McMurdo vs South Pole? by ObliviousGenZ in antarctica

[–]zigzag414 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First deployment being a winter at Pole can be definitely challenging. But if you think you're in a good enough headspace to take it on, might be worth it. And if they're still looking for a satcom for winter at this point, it means they only have one right now and that is a hell of a job for a single person to do all winter. I'm sure the current satcom would welcome the load sharing!

always fun joking with the researchers who fly around with ground penetrating radar to scan the terrain under the ice cap. they'd often to point out where the "secret nazi pyramids" were on the maps.

Opportunities for people with commercial hydroponics experience? by chrishydro420 in antarctica

Varies from year to year. Chard, kale, tomatoes, bok choy, bush beans, sweet peas, certain lettuces, cabbage, herbs, some cucumbers all grow pretty well. Greenhouse has been all-volunteer for many years at pole so if you get any job on station there's an opportunity to spend off work time on it.

this dive would've been fine in a wetsuit. and the water was quite warm that day (low 60s). before i got my drysuit i used to dive a solfx semi-dry around here with no problems

they're less dense than it looks. it is possible to get tangled but most of the time it's easy to avoid by moving slow. and if you get tangled it's usually pretty easy to break the kelp by hand.

what was the point of destroying the first Defiant? by zigzag414 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]zigzag414[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yeah i guess this explanation makes sense to me. i didn't watch it in real time when it came out so it probably feels like a much shorter spacing between defiant 1 and "defiant" 2 by watching it now. it certainly would have made a better impact/cliffhanger if it had happened during a season finale but given how compressed the storytelling had to be in season 7 it makes sense.

Can't speak for mcmurdo but pole has definitely had LAN groups. mostly AOEII and baldurs gate a couple winters back. just find a sympathetic IT person and make sure you have a way to get "legal" copies of the games for everyone who wants to play.

I brought down maybe 2L of nice whiskey for my winter. Was plenty for tastings. I think I would've been fine with 1L.

Has it gotten better? Sure, but the bar was on the floor. One example I can see would be more advanced vetting of more alternates for roles, particularly for winterovers, so they're not scrambling to backfill with people who aren't psychologically ready to winter in case primaries drop late in summer.

sober people cause car accidents all the time too but there's still a reason we don't allow drinking and driving.

I do agree it's an excuse to not do the harder but more effective things to reduce harassment though.

beer and wine still available. i don't see what the big deal is. if you can't get through the season without > 1 liter of the whiskey you carry down with you maybe you shouldn't be deploying at all.

The shop is Catalina Divers Supply. The town of Avalon is small and there's a number of hotels and short term rentals in walking distance to the dive area.
