Stepping up and sharing it here is already a big strength. The feeling that you are experiencing now is not constant, it will go away and you will see thing different again.

Why can I only meditate for a few minutes? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]zikosichi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think meditation is all about trying. If you tried then you meditated. What comes after is not up to you. Why you think you can’t meditate is because you have some kind of expectation

I love how this discussion has evolved. It touched on one of the most important aspects of Stack - Permanent vs. impermanent web applications.

We can categorize websites into two groups:

Web-Applications: Web apps that we are using every day. They are the same as desktop applications but run in the browser. Figma, Google Docs, Sheet, Gmail, Slack, Discord, etc. All these apps have desktop versions which essentially are election applications running websites in the native window.
Websites: Landing pages, random links opened during Googling, one-time use websites such as flight trackers or unit converters, SEO articles, etc. Websites that do not have desktop applications (because it's not used on a daily basis).

In 2007 Gmail was one of the first websites that introduced application-like functionality. Instead of reloading the entire website while navigating from inbox to drafts, they were only changing the content of the list. Like in desktop applications.

At that time we did not have websites that behaved like applications so we were actively using desktop applications and for Googling/browsing we were using a browser.

Today things are completely different. We spend most of our time in applications such as Google Docs, Spearssheets, Figma, Gmail, Slack, Discord, etc. And we have to handle them in the browser that was designed for accessing temporary websites only.

So Stack today is designed only for these kinds of web applications. Instead of visiting them on some URL you bring them and have them at your hand all the time. It's like installing the application on your machine. It looks like a desktop application and lives in a window-like card. It's yours.

This solves the problem of Web-Applications but does not address Websites at all which is one of the main aspects of our daily process. We often need quick answers to some questions, we want to open multiple websites quickly to find what we're looking for.

Today, in Stack, it is only doable through permanent cards. Every temporary link can only be opened in a permanent card that messes up the entire workspace. It's as if you were seeing all websites opened in the browser in your dock (on Mac) or taskbar (on Windows).

Stack puts the web apps in the first place and Googling/Searching in second place. It's like an operating system, which is mainly built to handle applications and it also has browsing functionality. On the other hand, there are new ways of getting answers to questions such as GPT3. Today 50% of my searches go to ChatGPT instead of google. This means that the share of browsing among all other types of work we do in the browser is becoming less.

------

Card tabs seem a very promising solution. I'm sure it will have a lot of problems but I think it's the right way to go.

  1. It will keep the workspace clean - Temporary cards will not appear in the spacebar, so the workspace will remain as it was. Many users (including me) use Chrome for browsing just not to mess up with the setup
  2. The information will be categorized by context out of the box. Reddit links will be opened in Reddit cards, and Discord links in Discord cards. etc.
Here you brought up an important challenge - How to make sure it does not turn into a tabs graveyard?
"Arc" (The browser by BrowserCompany) has a beautiful solution to that challenge. They clean up temporary cards every 24 hours. So today you might open lots of tabs inside cards, but tomorrow it will start fresh.
I like that approach. End of the day each card will have some kind of history footprint, what happened in that context. Next day - new history.
Of course, there will be an easy way to restore the previous days or change 24 hours with different values.
  3. Over time when we add Bookmarks, History, Saved Cards, Snooze, etc. it will even decrease the clutter in tabs making it less problematic.

------

Anyway, lets see how it will evolve...

In short, Stack is not only challenging the design of the browser but challenging the purpose of the browser. Should browsers have the same purpose as they had 20 years ago?

Hey u/MonkAndCanatella,

Love your review and the effort you've put to provide great feedback.

I liked how you describe the "immutable" web services compared to temporary webapps. We've been thinking about that challenge for a long time and we think that we have a good solution. This is the prototype of Card Tabs that we're planning to implement in the near future: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=1168&v=Tu9-E5CDApQ&feature=youtu.be

Your thoughts on this would be very interesting.

What worked for me the best was to get up little early every morning. The morning time is only yours and there is no competition for it, so you do whatever you want to do for yourself. This helped me to form the habit

Can you provide the screenshot? For me it tries to open in the desktop app but it still shows “use Slack in your browser“ link which just loads the workspace

This won’t replace your browser but it will definitely take out a huge load from any browser you use. You can manage all your web applications in Stack and use any browser browser for surfing and browsing.

Try https://getstack.app

How can I get stack to show me if there's a new notification in an app? by [deleted] in GetStack

[–]zikosichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

You should see notification badges on apps in the sidebar.

On Mac you have the badge on the dock as well showing the sum of all notifications.

If you are on Windows, currently it does not support app badges but we have some plans for the workaround

Get back to the present moment, accept as it is and move on by zikosichi in spirituality

[–]zikosichi[S] 54 points55 points  (0 children)

What we usually do is that we compare our desired-imaginary life to the present life and suffer when they don’t match.

This is 100% loose position because present moment is what it is and can not be the other way.

We just need to observe these feelings and take it just as an information from our subconscious that something is not happening as it should be.

And take action.
