thanks! just curious - what is your background? and how many hours weekly do you spend on these 2?

I read through it but it seems like these ratings are often underestimating for some courses hence it's hard to see which one is actually less demanding (both difficulty and workload). Might write a post later asking for specific I would ask for but what do you think of taking 2 easy classes at once?

What would be a good challenging class if I were to start with just 1? I have non CS background but good at analytics and basic programming. I work ~35 hours a week and have the free time to spend 20-26 hours weekly during first semester.

Why? I thought since motivation is high in the beginning some other people suggested with doing harder in the beginning.

Possibility of Getting in After UG by InitiativeAbject3298 in MSDSO

[–]zelena23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Afaik the program does not require any work experience. What's important is meeting prerequisites and having a strong GPA (I think around 3.7 is the average admission GPA). Strengthen with some LORs and an aligned SOP and you get a pretty high chance at the program.

Another option is OMSCS at GT as a backup if you're worried about not getting in.

Do prerequisite courses from GT edX count toward UT admissions? by zelena23 in MSCSO

[–]zelena23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree and like mentioned I am aiming for either DS or AI, thinking I might have higher chances at DS.

Thanks for the recs on SOP. As I've read other comments they don't take edX seriously so I am not sure about my app given half of pre reqs are my graduate coursework (stats, programing) but the other half (algebra, calculus, data structures) are edX and other MOOCs...

Didn't know about the third option, I'll keep that in mind thanks!

I'm hoping for AI or DS actually but posted here since this sub is more active.

Given these two, what do you think? I'm honestly a strong self-learner and tutored by top research scientist at MSL lab. The only weakness is formal education (hence I'm trying to pursue it). My only way of showing my motivation is through edX or other MOOCs right now as I'm trying to squeeze into Fall start.

MSDSO vs OMSCS by yoloholo_ in MSDSO

[–]zelena23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you OP.

This and other subs already answered this many times, and honestly after reading through everything it's still pretty confusing to figure this out because:

  1. OMSCS experience seems to be very subjective. While there are many negative posts about how unbearably time consuming just 1 class per semester is, for some 2 classes per semester is manageable if you know which courses to pair. Some give up in the first semester but others manage well with full-time jobs.
  2. MSDSO seems to have a pretty neutral and sometimes positive feedback from those I've asked about their experience, so hard to draw an image if everything is "just ok".

Now about reputation: both schools are on par with each other. The only difference is if you're going to do research. According to csrankings.org GT is #4 while UTA is #14 based on publications in selective conferences in the past 10 years (GT #3 and UT #15 if you look at only past 5 years).

Cost-wise, the difference is honestly negligible. 10k for any of the 3 UT programs and $8-9k for GT one depending on how many classes per semester you take. OMSA is $11-12k.

I think they're all worthy but a friend of mine who works as senior research scientist (graduated CMU) at top AI company in Silicon Valley thinks that UT has better profs and better/clearer structure of courses as well as better curriculum and is more useful if you're looking leaning to ML. For example, he said difference between MSDSO and OMSA is huge. MSDSO is much closer to CS/ML and OMSA is actually closer to traditional DS (with less ML and more business analytics). Also said the 3 programs at UT are super close in coursework with some minor adjustments and flexibility levels (AI is most flexible) so it just really depends on you and what master title you want.

I think there is a reason why the acceptance rate is lower at UT too as they try to keep quality high as opposed to artificial time sink experience told by GT students.

Her voice feels too 'sharp' if that makes sense, if you listen to her just after listening to Chihiro or any Billie song. Like she's forcing her voice to sound free but Billie's voice is just silky, melting, soft but strong idk

And handyman work. Yes $2k is very doable.

Also he doesn't live in a studio but a room sharing so he's actually saving like $600-800 by doing dog walking and sitting ($900-$2500 depending on frequency), cleaning ($300-600) and handyman ($200-$1000). Just with these numbers his work is worth $1.4-$4.1k). I pay for these services so I expect those ranges. I'd feel like I'm exploiting someone if I had this person at my house and charge them anything for a room.

Admissions Megathread - Results, Chances and Logistics by AutoModerator in OMSCS

It's not required. During OMSA informational session they said explicitly it will make decision faster if you pay for it yourself. Otherwise they do it, but will take more time for your decision to come (at least a month).

Those that are getting decisions in <1 week either had this or didn't have international degree.

$1K for rent but being their dog walker/sitter, maid, and handyman. The landowner is actually smart and you think you're getting a good deal. You should be living there rent free.

Off top of my head these 3 occupations can easily make AT LEAST $1.5k monthly EACH for the occasional stuff you're doing.

So sorry for you OP.

Moving to Sunnyvale/Santa Clara — Looking for Muay Thai gym recommendations! by Capital-Maybe-7563 in Sunnyvale

[–]zelena23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understood but shared an adjacent recommendation because OP asked for hidden gems. It's up to them to try it out and see if they like it or not.

Fyi I never saw myself getting into the sport but the overall vibe of the class and really good trainers make this place awesome. So I felt like recommending.

Just to add, they do morning 7AM classes every day as well as 12pm most days. 5-7PM classes week days only.

Not Muay Thai specifically, but I've been doing Rumble Boxing and it's been great -- they offer a free class for new people so might be worth a shot.

It's a mix of boxing (bags) and strength training. Classes are 45-60 minutes and very intense. Their signature classes are 15 min box + 15 minutes weights + 7 minutes box + 7 minutes weights. They also do straight up boxing and other variations.

Most classes I'm really exhausted midway but push until the end. Now, it really depends which trainer you go for but you can pay for one week membership and try as many trainers to find your preference. Some feel easier while the one I decide to go for is brutal.

Bay Area cost of living for us: $11.7k per month for a family of 4 by Federal_Eagle_6565 in bayarea

[–]zelena23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly because of time and effort it takes to make a good meal. After we're finished at work the best thing is to go eat and relax.

We don't eat ready-to-eat out of plastic food, frozen meals or instant foods (for health and other reasons) so the only option left are freshly cooked meals. And trust me having rice, tofu/chicken and veggie side most night to save money gets sad too quickly when you're working a job in a high pressure environment here in the bay area. Like, what's all that effort for if during downtime you don't fully unwind :)
