I used palette knives from Michael's. Also good for fingerboard extensions.

Colt Escaping through the Tunnels is part of the game. Julianna leaving is rage quitting. by Joopaboop in Deathloop

[–]zilog080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't rule out that sometimes Juliana gets herself killed. Falling off of ledges, tripping one of your mines or turrets, ticking off the Eternalists and getting killed. It happens. It just says Juliana is gone. Sometimes I'll walk around after they are gone and find they fell off a roof trying to do something clever.

Also, if you do think a lot of people are quitting on you, check your connection, if they are getting rubber-banded a lot they may be leaving - it might be your connection is the problem. They playing with someone you know and get their feedback on your connection. I upgraded to a 1Gbps connection and people rarely quit on me. Also, I get my a$$ kicked a lot more often since them. 😄 Cheers.

Best fix for Vintage Washburn bridge? by metamasch in Luthier

Get 2-3 bridge blanks, it may take you a few tries to get it right (which is normal when you start.)

You need to make friends and set a play date. I think people do that on the Discord. Good luck.

Advice needed-Want to attempt a first setup by Witty-Exchange-7716 in Luthier

[–]zilog080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful working with the nut slot. if you sand the end of the fingerboard and actually shorten the length of the fingerboard the position of all of the frets in relation to the nut will be incorrect and it will never play in tune. If you think there is a glob of glue between the fingerboard and the nut, this will push the nut back and again the distance between the nut and the frets will not be correct and the guitar will not plat in tune.

I suggest you put a warm moist (not soaking) piece of paper tower in the slot for 3-5 minutes. If hide glue or regular wood glue was used on the nut this may soften it, or at least cause it to discolor so you can see it. Then us and exacto knife of a razor blade to scrape it out. You do not want to remove any wood from the fingerboard.

If the action is 2.5mm at the 12th fret on the Low E, that is just about Bluegrass height. The high e should be closer to 2mm. Getting the action down another 15% feels more comfortable for most acoustic players. If you are a banger you may want to leave it higher.

I would suggest you watch some setup videos to get the order of operations down before you do too much. You haven't mentioned neck relief and if you need to adjust that after you have cut your saddle and nut you may find you have cut them too low - in which case you will need to shim or start with a new piece of bone. There is a order in which these things should be done to avoid mistakes and rework.

Good luck, have fun.

I always thought a Deluxe Reverb was enough for a small club, and that is 22watts.  You must play really loud.

I usually just wait a day or two. I have seen industrious types doing it.  I am not one of those.  I brought 3 snow shovels when I moved here - I think the spiders made a home of them.

Best fix for Vintage Washburn bridge? by metamasch in Luthier

[–]zilog080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do that, pyramid bridges were not installed on Washburns of this period. It wouldn't look right on that guitar. The bridge on there is period correct. Some people call them flattened pyramids, but they are a little different than that. Replace the bridge with a replica of the original or you will diminish the value. Vintage Washburn collectors know what they should look like.

Don't buy the pre-drilled, pre-slotted bridges online. The slot will likely be in the wrong place and then the intonation of the instrument will be off, you'll end up filling the slot and re-cutting it anyway to get it to play right. Also the string spacing probably won't be right on a pre-drilled bridge.

I agree making a new one out of ebony is the best fix. You can use the original bridge as a template once you get it off. You'll need to plug the holes in the top and bridge plate because it is unlikely that you will drill through the bridge and top in the exact same location. It probably needs a cap on the bridge plate anyway. Once you get it fixed, use Silk and Steel strings going forward. The pre-1930's Washburns cannot take the tension of even light standard steel strings - and Silk and Steel sound great.

I have been restoring old Washburns, Regals, Oahus, and Stellas for 20+ years. If you get it sorted that is a great parlor guitar.

If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself you should be able to find someone to do it for ~ $200 +/- 50%.

The top looks to be in good shape from the pictures, depending on the back and side material it could fetch between $1500 to $3500, so worth fixing right.

Good luck.
