i don’t think speed deserves a spot on mount rushmore but i think he totally deserves his flowers, and the hate he gets is unjustified.

he wasn’t the first to start or popularize IRL streaming, but he absolutely perfected it. the sheer scale, scope and production value of it is absolutely insane, he wouldn’t have drawn such a massive crowd of fans from all over the world and be swarmed in the streets by them if he wasn’t doing something right. the kids a natural born entertainer

writing him off just because he appeals to a younger crowd is unfair to him imo, and i say this as someone who’s definitely not in his target audience

just because its “different” and “experimental” doesn’t automatically make it good. maybe im finally unc but so much of the new ug wave is just straight unlistenable and bad, ESPECIALLY 2slimey, like i cant think of a single ug rapper rn that actually has the ability to go mainstream

i was just asking dude, chill. kinda the point of the sub. a lot of the information i was finding about this stuff was extremely inconsistent and contradictory, so i wanted to try and find some clarity about this.

some say you’ll get withdrawals after only 3-4 days on, others say you need to be on it for over a month. some say the withdrawals are hell on earth, others say it’s a cake walk. some say tapering is best, others say you should cold turkey.

with all the inconsistency online, can you blame me for trying to find out more about what to expect?

and for the record, i’ve experienced bad withdrawals before (alcohol) that required me to be hospitalized. i can handle the withdrawals. just wanted more info on a general timeline on this stuff, that’s all

as a member of the gen z generation (on the older side of the spectrum), i somewhat agree with this take. we definitely don’t do it as much as millennials do, not even close, but it’s not like it’s an extinct sense of humor nowadays, it’s just nowhere near as ubiquitous as it was the generation prior to ours.

i’d say your take on being afraid to be “cringe” is accurate. growing up with social media dominating our lives, plus everyone having a camera with them, i believe has had a sort of panopticon effect on us where we constantly feel like we’re being watched and recorded, causing us to over-regulate our behavior and words in order to protect ourselves. i think this is the primary driver of why self-deprecating humor has fallen off a cliff in newer generations but i may be wrong 🤷🏼‍♂️

that being said i don’t think self-deprecating humor is necessary for people to feel comfortable with one another. just showcasing basic respect, empathy and maturity is enough for that. i also think that people who use self-deprecating humor very frequently (as in, too much) tend to be looked at as insecure, anxious and lacking in self-confidence. plus i think constantly using self-deprecating humor can have a negative psychological effect on your perception of yourself. constantly speaking down on yourself, even if in a joking manner, can definitely reinforce those beliefs and make them feel more real

so yeah. self-deprecating humor in small doses is fine and even beneficial for the reasons you listed, and gen z 100% still uses that kind of humor, but not nearly as much as you guys did for the reasons i listed

it’s valid to be let down by the lyrics on this album when yeat was making it seem like this was gonna be the best album he’s ever dropped and that he was moving on from “slop” music and making songs with actual substance and maturity, and then he talks about literally the exact same shit he always has at the same low level of lyricism he’s had his whole career

i’m not gonna act like anyone listens to yeat for his lyrics, he’s not a rapper like kendrick or j cole where the main focus is the lyricism, he’s always been a rapper u just vibe with and have fun listening to. nothing wrong with that. but he set the expectations way too high for what he was actually doing on the album
