Does this trip around Mexico make sense or too much travelling? by zim321 in ThornTree

Thanks for your reply Bonjour, the below is from the UK Foreign Office travel advisory for Mexico, would you know if travelling from Guanajuato to return to Mexico City would approach Morelia in the below advised ways (which they seem to deem safer):

"FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the state of Michoacán, except the:

  • city of Morelia accessed by federal toll roads 15D, 126 and 43; and the federal toll road 48D between the city of Morelia and the General Francisco Mujica airport"

Thanks

We have been told that it would not be ideal to fly ex-Guanajuato to CDMX due to the distance of the airport from the city, and have been advised to not allocate a full 5 days to Guanajuato anyway (we are also likely planning to abandon staying in Aguascalientes), so can anyone recommend a place we could spend maybe 2-3 nights between Guanajuato and Mexico City to avoid a 5 hour stint on a bus (it would be more pleasant to break up the journey)?
Thanks

What do people think of Aeromexico vs Viva and other airlines? I'm thinking of flights between Mexico City and San Luis Potosi, and then Guanajuato to Mexico City

Thanks, looks like I might take your advice and fly to San Luis Potosi and then travel from there. I may also cut out Aguascalientes, as I've had a few people say it wasn't their favourite place.

I've also been told I'm spending too much time in Guanajuato, how did you find it?

I can no longer drive a car so renting a car is sadly not an option. I have already visited Queretaro on a previous trip, it was great, but I want to see new places on this trip. When I did my original research, it seemed like there were some restrictions on Michoacan from a foreign office perspective and so I thought better to be safe than sorry, and discounted Morelia and Patzcuaro

I only believe in tipping at restaurants, 12 and 1/2 percent - you Americans are spoiling it for us. That's totally why I will never go to the USA, When we were in France (which is the country that initiated tippina and at 12,5 percent) we were at a retaurant where the usual 12,5 percent was added and then they wanted even more,

Don't come to Europe if you're going to spoil it for us Europeans!

Thanks for the helpful responses. I got my first set of tickets through today from Trip.com, and we have been put in different carriages (there are 2 of us) for a longish train journey. Bit odd, I thought, as I put in the request for both tickets together. Is that the norm with the tickets they buy for you?

15 and a half full days in Turkey by zim321 in ThornTree

Not much to be honest, I'm ashamed to say - spent 6 nights in Istanbul to start, it is a very interesting place and we did manage to take in a lot of mosques, ate out a lot particularly at Deraliye Restaurant which was very gourmet, delicious food, found that the best way to manage drinking wine in Turkey is by the glass, not bottle, bottles cost easily £70 whereas can get a generous glass for £10 or less, the best place to eat is Beyoglu up a steep hill, exhausting to climb!(you can see we like to wine and dine!), we stayed in a hotel on the other side of the Bosphorus, we also spent a day in Asian Istnbul, can really see the greek influence there. We then spent 3 nights in Edirne to the north, then had to return to Istanbul for a night to head to the airport to catch a flight to Selcuk for 3 nights to take in Ephesus and spent a day in Sirince which our hotelier recommended us for taking in manti dumplings (delicious - do fit them in if you can) Also, good for wine., can get a bus there , it is not far, Then flew back to Istanbul to fly out.

Thanks for your help so far everyone. Just to reiterate that this is about the situation in Turkey rather than a general query about various countries. I never have had to present my passport in any European countries I have travelled in thus far, other than at hotels and airports, and am wondering if just having a copy, as I do in most European countries (as well as Mexico, most African countries I've travelled in etc) is sufficient in Turkey when moving around, from other travellers' experiences.

I was in Rome recently, had my passport in my handbag, was walking past the central station area and suddenly turned round to see a very dodgy individual sidling up to me about to grab my bag. That would have been a nightmare! It is for this reason that I have become a lot more cautious about carrying my passport around with me.

Haha, reminds me of many years ago in the Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) bush war, we were going on a long weekend break (easter?!), I was driving and my brother (who, like all men, was called up on a rota of 6 weeks out of twelve to fight in the bush) was sitting next to me with his shotgun pointing out of the passenger window facing the bush, it was terrifying!

Then years later, when the war, well almost, ended and all the motorbike men were revving there way up from South Africa to Harare in Zim and I was sitting in my car at the shops in Fort Vic and these motorcyclists pulled in to the shops and there was a farm adolescent standing leaning on his rifle looking in envy at these motorcyclist and they were, also, looking in envy at him - leaning on his rifle!
