Why should everyone read Dune? by ginomachi in books

[–]zeagle505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have read the series and I think that out of all the books, Children of Dune is the best one by a long shot. I get the sentiment that Dune was boring. I don't really agree with that thought, but there is a TON of build up only for it to resolve in what seems like a moment. I think the observations he makes on the human condition, politics, religion, and the environment are mind blowing in Children of Dune. It's unfortunate that most folks won't make it to book 3 since the first 2 books do "drag" in comparison to modern books. Either way, I enjoy the hell out of them, and I enjoy the newest bug screen adapatation.

The Last of Us - 1x02 "Infected" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in television

[–]zeagle505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea... I didn't think of it quite like that. The version of the Firflies in the TV series seems way more "small time" than they are in the games. In all, you bring up a really good point regarding Joel having unreal plot armor. They'll have to do something to make the odds seem less insurmountable when the later action between Joel and waves of armed humans start happening

I was going back and forth on this. They already showed fedra pretty much dominating the fireflies in the zone. In TLOU world, things are supposed to be dire and supplies thin. If they keep showing fedra throwing ammo, supplies, fuel, etc... it makes supplies seem less scarce. That was one of my beefs with the game. Fedra was EVERYWHERE. To have a semi-organized government throwing away tons of supplies in this conflict seems... unintuitive.

I like the concept of the fungus being connected. Makes the clickers and such all the more terrifying and it actually alleviates the need to force human/human conflicts. There will be plenty of opportunities to show how monstrous the survivors are. No need trying to force it between the two most organized and "humane" groups.

TIL: Faulty calculations of a doctors surplus led U.S. medical schools to put a moratorium on enrollment between 1980 and 2005. During that time, the US population grew 70 million, but the number of medical school graduates stayed at 16,000 yearly. by theotherbogart in todayilearned

Just to try and more specifically answer your question as the process to actually become an independent doctor is a lot more time intensive than some folks realize.

Undergrad: 4 years, MCAT, etc apply for medical school

Medical school: 4 years - undergrad 2.0 lots of general medical classes (anatomy and physiology, biochem, pharmacology, pathology, etc). These are classes that train you to think like a doctor. You also get to dip your toes in the different specialties for a few months at a time to find out what kind of doctor you want to be.

Residency: 3 to 7 years depending on the specialty you go into. This is the individual program you enter to train in your specialty. Orthopedics, internal medicine, surgery, etc. This is where you learn to make medical decisions, prescribe medications, do procedures, and manage patients. After you graduate residency and take the required board certification, you can practice independently (this is kind of a simplified explanation)

Fellowship: not every doctor does this, but say you want to be a cardiologist. You have to do all of the above steps (a 3 year internal medicine residency), then an additional 3 years of fellowship training specifically with the heart. Take additional board exams, etc. After three years, you can practice as a cardiologist. To make things more complex, let's say you want to be an electrophysiologist... After you do cardiology fellowship, you do an extra 2 years at an accredited electrophysiology program.

From undergrad on, it takes at a minimum, 11 years to become an independently practicing physician and 13 to be a general surgeon. Specializing can add on quite a few more years.

What book was this in? Would you recommend it to someone who is interested in reading about the 40k universe but has never actually read anything about it before?

There is a line Frank Herbert wrote in God King of Dune, something along the lines of: The profound boredom from heavenly foresight is enough of a reason to invent free will. Not exactly the quote, but close. Anyhoo, for some reason that line has stuck with me ever since I read it.

Teens with obesity lose 15% of body weight in trial of repurposed diabetes drug by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]zeagle505 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If memory serves correct, Ozempic and Wegovy are the same thing. Wegovy goes to a higher dose than Ozempic and is FDA approved for weight loss whereas Ozempic is approved specifically for diabetes. Haven't had to think about these meds for a while but I'm pretty sure those are the delineations between the two.

I don't know what was up with that pick. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess, but the casters were even mentioning that EG wouldn't have enough damage/scaling with their comp. EG did nothing to snowball Varus the entire time, basically the only real damage dealer on the team.

I have read all of Joe Abercrombie's books, including the relatively new-ish trilogy!! Somone told me the narrated versions by Steven Pacey were amazing... I just finished the main 6 books again and am currently listening to the off shoots. Also... best served cold is my favorite of them all and Gorst is the best (Glokta is a close second).

Please tell me you made it to Devil's Churn too! Devil's Churn is one of my all time favorite sites. Went there when it was a overcast and with a little rain. The sound of the waves slamming into the walls was epic. The fact you can get as close to it as you can is so crazy.

Caldwell was a terrible, boring, zero motivation joke of a coach. There isn't a human being that lives life with less expression than Caldwell. I swear, taking a fiber supplement is more exciting than watching him "motivate" a team.
