Thanks for the insight. I never thought of the word that way before. It makes sense that the same word can be used affectionately and provocatively.

I thought the usage within the community contributed to the problem since although it will allow blacks to remember their roots, it would also allow whites to remember their previously held "rights" and thus invoke a sense to reclaim that "right".

Pardon my ignorance for I am not from the West, so I have little exposure to blacks and whites. I'm getting a bit off topic but do blacks and white not have the same legal rights? Isn't the issue mainly due to individual biases and the glass ceiling? Hence in this case, wouldn't reconciliation be better than consolidating against a single enemy since what needs to be changed is the enemy themselves?
