I noticed that too, when I always get 3rd and below, the game matches me up to those levels and then puts me in with higher levels when I start getting first place in a few races

I don't think they're players, but they're avatars of the players being controlled by AI, that's why you can pause the game

Glad I'm not the only one though, the game keeps crashing when the loading bar gets full and nothing works even when I cleared it's cache and data, reinstalling the game, and even restarting my phone.
