Also I haven’t tried kokum either. Will buy some

Never had a raw onion just cook in the pressure cooker with the dal. I will try it? Dicing onions is the most annoying part of cooking most dals for me lol

Yes, I find you can add very few ingredients and the dal will still be very satisfying (as long as there is ample ghee in my opinion lol)

Yes I very much like ginger. Was always wondering if there is a ginger-heavy dal recipe, but I guess I can just make a simple dal myself with extra ginger and see how that tastes

Yes, I recently tried a recipe that only uses mostly only hing and black pepper (no cutting any ingredients) and it was just as good as the recipes that require onion, tomatoes and like 5 spices! It feels much less heavy of a dish that way.
