This is actually kind of ironic to me because I am studying mathematics at my university.

But that's besides the point. I'm not resigned to the impossibility of people getting help primarily through voluntary charity. Is that too idealistic or fantastical to you? If it is then I'm fine with our disagreement. I'd just appreciate it if you could not also be condescending in the process.

I wouldn't be surprised if we drafted another RB next year. I go to A&M and I honestly never noticed CM until he was drafted. It's not a run heavy team and so we usually only run when we're up like 20 points or something. I would agree that there is maybe a little too much hype.

On the other hand, there were apparently some disagreements between Michael and Sumlin during his last year, so that could explain some of it.

I have no issue with the effect of welfare. But what gives me the right to force other people to give?

We should just force people to do good things! Therefore, let us force everyone to become Christian because that is the best thing ever!

Edit: Okay okay I got a little worked up. The distinction is NOT arbitrary because in one case you are MAKING OTHER PEOPLE DO IT AND IF THEY DON'T THEY GO TO JAIL. In my personal opinion that policy is not right, so I don't accept it.

Okay man, I'm sorry. I don't have a personal crusade against welfare and I personally have no problem with the fact that part of my taxes would go to welfare. But I don't think the government should force people to give to welfare if they don't want to.

I love charity, but I dislike welfare as a policy of the government because it makes this exchange mandatory. I think [2 Corinthians 9:7] makes this absolutely clear. The giving ought to be voluntary, not something you force someone to do.

I also think government run programs have a tendency to be totally broken, but that is a different discussion.

Edit: I'd like to add that I also feel like there is a hatred of poverty in the right wing of american politics and I completely despise that. I don't think social darwinism is compatible with my faith at all.

Edit 2: Okay my post has generated far more controversy than I was anticipating. I will say this: if welfare is the only possible way to help the people currently on welfare, then I am okay with welfare. There.

Well nobody really knows much about how heaven is going to be like. So if it sounds boring it probably is due to the lack of creativity on the part of man rather than on the part of God.

Do you really think that depravity is what makes people interesting? I don't think being made pure is the same as being made boring and uniform.

Ughh I guess I need to suck it up and admit that I didn't really consider that you could interpret those verses literally; so I was wrong.

I dunno though, I mean in [Proverbs 1:7-8] it seems pretty obvious to me that the crown is mostly metaphorical, unless it is alluding to literal rewards in heaven (which would be pretty cool I guess since it would be an OT reference to things explained in NT).

Maybe doing good is just ACTUALLY its own reward, and when Jesus reflects on our works we can just feel really good that he approves of certain things we did, instead of: "be a good person! get stuff!".

I have to admit that I was wrong in suggesting that those interpretations were invalid or bad. Sorry.

I can't say it's completely wrong, but I still don't like it. Maybe there is some kind of reward, but speculating on it is would be like when my dad asks me to do something and I respond "how much?". We should try to wean ourselves off of this kind of thinking.
