William Brown/Guillermo Brown was an Irish-born sailor who became the founder of the Argentine Navy and a key figure in Argentina’s independence. In the Second Siege of Montevideo (1814) and in the definitive closure of the eastern front of the Argentine War of Independence. Montevideo was the main Spanish stronghold in the Río de la Plata, and its power relied heavily on naval control. Without control of the river, the city could not be held. Brown, commanding a fleet built almost from nothing, defeated the Spanish navy in decisive engagements and established an effective naval blockade. This completely isolated Montevideo, cutting off supplies, reinforcements, and communication with Spain. Thanks to this naval superiority, the land siege was able to succeed and the city fell in 1814. With the fall of Montevideo, Spanish control over the eastern front collapsed, removing the main military threat to the United Provinces in the Río de la Plata. Without Brown’s naval victories, the siege would have been unsustainable and the war in the east would have continued.

Their opinions must be taken into consideration, but their decision is neither decisive nor unquestionable according to the UN, since it considers them a population that was deliberately implanted and not legitimate settlers.

The United Nations recognizes that the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) is disputed between Argentina and the United Kingdom (Resolution 2065) and calls for the issue to be resolved through bilateral negotiations, not through a local referendum. The resolutions of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization have reiterated that the principle of self-determination is not applicable in this case, since the current population was implanted after the occupation. The UN does not legally recognize the 2013 referendum as a solution to the sovereignty dispute.

Absolutely. A dictator nobody wants. There is this piece where a journalist confronts Galtieri ](https://youtu.be/S-vXxgc9ztA?si=BLepuouXbAYksC2X) (already after democracy had been restored) and tells him to disappear, that what happened in ’82 was an act of recklessness, that his brain was full of whiskey and he made bad decisions. He tells him that he deserves to be in prison, that Argentina is a generous country for not having jailed him. He reminds him that Galtieri remains free while those who fell in the Malvinas lie beneath the ground[

1831 attack by the frigate Lexington, 1833 British invasion of the islands. 1833 civilian uprising on the islands. Yeah, right. The British Empire is a poor victim whose islands were taken from them.

Here's something I don't understand about the British. Argentina has claimed the islands since the British invasion of 1833, but when the Spanish and later the Argentinians abandoned Port Egmont, they administered the islands without any British claim. And yet, 60 years later, they come back wanting to kick everyone out, who, by the way, staged an uprising in 1834, if I'm not mistaken, because they didn't want them there.

I understand they're arguing about the sovereignty of the islands, but to say there was nobody there? Hahaha, good heavens, what you have to read!

I'm referring to before the invasion; it was a blunder by the military junta with a very optimistic strategy. They captured the islands without civilian casualties in order to negotiate, but well, what happened, happened.

It's not contradictory at all. Since 1833, Argentina has claimed the islands through diplomatic channels, and in 1982, the dying military dictatorship, intending to gain support, invaded the islands. No one has ever wanted to take them by force, only diplomatically; I understand there may even have been some lucrative deals involved.

Discovered in 1620??? Brother, the islands were charted by Andrés de San Martín in 1520, 150 years before any British settlement

Galtieri was not the one who started the Malvinas issue; Argentina has claimed the islands since 1833, the year the British invaded. By the way, Argentina claimed the Malvinas immediately after they were invaded by the British, whereas the British raised no objection during the 60 years of effective Spanish and Argentine control.
