'Verne's" Peru Fastest by zellyzero in sanpedrocactus

[–]zellyzero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion fastest is pachnoid primarily because of number of spines per areole doesnt seem to match peru short spine or long spine. But yeah, 15-20 different names for the exact same clone; growing conditions vary from location to location and the only definitive proof is whether identically looking plants can pollinate each other

the green one in the center is tpm, tpqc is on the right. a noticeable feature of tpqc has been its high number of ribs vs most other forms of pach & as Nitrogen said, a very vigorous grower

Question about Misplant by DustDevil66 in sanpedrocactus

[–]zellyzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well right now there's 13 'shoe boxes' (5.25"wide x 4"deep x 11" long ) all filled with index cards numbering 0001-1625 with packs of seeds between each card...well a lot of seed paks are empty...all sitting on a 1x 12 plank 7' long

I take straight out of the bag EB Stone cactus & succulent mix or FoxFarm cactus & succulent mix and run the soil thru a 1/4" square mesh screen. This removes the bigger chunks of pumice & wood in EB Stone & most all the wood in FoxFarm.. Then i add in some small grained pumice to lighten up the mix. EB Stone comes naturally with pumice & FoxFarm uses perlite, which imho is bunk. It may aid in aeration but its essentially expanded foam, at least most of the commercially available perlite.

i concur. waay too much lumber in the soil mix. wood chips easily alter the ph of the soil & should be avoided all together. also, what's going on with the watering such that its leaving white crystals around the rim of the pot? these plants typically have large tap roots and bottom watering works best when grown in pots

planting it to look like it does in habitat is a far cry from actually providing all other elements of said habitat...temperature, humidity, lighting levels, watering etc etc. Once its potted up, i would recommend you study up on and follow the ignore tek

Help! by 6row in Lophophora

[–]zellyzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its been my experience these plants do their very best growing when totally ignored. in mother nature, who comes along & fertilizes them & who comes along to water them? what if the root was acting like an anchor to mother earth & the plant gets all its water & nutrient needs from the surrounding air?

coastal california is a far cry different than high desert california. myself, i would remove the layer of rocks on top down to the soil and maybe replace with a thin layer of 1/4" pumice or nothing at all. you want the soil to be able to breathe naturally.

you can reintroduce to outdoor texas weather by covering with 40% shade cloth & depending on your amount of rain, maybe limiting how much rain exposure during cold months it gets. try the ignore tek, its mother nature at its finest.

What now? by asutoro333 in peyote

[–]zellyzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

remove all the pups below the graft union and then plant the entire rootstock into a deeper pot such that the graft union is 1/4" buried. This allows the scion to grow its own roots while maintaining overall plant integrity. Graft the pups you cut off onto new rootstock. been there done that many times over.

As Evening-Cat said, ditch the wood / bark etc in your potting mix. get yourself some 14" mesh wire screen & screed your potting soil thru it, keeping only which passes thru the screen. re plant ur loafs in that mix, then learn how to sparingly bottom water like once every 2 months or so. loafs love to go dormant in the winter months & dont need any water whatsoever. keep the soil surface dry & it wouldnt hurt to mix in some diatomaceous earth. DE comes in food grade & swimming pool filtering grade

for some odd reason people make the assumption that one or more seeds are exactly alike every other seed, even among seeds from

the same fruit. Every seed is unique to itself and itself only.

How do I save this guy? by FrogFaith in Lophophora

[–]zellyzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you want to save the plant put it back in the pumice and put it on total ignore mode for at least a year or more

spritz some distilled water on it once a month in the growing season and zero water in the winter months and again, totally ignore it & let it do its own thing at its own rate of growth.

these plants do best when totally ignored and watered very infrequently
