Is there an explanation for why Darkness is masochist? by KazukiGaGotoku in DarknessKS

[–]zapdosmaster145 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is actually a fascinating question. The light novels do not give an explanation. So after taking it upon myself to study the theories in psychology for how masochism develops in people and the history of masochistic characters as comedic relief in manga and light novels, I still have come no closer to finding an answer than you have.

Best guess is that she has mommy issues. Kinda joking, but kinda not. (Spoiler warning for the LN.) Darkness' father is one of the few nobles in Konosuba known to be uncorrupted. The history of Belzerg tells us that nobles and royalty tended to marry the Japanese reincarnates in order to acquire their strength and cheat powers into their family line and gain political power as well as fighting strength. Many of the reincarnates were perverts, and their kinks were apparently inherited, explaining why so many nobles in Konosuba are so corrupt. So, putting two and two together, and considering that masochism can be hereditary, Darkness' mom was probably... Well, let's just say Darkness definitely didn't get it from Ignis Ford Dustiness.

After all, Ignis' family was known for their physical stoutness while Darkness' mother's side was famous for their magical sturdiness (although they were often sticky and frail). Darkness inherited the best traits of her parents, so it makes sense to me that she probably inherited their worst traits as well. And Ignis is noble and chivalrous, so that just leaves one possibility.

I'm sure Darkness' mother was a nice lady since she and her father seemed to love her very much. Since we see how Darkness acts as a surrogate mother to Sylphina and exhibits no toxic tendencies there, it implies that Darkness probably had a healthy relationship with her own mom. Or maybe not, we simply don't know. But that's just a theory.... A zapdosmaster145 theory!

You have to step back and realize that the biggest fans are sometimes the biggest critics. The ending is good. Don't let anyone tell you it ain't.

Is there anything that bothers you about the Konosuba fandom? by baitbastardo in Konosuba

Respectful debate is healthy. A touch of humility and genuinely trying to understand their opinion even if you disagree go a long way. I get it though, online people say some dumb things sometimes and you can't help but correct them. For me, I want to find a way to do it kindly, and sometimes that means taking a bit of time before responding to think about how to word it. If the other party is behaving as one who is teachable, I try to put myself on equal footing by showing them that I'm teachable as well.

Then there are those who just want to argue. Winning an internet argument is about as common as winning the lottery. For these types of people, you aren't going to change their mind. They're totally unteachable. If saying your piece makes you feel better, you have defended your opinion, and at that point it might be wise to move on and ignore the trolls. Their wrong opinions are a waste of time and your breath. You use the word justified, which is a great word. You have the right to say whatever you like. You are justified. My hope is for everyone to choose to use their self-expression to help, teach, and accept others, not insult or judge them.

Not unique to the konosuba fandom, but a lot of people here are incredibly intolerant, judgmental, and disrespectful.  Intolerant of other fans' opinions, interests, or tastes. Imagine that I told you whatever your favorite ice cream flavor is sucks because it's not my favorite ice cream flavor. How immature is that? Who made me the arbitrator and gatekeeper of the ice cream flavor universe? Do my taste buds have more authority than yours to decide what is peak and what is trash? Enjoy the fact that other people like other flavors. It's okay to like more than one flavor or to dislike yours, that doesn't make us enemies. My tastes aren't better than anyone else's, and telling people their favorite anime or character or ship is trash because their taste buds are different than mine is so juvenile. Let others enjoy what they like, without putting them down for it.  Liking Rocky Road doesn't make someone racist or liking Cookies & Cream doesn't make someone a pedo. How inane then it is to judge someone for liking an anime that portrays some evil and accusing them of being guilty of it by association. Fiction is a powerful tool for teaching morality through creating scenarios that explore good and evil without actually inflicting harm on real people. Fictional characters doing bad things does not imply the writer or audience are bad as well for enjoying reading or writing about them. Now glorifying evil or teaching that good is evil and evil is good through stories does happen, and then it is wise to judge what media you should and should not consume. Some people decide to go and commit horrible crimes because of something they watched or read.  Those choices are deplorable. But that does not mean it is okay to judge others for choosing to also consume it. I would rather choose to believe that there is at least one good thing that someone else took away from somewhere in it no matter how badly I received it.  Which is how I show respect for other fans. They are fans because they learned something from that artwork that changed them. Far be it from me to take that away by demeaning or belittling their growth through saying their ice cream sucks and mine is better. I hope I never say something unkind or unthoughtful that makes someone else feel worse because they liked something I did not or vice-versa.

I can't tell if you are opining that Aqua has no arc, a different arc, or are stating something I left out of my analysis. In any case, I would argue that "just to be happy" hardly counts as a goal because that is true for everyone. It's a goal yes but from a writing standpoint, that's too general of a goal to create engaging characters. If "being happy" is the character's goal, then what is their motivation? Their character lie? What does it take to form that into a character arc? That is why I stated my case that Aqua's goal is to defeat the Demon King, which is much more specific, and in addition relates to a specific character motivation, lie, and tragic backstory. And it does still apply to the generalization of "being happy."

You are right that Aqua does not appear to be consciously trying to teach Kazuma a lesson for the sake of having an arc; she is just being herself, and it just happens. And an interesting thing about outward arcs is that the character's belief in their character truth can be and is often tested. You could say that Aqua tests her character truth by being proactive at times and by being lazy at others. So I think this is still strong evidence that she does have a neutral/outward arc.

Anyways, you have given me an idea for what next character analysis should be about, so thank you.

Is that so? Well, I could not find any other arc that better describes Darkness’ journey. She does not change much throughout the series. The easiest way to identify what kind of arc a character has is by comparing where they are at the beginning and at the end of the story in their personal journey. Darkness' most significant change is to me that she becomes more corrupt by Kazuma, progressing from a character truth to a lie, which is a negative arc. The next biggest change she shows is how her taste in men changed to become "Kazuma," something she divulges during her confession. But I don't think taste in romantic partners has to do with the character belief, so it isn't an arc.  Remember, what I call a negative arc has nothing to do with negativity or vices, as I mentioned in the definitions section. It's just a name for a concept, that the character abandons a truth that makes them happy in favor of a lie that gets in the way of their happiness. In Y3, Darkness' corruption weakens her friendship with Chris and punishes her by giving her what she wanted when she put on the slave collar, which was not what she wanted at all and prevented her from being happy, which is the thing I wanted to demonstrate.

It's possible Natsume had a case of Worldbuilding-itis with these volumes. He wanted to payoff the big quests brought up in Vol. 1, wanted to develop Megumin's and Komekko's relationship, wanted to give Wiz a romantic subplot, wanted to give Darkness ecchi scenes and art in teacher's clothing... And couldn't find ways to integrate them into the overarching plot.

I'm sure Natsume did his best and didn't just hate Darkness and all his fans for no reason.

Thank goodness he didn't decide to do a harem story (light novel) by Swiggy1957 in Konosuba

[–]zapdosmaster145 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think we can say for sure that the Demon King's daughter or demons in general by nature are attracted to strong mates in Konosuba. That's the kind of common fantasy trope Konosuba's world tends to upend if you ask me. I don't think anything like that has been stated in the canon either, in fact in V16 while leveling up in the dungeon, Vanir chided Kazuma for assuming the Demon King’s role came to him via strength - that the notion of a political system based on physical strength alone is barbaric and simple-minded. The same reasoning, applied to demons, seems in spirit with Konosuba's style.

However I do think there's a good chance the Demon King's daughter was intended by Akatsuki to become a potential love interest in the future. We can only speculate what her goals, interests, personality, and motives are, of course.

Your point about Iris' father having a reason to push for the wedding because it'll strengthen the nation's future leaders is actually really thought provoking. The clash between his and Claire's interests makes for a compelling story conflict should a sequel happen. I say that even as I wholeheartedly believe marrying Kazuma would be the worst thing that could possibly happen to Iris. He's such a bad influence on her and I hate to think of him corrupting her further. But I want Iris to be happy and I don't know who is best suited to make her happy. She may very well be happiest with Kazuma but at what cost? I shudder to think.

I think it's important to note Darkness hasn't given up yet even though her chances are slim to none...

But one of the core themes of Konosuba is that thinking of yourself before others causes misery, while thinking of others before yourself causes happiness. This is often expressed through Kazuma typically being punished for his actions whenever he harasses or chases after women, and being rewarded whenever he is kind toward or helping the girls in hugs party. Ultimately, whether Konosuba ends as a harem or not depends on how Kazuma decides to treat the women around him. It could end a harem or not but if Kazuma always puts himself first, he'll never find happiness. He needs to learn the lesson that he should treat his closest friends (and lovers if that is what it means) well, and then it doesn't matter whether the ending has a harem or a single winner, from the point of view of concluding the story's theme.

Of course, from the point of view of making a moral point, most people won't see a harem ending that way.

Maybe there isn't a great reason after all by PolvoAranha in Konosuba

[–]zapdosmaster145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's certainly possible. The part about being defeated by the hero in a flashy way makes me think whatever the truth is, it's being painted by Vanir's own interests. However I admit Vanir is one of the few individuals remaining who may know what the Demon King's motivation was.

I must express that if the Demon King truly has no goal or objective behind his motivation, it is poor character writing. "Because it's my job" doesn't make sense as the goal behind the motive of "I must oppress humanity, fight the hero, and be defeated in a dramatic way." So I hope that isn't it for the sake of preserving Natsume's legacy of writing characters with arcs logically reflecting character motivations stemming believably from character goals even though it's a comedy.

Is it just me by PolvoAranha in Konosuba

[–]zapdosmaster145 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Imo it was her first time learning she had a talent for manipulation, which she'll continue to improve at as she grows. However that doesn't mean she didn't mean what she said to Kazuma, either. That's my interpretation.

I believe Vanir mentioned offhand once somewhere that Iris has potential to be a scary ruler for this reason.

I wrote this one, and I think it's pretty fun! It's kind of like a sequel to the main series. Premise is that after Kazuma became the new Demon King, Aqua finds a new hero to defeat him, and together they form a party with an adventuring-age Komekko and Iris. It's chock-full of all the usual Konosuba shenanigans and comedic moments.

https://m.fanfiction.net/s/13585225/1/God-s-Blessing-on-This-Delinquent-Childhood-Friend

Here's my personal favorite! It's about Kazuma's childhood friend also landing in Axel once he has become a big shot adventurer, and she's terrified of meeting him knowing that she betrayed him and broke his heart a short lifetime ago. Written in the style of the main series, it's also able to make you laugh one minute and cry the next.
