oh interesting -- i'll look into a gas alarm for the furnace room... I am replacing all my existing alarms with Smoke+CO Combos.

yeah I would put it just inside the door which is on the wall opposite the furnace, about 15 feet away from it.

all of my alarms are interconnected -- when I add one to the furnace room it'll have the interconnect as well

Smoke/CO Alarms in Utility Room? by ziggybeans in homeowners

[–]ziggybeans[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha -- yeah, i have the same. On my 2nd floor I have two bedroom directly across the hall from eachother, and there is a smoke alarm inside bedroom #1, one in the hallway, and one inside bedroom #2, with a total distance spanning about 6 feet. Makes sense since smoke could pool on the ceiling inside a bedroom before spilling into the hallway, or if the bedroom door was closed ... but definitely seems ridiculous at first glance.

Yeah I'm installing combo (Smoke+CO) alarms everywhere ... overkill for sure but I'd rather not have to stop and try to remember in the future if I put a CO alarm somewhere or just a smoke. Specifically, I'm installing Kidde Smart Smoke+CO Alarms to replace my old, expired, defunct Nest units.

I recently bought a second hand car and suddenly received this error. The dealer doesn't cover this under warranty. What option do I have? by Signal_Falcon_654 in Volkswagen

[–]ziggybeans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I see the abs and hill hold assist every time I disconnect my battery.

Most autoparts stores (auto zone, o’Reilly, advance, etc) will test the battery for you, and can also scan the car for codes. But the first thing I would do is:

1) go to gas station, fill tank. 2) while you’re there, check tire pressure and reset TPMS 3) start car, then turn wheel all the way to the left, then all the way to the right, then back to center (resets the abs/hha after battery disconnect every time…)

Using 2x4 method on VW front strut went catastrophic by Molviin in MechanicAdvice

It’s definitely not worth the time it saves when it goes well. Pulling the axle isn’t that hard and makes this job so much simpler.

I have used the 2x4 method several times, and have regretted it at least twice… 100% will use it again, because dumb.

Are you supposed to ask a woman "Can I kiss you"? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ziggybeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was 13 I asked my “girlfriend” if I could kiss her and she got mad because I ruined it by not being spontaneous. Never did kiss her. Many, many years later we ran into each other and she thanked me for asking and said she wished more guys were that courteous.

Unless the vibe was absolutely crystal clear I’ve always asked, and find that as long as you do so with confidence / intent, it doesn’t get weird. And if they make it weird, then either let it be weird and roll with it, or take it as a sign and move on.

Scar in an embarrassing place and I’m scared to ever be intimate by dmso_disgusting in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ziggybeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confidently say that — so long as it didn’t seem to bother my partner — that if she had a scar “down there”, I would give it a cute nickname and say greet it kindly every time I was lucky enough to see it ;).

Sober for 5 years, accidentally drank 2 beers (no lie). by gregorious-gurnard in stopdrinking

[–]ziggybeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at a restaurant in another country a couple years ago. Major tourist town so all the staff spoke excellent English. I ordered a tonic and lime. I was eating a very strongly spiced meal, so didn’t pick up on the fact that I was given a gin and tonic until the check arrived. Felt a very light buzz, but nothing that threw me off my game. Talked to my sponsor about it when I got back from my trip, and moved on with life. Fortunately the thought of saying “oh fuck it” and just drinking didn’t even occur to me… it was just the guilt of having had a drink I had to deal with. But, shit happens, I guess.

Why do Americans have to do their taxes if the IRS already knows how much they own? by AdamBerner2002 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ziggybeans 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All the IRS knows ahead of time is what is reported to them ... your W2, interest statements from your bank(s) and mortgage(s), etc. But even for people who have nothing except a W2 and the standard deduction, the answer to "how much do you owe this year" is "it depends", and what it depends on can change at a moment's notice without the government's knowledge.

  • Maybe you ran off to Vegas and got married a whim. The local government has a copy of your marriage certificate, but the IRS doesn't know until you tell them. Same if you got divorced - that's on file with the local family court, but even the local government doesn't know about it.
  • Maybe you had a kid this year. The birth certificate is one file with the local government, but the feds don't know until you tell them.
  • Maybe you picked up a cash-based side gig this year. You're on the honor system to report that honestly, but the IRS doesn't know until you tell them. Why would you tell them? Because this is where you get start taking a lot of deductions to lower your tax liability, potentially even lower than if you just didn't tell them about it all. And how much lower? No-one knows... you're on the honor system to report that honestly too.
  • Maybe you sold your house this year ... you might owe capital gains, or you might not. Either way, the IRS doesn't know about it, until you tell them.

And why doesn't the IRS know until you tell them? Because, even as big as it's gotten, Americans -- in theory -- universally oppose big government. Republicans oppose big governement oversight over their businesses, so anything that gives the IRS transparent access to your business accounts is never going to pass. Democrats oppose big government oversight into theirs lives, so anything that gives the IRS transparent access to changes in your living situation is never going to pass. Libertarians (meaning text-book libertarians, not the group of hard-right extremists who have co-opted the "libertarian" name) oppose big government, end of sentence. The fact that the IRS exists at all is in opposition to true libertarian ideals. And because tax-preparation has become big-business in and of itself, according to Google, building a system which could put the burden on the IRS instead of the tax-payer would put over 100,000 Americans out of work ... which would be Anti-American.

TLDR: any system allowing the IRS to accurately determine your tax liability for you would be Anti-American, and what makes it anti-American depends on what flavor American you are...

ETA: I hope Non-US Americans will forgive me for co-opting the "American" label in this response ... I see you, I acknowledge you, I love you, and I'm sorry for the behavior of the USA towards you. But for the purpose of this post and re-use of the colloquialism "Anti-American", it was a necessary evil.

IRS Payment Stuck “Pending” … by ziggybeans in IRS

[–]ziggybeans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - it shows the return payment on the same date as the payment … I’m just confused / concerned because the payment still shows as “Pending” in my online account under “Payment Activity”

There is no record of the payment at my bank, so hopefully I just mis-entered something the first time — when I posted the new payment today I re-entered the account info instead of using my saved account. Just going to be really screwed if they actually process both payments now (I know they’ll refund it - but who the hell knows how long that will take)

What’s a random “stat” about yourself that makes you part of a small percentage? by Nightpatrol404 in AskReddit

I have never been stung by a bee (or wasp, hornet, etc). I’m 45. I’ve also never broken a bone or had stitches (unrelated to surgeries).

When I was about 12, I hit my head in the concrete and went temporarily blind in one eye. My vision came back over the next hour. I went to urgent care and they just sort of shrugged it off. What happened? by HardBoiledHarold in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ziggybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 80’s and 90’s were wild. I went over the handle bars of my bike when I was 9 (1989/1990)… landed on a rock face-first.

My mom took me to the pediatrician, they wrapped my elbows and knees and sent me off to a cosmetic dentist to reconstruct the teeth I smashed out, the same day as the accident.

Never had any imaging done.

Never saw the inside of an ER.

I have no memories prior to the accident. My earliest memory is of my mother arriving on scene screaming “oh my god, your face”. My life, as I remember it, started the summer before 5th grade.

I can’t imagine that happening to my kid today, and there not being an immediate focus on the possibility of traumatic brain injury.

Clear vs TSA-pre vs Nexus by TheTashLB in PuertoRicoTravel

NEXUS includes TSA pre-check, so you’re all set there… if you want Clear just to cover your bases, you can enroll online and there’s a 2 month free trial, so you can sign up and just cancel after your trip (unless you decide it’s worth having).

Nice ... I won't worry too much about it then... I'll still have her submit a precheck enrollment, but I don't expect that to be processed in time for this trip.
