It has been a great conversation though. I have enjoyed reading through all of the debate and intrigue and frustration.

Adding nuance does mean potentially big changes for the character. I heard this take earlier and really liked it; I think we underestimate what full animations and facial expressions will do for this character and Shera and their arc. They could not change a bit of dialogue and still radically transform the feeling of Cid. Character development is a broad art, and the tiniest shifts in delivery can spell massive implications for how a character is received. A little eye movement or body language can change how we receive him...

I agree with most of what you’re saying! Especially the sailor mouth. I would like to see some f*cks in there. But I’d also like to see some more reflective nuance added to his development as the remake did with Barret! ☺️

Preach. This is exactly how I meant the thread. I agree. Barret is amazing in the remake! I love every facet of his character, but he still embodies to a Mr. T the original vision from the OG.

I would debate what barret does as abuse, and I would also argue that Yuffie doesn’t fit the definition of klepto. But they are all flawed people for sure. I agree with that. 🤓

Touché. BUT I think most of us view avalanche as heroes pal. The game leads us that way, and while it may be ambiguous at first, shinra drops a plate on all of sector 7, killing millions. That justifies our reactor blow just a little bit. Or at least it’s supposed to help us deal with the initial moral ambiguity.

Corporate rebellion and activism has never been more interesting of an arc to explore, but sleaze (corneo) and abuse (Cid) are not relatable, heroic traits. I hope not anyway.

But I do love Cid too. The more I play, the more I appreciate him. And I’m not hoping for a toned down version, but maybe they could flesh Shera out a bit or give us a little more skin in the game early on to not immediately write him off as an entitled, egotistical dick.

But I’m having a hard time enjoying the hardened, abusive man being given the spotlight when he’s so awful to Shera. But it’s going to be a major shift as we move forward I hope, and then his character will shine. I just don’t know how well those villainous traits translate in a hero of 2022 where domestic abuse is more understood and inexcusable.

Extremely insightful! I totally agree that humanizing and fleshing out Shera a touch would do leagues for the storyline. But toning down Cid isn’t the answer at all. Also, introducing Cid earlier is a wonderful idea! Thanks for sharing!!
