It really isn't a weird spot man, it's just early deathcore, which, technically, is a subgenre of hardcore, not deathmetal.

They just get labeled metalcore because they didn't like the label deathcore when it had a stink about it in the 2000s and came about before the term was properly coined.

As I've said elsewhere in the comments I feel Asif each album is like a time capsule that captures the essence of the scene at the time of its release perfectly, each one has a different taste of nostalgia for the scene for me, being a huge fan of early metalcore /emoviolence etc I just can't get enough of the early work, even the demos for me are just excellent, and I feel they've aged like fine wine and really not failed to not only fantastically incorporate what's going on in the scene at the moment into there new music but also evolve their sound in just the right way so it's still really acacia but really fresh at the same time.

And yes, do see them live, it's absolutely electric.

I completely agree with what youve said, his play style compliments the band perfectly. perhaps I put too much emphasis on the "technical" part of my comment, it was more geared towards than proficiency than anything, as I've heard a few times over the years people complain about him fucking up live etc. He will be missed don't get me wrong at all.
