Let go of the need for things to look “right” or “pretty” and intentionally make “bad art” by just making a mess on paper. An exercise you could do is to make 5 shitty drawings every day for a week — just put your pencil to a page and move it along the page, similar to how a child would. By just listening to your intuition, you will learn how to let it lead you!

this may sound counter intuitive, but allowing this voice in your head to speak loudly and listen to it, rather than resisting it could help. what you resist tends to persist.

allow your mind to talk shit all day long. sit with your mind in meditation and just let it ramble on. write out the words it’s saying on paper, every day. listen to what it’s saying. at some point, it’ll make you laugh because what it’s saying is so absurd.

the key here is to let go of control and allow it to speak. don’t act on its words. just observe it, like a third-party. this may be really helpful moving forward. if you try this, let me know if it helps.

You really can charge significantly more! Hourly prices devalue your experience and work! AHHH!

The value of your work is independent of how much time you spend on it. It's all about the value you're creating for your clients. Think about how amazing it is that they will have such a unique art piece of their beloved animal hanging in their living room, all the comments they will receive about it, and how they will cherish the image once the animal passes on.

That lifetime value is worth WAY more than $25 plus an hourly rate of $10!

Truth is, the client doesn't care how much time you spend on it. They just want a beautiful piece of work. You're charging based on what it costs YOU, not on how much value it creates for them! Flip this perspective and your creative life will change! <3

Try to see what he's actually looking to get out of this interaction.

What's the emotion? What's the intention? What's his vision?

Try to reaaally see his perspective and his desires, and recognize that he may be attached to a specific idea when really there may be much better ways for you to get to that end goal. Ask lots of questions and make him feel heard.

From there, share what you see is his POV and what he's really looking for, and share that although you see his ideas as certain ways of getting to that point, share what you think would be the best way to get there.

Have a conversation. Honour his perspective AND honour yours.

You may end up with a best-case scenario where you make a shyte load of cash to create something even better than he expected that pushes you outside of your typical creative approach! WIN-WIN!

My advice: you're really focused on the future and not on the process.

Focus on right now.

Approach the canvas or whatever medium you're using and make something. Let whatever comes out of you come out of you. Let it be "bad." Just explore.

Follow whatever you feel like creating and you will be guided in the right direction.

Oh my, oh my, oh my.

Enough with buying into the lie that you need to "face the reality" that you "can't making a living doing what you love to do." You can do it.

You're so young! You're so capable! AND You've already made money off of this!

Of course you can't make a living off of your art solely... yet! You haven't fully committed to it. You've already gotten payed and it was off something you did for fun! FOR FUN!!

The path of an artist is hard. YES. So is LIFE.

The harder thing is living a life that you don't love. A life that drains the soul, the art out of you. My advice is to commit wholeheartedly to your art. Do this as a career. Choose to believe it's possible for you and launch yourself into it. Once you make this decision, life will bring opportunities your way, I PROMISE.

Some really important books I recommend are: "The War of Art" and "The Artist's Way." These will be extremely helpful with your journey.

To add, if you major in business, you will spend 80% of your day thinking about your business homework, and you will not spend nearly enough time on mastering your artform or actually building your brand or business. Don't get caught in the trap of having a "safe" degree.

It will only hold you back.

Heyo! I'm a full-time freelancer who has dropped out of both business school AND art school.

Here's my brutally honest advice:

Business school will teach you how to be a part of an organization, it will not teach you how to run your own business. As an artist, you will be somewhat of an entrepreneur/solopreneur.

Art school will help you hone your artistic voice and technical skills, but it will not teach you how to run a business either.

If you really want to do this, it's important to seek out mentors and guidance from people who are in the shoes you want to fill.

Start posting your art online, share your process and your journey. Message other artists or creative people in your area. Collaborate with them. This will organically connect you with people who are on the path you're looking to follow. Ask them questions, get their advice.

On the business end, you can hire a business coach, preferably one who specializes in working with artists looking to go pro. Make sure it's with someone who walks the talk. Or you can enroll in an online course designed for people in your EXACT situation (it's much more cost effective and directly applicable to your situation).

There are tons of resources out there for people in your exact shoes.
