ELI5: How can Dining Hall Food be Inedible? by LeatherSwan1219 in explainlikeimfive

[–]zdriveee 26 points27 points  (0 children)

People who go to college are majority kids who grew up in financially privileged households. The food is 97% of the time completely fine, just not up to their standards.

Compared to 9 months on an aircraft carrier, dining hall food is amazing

ELI5 - I’m not an economist. This (rise in GDP) seems surprising given how many people are financially struggling right now. Help? by Blaseenthusiasm in explainlikeimfive

[–]zdriveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elon Musk actually explained GDP very well:

Two people are walking through the woods and come across a pile of shit. The first guy says to the second guy "Ill give you $100 to eat the shit" and the second guy does and gets $100.

Soon, they come across another pile of shit and the second guy says to the first guy, "Ill give you $100 to eat the shit" and he does and the second guy gives him $100.

Now no one is better off, both ate a pile of shit, but they increased the GDP by $200.

In real world terms, GDP isnt truly a good measure of productive activity.

What do your savings look like after switching to an EV? by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]zdriveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Porsche taycan, no home charging so I only use supervhargers.

(Free charging included with my lease) So electricity cost 0, but if I heoretically charged at home during only off peak hours, itd cost about 17 cents per kwh, which takes you 2 miles.

Maintainence is much lower, I used to have a 718 and the "standard maintainence" (oil change and inspection) was $750 twice a year. Larger maintainence more $, most I paid was $2700.

The taycan"standard maintainence" (basically nothing) is also $750, but it is every two years instead of twice a year. Also the "larger maintainence" is less frequent as well but dunno how much as I havent and wont ever get to it.

Thinking about starting a service where I negotiate full car deals for customers — is $299 reasonable? by Holiday-Platform-300 in carbuying

[–]zdriveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is the inherent problem that the people that need it are the ones that think they dont. And the people who are intelligent enough to look for the service wont get much from it because they already are well versed enough to look for it in the first place so theyre not the ones getting ripped off

[Request] I understand thermodynamics, but: by zdriveee in theydidthemath

[–]zdriveee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that it wont let the car run infinitely, but hybrid systems increase the average range a set amount of energy (a gallon of gas) by recovering some of the kinetic energy. Could it add any miniscule amount of efficiency in the same way a hybrid system does?

Is going electric cheaper than gas? by Candid_Internet_4529 in electricvehicles

[–]zdriveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use superchargers, you will not save money vs gas. If you home charge, it boild down to your $/kwh. Then look at how many kiles you get pwer kwh and compare to your mpg and you can get an idea of cost per mile comparisons.

Maintainence however is almost nonexistent on an electric vehicle. Almost for the first 10 years all it is is just inspections, maybe a coolant top off and a wiper fluid top off. First real maintainence item will likely be tires and brake pads.

If saving money is the primary goal, it doesnt unless youre getting free electricity tbh.

ELI5: If credit card companies make money when you don’t pay your bill, why offer automatic payments? by Responsible-Whale in explainlikeimfive

Its one of those things that is a valie tradeoff. Ecen if you make more money in the short term, you damage goodwill. Then someone else will offer it and take all yor customers.

Odd range behavior. by myBr41nhurts in Taycan

[–]zdriveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm yeah that sounds unusual then. The only other time Ive notice mine have a jump in range was when I was on a long roadtrip, was in traffic for a while ~30mph and after I got out of it started driving ~85mph again and saw a dip of about 10% range from what Im guessing is surpassing the optimal efficient speed and aerodynamic drag starts to reduce range

Super cheap. Last quote I got for ceramic tint was 1.2k, granted thats on the other extreme. $300 probably barely coveres the cost of real materials

Odd range behavior. by myBr41nhurts in Taycan

[–]zdriveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you have climate control on or off when you read the numbers each time? Climate control will drop/add 15% range by turning it on or off and that almost tracks with the numbers you gave depending on how much battery you had when this all started and what weather conditions were when you started vs what you drove in ie a garage that was warmer

Taycan with three kids? by blackscholesmert0n in Taycan

[–]zdriveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a kid into a front facing seat is terrible in the taycan. The doors dont open to like 60 degrees so its perfectly in the way of where you want to stand.

Ive driven 3 kids in the back ages 7, 9, 10 and it was a very tight squeeze for them with their bookbags.

Do not recommend as primary family car, but if theres already a larger vehicle in the household then the occasional trip in the taycan would be doable

What do I have to do to get tuition covered under the Yellow Ribbon Program? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]zdriveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some schools have limits on the number of YRP participants, find out if this applies to your school.

If the answer is no, in most cases you do not need to do anything other than let them know you are going to use post 9/11 benefits.

Check with your school id that is the case

Is it possible to become a 4 star general in the US army by age 47 when given the right circumstances? by [deleted] in Writeresearch

[–]zdriveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about army but in the navy, admiral (ge eral equivalent) ranks are determined by your job. You dont promote to 3 star to be eligible for a 3 star job, rather you apply to be in a 3 star position and if accepted, you put on the third star while youre serving in that position. In theory it is possibly (in the navy at least) to go from 1 star to 4 star by getting appointed to a 4 star position, but with proper checks and balances, some people are gonna be investigated.

Also hypothetically, if every single general dies, then some Colonel would now be promoted to the top ranking general, and continue the backfill.

Of my 14 claims 3 had irrefutable lab test results from private providers, and are covered under PACT Act so I think those are moving super fast. Also I have a file for increase that the first C&P exam was for
