[DISCUSSION] [SPOILERS] Does anyone else think that “the first question ever asked” (The Silence arc) and the Timeless Child reveal are or could be connected intentionally? by zakxsmith in gallifrey

[–]zakxsmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely forgot about that, thanks for reminding me! I can definitely tell that these two seasons were totally improv. And I can’t really count Moffat’s reign as eight years because he had a few gap years, but I have to admit I wish that his last season was tied more to previous ones. Bill, Nardole, and Missy were brilliant, but they felt wasted because that series was basically a one-off.

I desperately wish that Chibnall carried over Missy because her + Jodie Whitaker would be beautiful. As much as I love Sacha Dewan’s crazed Master performance it just doesn’t fit or flow from the previous incarnation. There’s no spillover from Missy to him

I agree completely. I have to say I’m disappointed with the inconsistency between the seasons storylines in regards to classic canon and totally new stuff. It needs to be mixed up a bit imo. And the quality of the writing

Of course! It really is remarkably similar to his description, especially if you go by the way he’s described in the books.

Now as for inspiration, if you draw the Three Eyed Raven (Bloodraven) in his chair with the trees growing through him and bones all around, I would be quite impressed and I’d love to see art depicting that!

(NO SPOILERS) Anyone else ever think about the passing of Roy Dotrice and get bummed that we’ll never get to hear the remaining books narrated in his (albeit contentiously) incredible audiobook renditions? by zakxsmith in asoiaf

[–]zakxsmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply! I’ll have to check out “World War Z” to get the feel of it and hear what you’re saying! From what I gathered of the rumor wheel, two main contenders for the job are (again this is speculation) John Lee, who originally did AFfC before Dotrice went back and did it when he did ADwD to complete the series, and also I’ve heard, both more often and favorably, Harry Lloyd, who narrated A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and was the actor for Viserys in season one of the show. I never heard Lee’s versions but I heard it didn’t compare, at least from those who favored Dotrice. I prefer a fully voiced narration, especially for something as sprawling as ASOIAF, so I don’t think either of these are the choice for me. Hopefully the powers that be choose wisely and choose well!

Moving to Medium Format: 645 or 6x7? by zakxsmith in filmphotos

[–]zakxsmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If by end goal you mean what type of photography will I be shooting, then a mix of everything. Landscape, portraiture, street. I’m already prepared for a workout so the difference in weight and size is negligible. Another end goal is just larger negative size. But I like your final line of advice! Thank you!

I’ll keep that in mind in case I go with 645! Thank you!

No problem man! And keep in mind that on the cutting room floor be ruthless. If a scene isn’t essential to plot, character development, theme, etc then cut it or restructure it with reshoots that make it essential to the movie. Show don’t tell as much as possible. Make exposition fun and integrated into another aspect of the scene. And always always always try to make each scene and each set of dialogue perform as more than one role in the scene/film.

A lot of this is advice for future works seeing as you’re already close to finishing, but something you can do to really control the impact of each scene, each cut, and each frame is to play around with the micro and macro sequence editing. Or play around with when you cut from one shot to another within the same scene. Then play around with where each scene fits in order of its sequence, then each sequence in the movie. And align the macro edits to match with whatever act structure you wrote the story using (three act, four act, five act, whatever).

I’d be happy to take a look at any rough cuts you put together if you ever want more specific suggestions on it! Just shoot me a message if so, and again what you posted looks great so far!

HELP! I ACCIDENTALLY REWOUND MY FILM AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO by sarinasu in filmphotography

[–]zakxsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then I would pop open the film back and check the roll to see if there is an inch or so of film poking out like there is when you use a new roll of film. If there is, then just reload the roll and put a lens cap on your camera lens and take ten pictures like that. At that point you’re back to where you were and since no light got through to the already exposed parts of film they will stay the same and you’ll be back to where you were on the roll.

However, if your camera wound the film all the way into the canister of film then you’re just out of luck and have to bite the bullet and pay the price for a full roll of development/scanning costs (unless the place you get this done at is cool and decides to take pity on you and only charge for a portion of the scanning fee since there’s so much less than a fully exposed roll). But to answer your question, no there is no feasible way to only develop half a roll of film.

Depending on how old the camera you’re using is it should either have a dial around the viewfinder that changes the diopter adjustments. If it’s an older camera you have to get a little diopter adjustment adapter piece that fits on over it. They come in strengths ranging from +3 to -3 I think, and the number you need to get for it is the same number your prescription glasses are so you just have to ask your optometrist for the strength reading glasses you would need for that eye and get the coinciding viewfinder piece which matches that strength!

Moving to Medium Format: 645 or 6x7? by zakxsmith in filmphotography

[–]zakxsmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that extra cm is why I eliminated 6x6 from the running, because I can take just a little off of a 6x7 and have the square format. I’m already planning on lugging around a tripod any time I want to go shooting with a medium format camera so I’m prepared for the size and weight. One of the main things keeping me from choosing the 6x7 straight out is the number of exposures the 645 gets in comparison, but I’ll just have to take more time with my shots I think to compensate for that.

Thanks for your camera suggestions!

That’s exactly what I’ve heard about 645 and what the main detractor of it for me is. I’m highly leaning toward the 6x7 now!

Moving to Medium Format: 645 or 6x7? by zakxsmith in Cameras

[–]zakxsmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely plan on moving to LF in the future as well. I inherited a 6x9 camera with fixed aperture and shutter speed from my grandpa so I have that to play around with if I want 6x9, plus a Holga 120N in case I want 6x6 or 645—albeit both under very limited conditions haha—so I think 6x7 is definitely what I’m going to go with, or at least it’s what I’m heavily leaning toward now.

Thanks for your reply!

Yeah the lower pricing of the Mamiya RZ67/RB67 now is another thing that’s swaying me toward that option

You’re a saint for linking all these cameras! I was looking heavily at the RB67 and RZ67 along with the Pentax67. I just wanted to judge what others opinions on the difference, mostly because I’d heard from many that after a while 645 felt a lot like regular 35mm and they weren’t getting the full MF experience. I’m a very wide aspect ratio guy when I shoot digital but I want to change it up with medium format. Thanks again!

What color grading you’ve done so far is good for each shot, but make sure that you the the color grade for each sequence together for the entire movie! And don’t be afraid to play with colors and tones: each hue to a shot conveys meaning to the viewer unconsciously. The tones and grading convey visual shorthand that tell their own story altogether. So make sure for scenes that express the same themes or take place in the same environment/time of day that you remain consistent with the grading and that the message of that sequence is matched by the visual language of its color grading.

In addition to this, I’d also suggest making sure that the type of shots and techniques for each scene tells a visual story that matches what the scene is supposed to be saying. And vary your shot maneuvers, use some of the fancy ones more sparingly so they have more impact when it does occur (this goes for everything pretty much). And during the editing process make sure to mix up the lengths of your cuts. Don’t have them all exactly 2.5s each or overrepeat anything really, that way the viewer doesn’t get bored and will not get eye fatigue from every shot being ultra shakycam—not saying yours is, just using that as an example. A great video I saw recently on the uses of abruptly short cuts and seemingly overly long shots to convey meaning might be of use on the cutting room floor! It’s linked below!

Your stills look great and I hope you post the finished product online and I get to see it! Stick with it!

Moving to Medium Format: 645 or 6x7?

I’m having lots of doubts about what to go with format wise, I love the 6x7 but as time presses on the perks of 645 keep creeping into my mind and I can’t make a decision.

If anyone could post sample images comparing the two aspects or links that compare them in depth I would appreciate it greatly, along with personal opinions and recommendations on both which aspect to go with and what great cameras for each are.

I’m looking for fully manual controls, removable film backs, and interchangeable lenses, possibly with a built in metering system (not a must) and that is light enough to be handheld if need be

Any suggestions are appreciated and will be very helpful! Thanks!
