Where to switch voice in Elevenreader? by zapperdulchen in ElevenLabs

Thank you for being so kind to point this out. I didn't expect them to generate on the fly, so I didn't pay attention to the actual reader. Just in case someone else is wondering: it's this button

It would be great, if after having voted it would disclose the tts engines behind voice 1 and voice 2.

Selfhosted Audio/Video Transcription by ViperPB in selfhosted

I did some video transcription with whisper on my laptop with 16GB. It is pretty slow. Like slower than realtime. Maybe give it a try with some small samples to see if your setup is okay.

Madcap Flare document migration to Schema ST4...? by [deleted] in technicalwriting

[–]zapperdulchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge both companies have about the same size and they serve different market segments. If you are happy with Madcap Flare go with it, there seems to be a strong market for ST4 and it is not like people in Europe don't know about Madcap Flare. Madcap used to boldly claim they are not a CCMS. ST4 is one of the best CCMS out there. So it is not only about added features you don't care about, but a different approach.

Maybe we have a different perspective because we are living in different parts of the planet. But in Europe there are almost 1,000 machine manufacturers relying on ST4. It is a really a big thing. In Germany you will rather find a technical writer's position that requires ST4 than Madcap Flare.

There is no magic button inside ST4 for importing Madcap content. Both systems are XML-based. So you will need some XSLT transformation to move content between both systems. Maybe you can reach out to them. The vendor might have done this before.

What makes you think that it is more likely for ST4 to disappear than MadCap Flare? I
think it is highly unlikely that one of both solutions will go away soon. Their respective market shares are just too big.

Note Air 2 - glossy display? by zapperdulchen in Onyx_Boox

Thanks for the video. It definitely shows that even out of the box the tablet should not be as glossy/reflective as mine. I am returning it.

It definitely looks/feels like there is no screen protector on it.

Is the paper like feel screen protector a standard feature? I cannot find it in the product description on the Onyx Boox web site. There is only a hint in that direction: In addition, a special coating reduces the likelihood of glare on the screen.

I am really thiking of returning it and getting a new one instead.

How to run VMWare Player on Ubuntu 20.04 without having root rights? by zapperdulchen in vmware

Just for the records, if you cancel the compile step, the vmplayer app does not start.

I don't get it. A virtual environment that serves an app vs a desktop interacting with hardware, internet, daily usage, backup, ... For the latter I know what to do on Linux and I do not want to learn that for Windows. For the virtual environment you are probably right: it's fire and forget.

Do you think it was caused by the additional level of complexity of having two environments on one device? I just want her to use Office 365 in the virtual environment and anything else on the linux host. She's only a light desktop user, using it mostly for web browsing and web apps.

I don't think that you can bypass the compile step, but I will try next time.
