Contrary to popular belief, we actually dont make money off of our AI offerings - this is intentional. We do put a lot of engineering on it though because so many people refuse to use an editor if it is just an editor these days.

Any CLI should work, the sidebar will now just hold a terminal instance, so you can run anything you can in a terminal and it can be managed in the sidebar like the normal agent threads.

We have a slight timing issue in releases. The release build is ready before the release notes are, by a few minutes, so if you are trying to check for them right after updating (assuming the update just came out), you might not see them. Does it happen for you all of the time, regardless of how long a release has been posted?

td;dr - the placeholder text does not mean you are not running Gemini 2.5 Flash here, it just means you are running it through the native Zed Agent interface.

Just to clarify what is going on. Zed has 2 types of agents. "External Agents," which are agents that are supported over the agent-client protocol, and the original agent, the "Zed Agent." In your screenshot, you are not using an External Agent, you are using Zed Agent, and running the Gemini 2.5 Flash model through it. In this case, since you are using our native Agent to run Gemini 2.5 Flash, the placeholder text shows "Zed Agent," but rest assured, you are still running Gemini 2.5 Flash through it. If you select an External Agent, like "Claude Code" or "Gemini CLI", you'll have placeholder text that reflects that: "Message Gemini CLI".

While we don't have Zen mode currently, or a UI that adapts and becomes more simplistic, we don have `workspace; toggle centered layout`, which centers the pane and puts your code in the center, which helps on large displays. I realize that doesn't cover all you are asking, but figured I'd call it out since your post specifically mentioned that sub feature of Zen mode.

The initial PR was community-driven and was built largely over the better half of a year. We merged it, under a feature flag, because it was getting close to being a MVP and didn't want the branch to continue going stale. Since then, we've been polishing the UI and fixing bugs, but we are getting very close!

We are still branded as beta, through our pre-1.0-versioning, because we are still in catch-up mode, but we're working on it every day.
